anyone ever had to use their liability insurance?

Fortunately, I have never had an incident or claim. But it is certainly reassuring to know that i have coverage. I have had to issue several Certificates of Insurance to banquet halls, so, in that light, I have used the coverage.

Never had to use our liability, but did take advantage of the truck policy that paid out $900 to replace a loading dock handrail we...well.... err...backed into with the truck. DOH.

We were glad we had a liability policy when a kid seized very badly at one of our events; they didn't come after us, but you never know if they will or not.

Having filed several reports, I honestly believe possible deep pocket shotgunned law suits were avoided.

Having coverage is one thing, knowing how to use it effectively is another. I bet about 1 out of a thousand would have a clue what to do if something were to happen at their event. I pity the poor son of a gun who has none if anything goes amiss.

There have been several posts in the past dealing with reporting issues and procedures, most of them ending in a flurry of ignorant and/or stupid opinion.

What's the best thing to do? Call your carrier and ask them what they expect of you in cases of injury.

Ask them if you're 100% covered at an event where you don't have a contract.

Ask them if they even care, and if no, find another carrier.

I have had a insurance certificate asked for in a couple of venues but no I have never had to file a claim, (it is pretty much just piece of mind).

There have been several injuries at events I have done broken arms, legs smashed faces, busted teeth etc. but they are not the responsibility of the DJ. Now if your speaker stack falls over and hurts someone that will be on you, if you have speaker, power and mic cable spread around on the floor and not in a protected area (read blocked off) and someone trips and falls in the general vicinity then that too is going to fall on you and your insurance.

If anything should happen anywhere close to the DJ area then get the names, phone numbers, and addresses of any and all witnesses and have them write down what they observed. Get a statement from the injured party if possible and be sure and write down exactly what you observed as well in cluding date, time, level of sobriety of the injured party etc.

To add to what Cap has said already if you don't have a contract then you can pretty much be assured that you don't have insurance coverage either, so be damn careful with setup and layout.

sorry dont have that sort of thing happening in Oz so couldnt tell you
