Adding subs to my setup

I currently use Yamaha S115V speakers and no subs. But I use Aphex204 Aural Exciter and Optical Big Bottom which somehow simulates the low frequecies even on my 15" tops.

I plan on adding subs by end of year so I've started planning my purchase. What do you guys think of the following:

2 x Yamaha SW118V subs
dbx DriveRack+ loudspeaker management system
Crown XLS802D power amplifier.

I'll like to start with a two-way system and in future change it to a three-way system hence the need for the dbx DriveRack+.

If you have suggestions let me hear them or if you've used any of the components in the list, let's have your opinion about them. However, I'll like to use passive subs. Thank you.

Before I answer, what kind of vehicle would you be using? :triwink:Anything less than a van would not get a reply! :tricool:
 
My setup is very similar. I have the Crown XLS602 and wish I had the XLS802 to push the Yamaha subs. I really like my setup and it's hard to go back to doing a gig with only the Yamaha 15" tops after adding the 18's!!! Feel free to message me for more information if needed.
 
I think any of the Yamaha speakers are complete crap.

There really isn't much in the same price range.

I would go with JBL JRX 18" subs they are the same price and 4 ohms you will get more bang for your buck out of your amplifer with a 4 ohm sub.
 
I had the s115/sw118 combo and they sounded disappointing when I first hooked them using 100Hz as a generic crossover point. From what I remember I did some testing and ended up using something like 80Hz as the crossover point due to the subs getting non-musical quickly above that. That change cleaned up the sound quite a bit. I am guessing that the driverack has presets for these speakers, so you should be all set. If not, you probably also want to set a high-pass filter of something like 40Hz also. I used the inherent 30Hz filter in the QSC amps that I was using.

Initially I drove the subs with a bridged rmx850 feeding them less than 400 watts each. I then upgraded to a plx3002 giving them 550+ watts each and they sounded much better. Your xls802 sounds about right.

These subs are not extremely powerful, being similar to others in the price range, PV118, JRX118, etc. Keep the subs next to each other either centered or possibly wall loaded and they will give you much more low end than the s115's alone. Don't expect them to shake a large room, but they will put some beat on the dance floor.

I would like to if I can. I am very open minded, but I can only recommend something of which I have personal knowledge.

How about this? http://www.bgw.com/subwoofers/m2200t.asp about one of the few Powered Subs that I like. It sums the stereo Bass to mono and has selectable frequencies. Heavy? Yep! It ain't plastic, thats for sure! My first amp was and still is BGW 200w per Ch into 8 ohms, it is in use as to this day. They are built tough and to last!
 
i use the 18" subs along with the 15's and they move mountains being pushed by xti 4000 amp. boom boom.
 
Plenty of boom if you ask me. I like the Emenince drivers in them and the cabinet construction is proper as one would expect from Yamaha.

Crossover set @ 78-80, YMMV
 
A friend of mine had the yamaha subs, and though they sounded pretty good, he seemed to blow them up a lot. If your careful with them and don't expect them to do more than they are intended for, I"m sure you'll be fine.
