I'm done with DJing.
I can pretend I just haven't been focused on promoting that service, but if I'm completely honest it's because I've simply lost interest and I don't find the DJ entertainment role to have moved in a direction I want to go. I simply don't like doing it anymore.

Apparently, the general audiences seem to be moving away from it as well. While weddings and Bar Mitzvahs are still in full swing I'm seeing a lot less interest and response to DJs. At many events the crowd simply aren't into the DJ entertainment and once the program portion is over things wrap up pretty quickly. It's not simply the music either. I sense the level to which streaming content and 24Hr technology has transformed and fractured our society makes DJ entertainment kind of innocuous in any setting that doesn't explicit;y emphasize traditions of dance, the way for example, weddings do.

Friday I had a room that literally emptied 25 minutes after the DJ started. This was an ABC Sports level college awards show with food and after party in a room just across the hall from the main theater. 150 or more formally dressed college athletes and students came in post presentation, grabbed some food and then nearly ALL took the first bus out there leaving the room EMPTY.

Nothing wrong with the DJ or musician, and I kept the system live for them while they continued enjoying the extensive lighting and sound system. I had another 5 hours of strike ahead of me so I was in no rush to cut the sound and light while they hosed around. Yet, there was literally jus me, an LD and a handful of catering staff in the room. The entire audience had left the builing an hour and a half early for what was billed as a 2 hour post awards reception.
I sensed that was the way things were going. Things changed during the pandemic. I think that was the trigger.🫤🤷‍♂️

You think there was nothing wrong with the DJ. That's your opinion. The way I see it the crowd didn't feel that way.
The crowd left on the first BUS in perfect unison - like there was a fire alarm.
Clearly this post award party was totally ill conceived with food no better than your ordinary stadium fare, and no family.

These were elite collegiate athletes - not middle school kids at a dance. Totally ILL CONCEIVED reception for what was a crowd of student athletes only. I can't imagine a worse setting for female college athletes to be in - and the mass exodus should be a wake up call to whoever planned this.

Mix your not out in the real world weddings are still a real market for DJ’s, try h Ed d as ya of every corner bar having a Dj are at a definite decline, there was a time when this was a semi lucrative market you could DJ somewhere nearly every night of the week if you wanted, I was at a concert last night in Wisconsin Dells, we stopped at probably a dozen bars afterward, 3 had DJ’s and not much of a crowd, good DJ’s just no one there, the rest had live music ranging from solo artists to a 5 piece funk band, all of those venues were full of completely packed, with active dance floors and venues making money as fast as they could serve drinks.
What does that have to do with what I posted. My thinking was did that DJ consult with the person that asked them to do the event to see what was needed to make the event a success.

Bob said it wasn't the DJ’s fault for the crowd leaving the event. How does he know this. That DJ might have thought he was playing the right music for the event and he might have been wrong. One of the first big things I learned to thoroughly find out the details for an event to see if it's a good fit for you to do the event. Once you agree to do the event it's up to you to do your best so people will enjoy what you did and possibly want you to do another event I'm the future.

It's also about knowing how to read the crowd. That's something that you get to learn over time from doing events. Sometimes you may have to quickly change things up to keep the crowds attention so they don't leave the venue in bunches.

You are so out of touch, the dj was playing the right music for the crowd and doing it very well, people are just more attracted to live music, it has really been on the upswing since covid, you need to get out out of your self induced tiny little world and see what’s happening everywhere else

No I'm not out of touch. Were you at that event? How do you know the DJ was playing the right music for the event? Is it because Bob said the DJ did a good job? My personal experience is if drools of people leave the event usually its because they didn't like the DJ and what they were doing. That's what it was about Friday at the event I went to.

Here's the real truth. It's about knowing what to do at a particular event. What I do for the seniors won't work in Branch Brook Park. That event is different from what I do when I play for the seniors. Some DJs are gig whores. They will agree to do an event even if it's not the right fit for an event just to say they made some money.

What does what you posted earlier have to do with what Bob posted about an event a DJ was doing and the majority of the people left the event?

Of course there are bars that don't want a DJ in their establishment. Then there are other who are looking for a DJ to work in their bar. Also it's about what day you are in the bar. Certain days the bar knows that having a Dj playing there not a lot of people will come to the bar to help the bar make money.

Now my buddy does Karaoke in 2 different places. One on Wednesday and the other is on Thursday. Some bars don't need a DJ because they don't know how to keep trash from causing the bar more problems than not having a Dj in the bar.

