Ok, this is another review I finally got to.

I ordered a B&N Nook to take with me on my trip. About the same weight as a paperback, but smaller in bulk, and I was limited to what could fit in my backpack.

So, I ordered it Friday before Labor Day, with express shipping. It was in stock at their warehouse, less than an hour from me in Joisey. Check the shipping thing (ARGIX), and it shipped Friday evening. I figure it should be here Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest (I was leaving the following Monday).

By Wed., no dice, so I called B&N, and got some guy who said it should be there later in the day. Mail had already come and gone, but I humored him. Thursday rolls around, and no sign again. Check the shipping, and it's in FL????? It went from Joisey to FL, and still wasn't in the USPS system yet (the final delivery people)... :sqconfused:

Called back, and actually got someone who cared. He had no clue what happened, but sent me a replacement via UPS, which arrived the next morning :)

Got my 3 books loaded up, installed an 8 GB SD card (not all that easy), and loaded my tunes on it (1,032 of my favs).

So,

3G was flaky here -- doesn't seem to like brick and trees. So I switched to Wifi to get the 2 big books. No problem, and I had to do a find to get to the pages in the real books I was reading. No biggy, pretty quick.

Pros:

It plays music far better than my iPod Touch. The songs seamlessly go together. The interface sucks, but the music plays great :)

Cons:

The rest of it :sqerr:

The color touch screen is flaky at best, and is not nearly as well developed as an iPod Touch. Lots of back and forth to actually get it to do what I wanted. It has a hard time differentiating between a swipe and a click.

Reading was fine, until you have to turn the page -- very slow update, and lots of flickering.

Startup time is horrible! My lappy starts up quicker.

It constantly buzzes any speakers nearby, even with Wifi off. The 3G is always trying to communicate, and seldom does. But it will effect other devices around it.

When I got back, the missing one was on my doorstep -- now I have two of them (one free apparently -- sorta like Tribbles) :sqerr:

Anyway, I think I'll get a Kindle, and see if that's any better, but it's a neat MP3 player :)

You missed my birthday again....Aug 25....perhaps you could send me my belated birthday present?! lol

I thought it was my Birthday/Christmas present... both in December....

Guys -- you gotta help me here. The chicks are ganging up on me :sqerr:

They're using my male emotions against me. It's like how we bribe each other, except they don't use money or beer... :yosword:

We sprang for the Kindle 3G / wifi with leather case & nitelight and could not be happier.. 100 books loaded on the unit all free from the classics to fiction. (mostly for wifey).

I would recommend downloading a program called Calibre that allows you to convert the various non Kindle formats so they can be read by the Kindle.

It's a great tool to update the meta data just like Mediamonkey does for Mp3 music files etc. There are a number of sites that have free titles such as the Gutenberg / by Google project etc..

Got the same one. love it. Got the calibre software as well. I love it too.

the 3g works fine.

battery lasts up to a month.

I probably wouldn't recommend the kindle if you are getting especially for the internet. But a fantastic e-reader that has the ability to play audio, and free internet to check email, get my google reader stuff is hard to beat for $190
