Any of you have Day Jobs?

I could "survive" on my radio gig and I could "survive" on my DJ gig also and where I'm in Canada Healthcare isn't an issue but surviving isn't in the plan I like toys and so do the wife and kids. I also like the freedom of knowing if the day gig pisses me off I can walk away and still eat not that I expect that is going to happen I like my job

Jobs do not really "give benefits", it is part of your compensation agreement but you just don't see that money. A self employed person can "give" themselves the same benefits if they pull aside the amount of money needed per month. One example being. If you take home $4,800.00 per month and you want a two week paid vacation then you need to set aside $50.00 weekly or 50 weeks to have that 2 week Vacation money available. Do the same for all the other deductibles, Health Insurance etc and they funds will be there, You will actually get a bigger write off from a Self Employed Business making $100,000.00 than a Employer Job making the same amount.

Agreed on the tax write off. Other than that it's a matter of perception. Large companies that 'give' benefits buy in numbers and typically pay a lot less than you or I would to get the same benefits. I doubt your day job would add the same amount of $$$$ to your salary as you would pay for those benefits

Totally agree with Danno and to an extent, Canute - while most employees 'pay' for their benefits, some do not. That said, because the bigger businesses generally pay alot less for benefits than an individual could, they're not the same .. and should not be viewed as such. It would cost an individual much more for health insurance (and other benefits) than if that same individual is part of a business' benefit plan. Some benefits simply cannot be met individually, such as contribution matching 401k and others.

The Insurance will be the only thing that may have a difference in price as per premiums but everything else can be more beneficial per self employed. You also get other benefits from self employment that you don't get from a Employer job..
Ability to choose your hours
Ability to choose when you go on vacation (With the family)
Take a day off at will
Write offs like auto maintenance and its Insurance And there are many more. So if everything is itemized, the chips can fall in favor to the self employed.

Canute, believe it or not, some jobs actually allow you to:

Choose your hours
Choose when you go on vacation
Take a day off at will

Just because you're offended, doesn't mean you're right.

Algren (sorry we have no real name to go by) .. You're not a professional DJ by admission, not a videographer/photographer (at least you have made no overtures to such) and seem to have a weak grasp of lighting (you questioned the wisdom and need of amber in LED lighting) .. just wondering if you are planning to contribute to the conversations or will simply make derogatory retorts? We treasure contribution, but really don't need any additional trolls.

People do not come out of their mother's womb with complete knowledge of lighting or DJ'ing. We are all at different stages. While I learn, yes, I will make mistakes, I will make comments that seem inexperienced....THAT'S HOW PEOPLE LEARN. If you don't like my comments, you can be unique and ignore them or be helpful. Or you can be a jerk and be like the rest of the Internet.

If you are truly here to learn .. then great .. ask away. Most here are happy to answer intelligent, honest questions.

I agree - ask away .. there is no better way to learn .. but by the same token, don't be defiant if you're the one learning. Try not to come across like you know better .. if you really don't. That sets people off.

If you don't want this place to be like 'the rest of the Internet', then you may have to change your approach as well. I don't know you - so from a general perspective, if you don't get along with people in lots of places, the people may not be the problem. No one wants to help, teach or share with someone that 'knows better' .. but really doesn't.

You can have an opinion .. we all do. But when you get called on it and you're wrong, be prepared to 'deal with it' as well. If you can dish it out, so can these guys.

Not sure how much you're going to learn with a 'deal with it' attitude.

Just because you're offended, doesn't mean you're right.

It has nothing to do with being "right".
And I never said you were "wrong".

Just don't know why you feel the need to "cop a tude"...
when, by your own admission, you are new to the biz, AND new to this site.

And no, we DON'T have to deal with it.

But I do know better on some topics. I'm a DJ and lighting novice, not a life-novice. My opinion will be heard. Deal with it, guys.

The perhaps you should save the attitude for the discussions where you DO..."know better".
Or, at least let us know what those topics are, so we can seek your advice.