Mixxy, you know more about bars than most bar owners. LOL
No. I know what I've seen in the past and how some owners make classic mistakes. For example the bar where I first met my partner was a big mess. It was on Sherman Ave in Newark, NJ. That whole strip was where cheap drug addict prostitutes walked the strip.

The bar didn't have a sign with its name on it. It was called C & B. The owner didn't care about that bar because he had another bar on Broad Street that he cared about.

The bar that my partner was playing in they had no security and when he played there the owner didn't care who came in the bar. So there were plenty of under age people who came in there and was drinking alcohol. There were so many that the people behind the bar weren't checking IDs. If they had the money for the drink they got it.

We tried to talk to the owner about getting security when the DJ played there. He didn't want to do that being cheap.

I was at my jobs union Christmas party and when it was over I went to check on my partner to see what's going on. When I got there the police were inside. They let me in because I'm his partner.

My partner told me what happened after the manager lied and said it was the DJs fault. The police knew what the problem was.

My partner told me that there was a patron in the bar that had been drinking and they were using one of the young girls to get him to come outside so they could rob him. So a bunch of patrons on the bar went outside to stop them and they came back in the bar and started fighting. He said he was hiding out where he stored his gear. He said one person got thrown on the other side of the bar and the bartender got his nose broken with a chair. That was his last time he played there. That's just one example.

Trust me I have more examples. What I say is first I understand that in order to keep a bar open the bar must make a certain amount of money. The thing I say and will never change my mind. It's about a bar owner going after smart money and not just any money. Let those who create a big problem in a bar go some else and cause problems in that place.

I've known places that got shut down because the police get tired of having to keep coming to a bar that keeps having trouble. So what happens is eventually they will hit the owner with a big fine that they know the owner can't afford and thus the place is closed in most cases for good.

Weird in over 30 years I have never played in bar that needed security, I must frequent higher quality establishments

I hear you and I knew you would chime in.

Now let me say this. When I first came into the PPL they didn't have security. Eventually the owner who was a lady after her husband died didn't have security on Friday and Saturday. Eventually they noticed certain element wanting to come into the lounge. Especially when the other bar on the other side of the street closed down. The police had to sit in the parking lot when it was almost closing time.

They never worried about the PPL. Eventually they got a man I call road block because of how big he was. He stood by the door and he decided who to let in and who not to let in.

Let me ask you this Tunes4046. Did any of those bars you're talking about allow a DJ to play today's hip hop gangster rap all night or was it a nice mixture? I know you don’t believe there's anything called gangster rap. There certainly is. They just don't play that kind of music where you're at.

You are correct in this way. There establishments that are smart and don't allow certain element to come into their place. Again it's all about how a place is run. Also some places are in high drug crime area and have to what they need to do to keep the doors open.

I think so. Must be a bad area.
Maybe a little bit of a made up story.
I would like to see this partner post with his own account.

I could play whatever music I wanted, I always played to the crowd that was there, usually a pretty solid mix of top 40 radio, hip hop throwbacks, country, whatever the vibe happened to be that night

Let me say to vision that story is 100% true. Now I understand Tunes4046 the bars you have played in where in the suburbs where some people sold drugs but didn't hang on the corner. You didn't have to worry about gangs in the neighborhood.

In certain areas a DJ playing hip hop songs the whole time they played in a place would invite a certain crowd and my personal experience is normally it turned into a big mess.

That where personally I'm very careful where I do an event and for whom. When it comes to a private event I like to be in a nice venue with mature people who will know how to act.

Now for me I haven't played in a bar for a few years because of what happened the last place I played in. Things weren't good even though it wasn't my fault that things turned out the way they did.

The owners on Friday nights at 10PM were charging $10 to get in and that's how the DJs that played there got paid I believe. I switched from Friday nights to Sunday evenings because I knew what eventually was going to happen on Friday nights. ABC ran in the place and the bar got fined for allowing a bunch of under age patrons come in the bar and drink alcohol.

What happened is I came there on Sunday like I normally did and found out it was closed for good. I beyond angry because I didn't get a call to tell me what was going on. I called my buddy that was playing there and he told me what the deal was.. since then I haven't been actively looking for a bar/club to play in. I wanted to play in this real nice club down the street from where the PPL was but the Pandemic hit and the owners never bothered to open back up.

You DIDN"T SEE IT so your assessment is worthless and self serving vanity.
I've been at this a super long time! I know what I know. That's not something new to me. I knew eventually something like that was going to happen. Besides my partner had no reason to lie to me.
