I have a teen semi formal this evening for 400 kids. I have EV Live X 12's and I rented Yorkville LS700P subs. I have 4 tops but would really only like to bring 2 as I'm really tight on space in my trailer. Anyone with some real experience please comment. Do I really need 4 tops for tops. (I don't know the size of the room but I recently did a wedding in an 8000 sq ft room wtih only 2 tops now subs.

Thanks in andvance

That amount of people calls for 4 x tops and 4 x 18" subs (or 2x Dual 18" subs). Can you do less? Probably, yes they will hear the music but it will be blaring. Also be careful because if you try to push the speakers, remember they are rented, so if you blow them, they are now yours......

Agreed, load the four top cabs for this show. With a teen audience of that size you're gonna need 'em. If there isn't room for the extra cabinets in your trailer, can they fit in the back seat of the towing vehicle?

If there's one thing about teen shows this old DJ learned the hard way, it's this: you can never have too many speaker cabinets. :)

the 700s are going to be a bit lacking. I too would rather have even just one LS800 powered for that amount.

Be sure to stack (couple) the two Yorkville LS700s to gain the extra dbs. I used to have a single LS 700PB (double 10") and found them lacking for the low end I wanted. Upgraded to single LS801PB 18" (1500 w). For parity, however, I would like to get the secnd LS801PB and then pole mount a NX750PB Yorkville (750w) on each sub.

I'm guessing that you'll do OK with the four tops and the two subs. Let us know how it turned out.

Well the two LS700P with 4 EV Live X 12's just barely cut it. There was 505 kids and a really big room. I was amazed how much sound was soaked up when the kids came in the room as my sound check was sounding pretty sweet. Anyway, got through the night, had an absolutely jam packed dance floor all night and the photobooth was a huge it. That was my largest party by far as I'm used to doing the wedding thing with groups generally between 100 to 200 people. Good lesson for future if I ever get the call to do those type of events.
Thanks for all input guys.

Glad you made it through the night. Just remember that anytime you are looking at above 200 people in a large space, you start thinking FOH style systems. You don't have to go out and buy that kind of equipment if you don't plan on using it a lot, just charge enoough so you can rent while still making a decent profit for yourself.

I own elx112p's for my small events but for my teen events I use two yorkville E152 tops running off a qsc plx3102. The ELX's can't do at full throttle what the yorkvilles can do with just the signal lights blinking on the amps. 2 differents animals for 2 different jobs. I also run yorkville LS808 subs (non power version of the ls801p mentioned by others) off another plx3102 bridged for teen events. Check my gig report under nyssma conference to see this system in use.

Also make sure you are putting your top speakers OVER your crowd for big events. Makes a world of difference! I put my yorkvilles up so the bottom edge of the speaker is at my forehead.
