I have a preference for ev subs myself...evx when possible, evm will do. Currently have 26 ev 18's and working on 2 more as I type this.

I don't want to be rude just ask question. Do you really need more 18"s? You system is very old school and yes appearance is big (I'm sure that is a selling point). Wouldn't it be more beneficial to upgrade to a more powerful system with a smaller foot print? You can move to a nice line array and get the sound over the crowds heads and most likely carry 1/2 of the number of speaker boxes you currently carry with the same SPL and most likely better sound quality.
Different tool and different applications. We use a short throw pa because we're covering a gymnasium, not a stadium. We use a lot of cabs for coverage (and the size is impressive as well. So no, cam, I don't see that as a good business plan. Old school, maybe, but current speakers....very solid, and heavily used speakers in the pro audio industry actually. You can buy them new to this day. The X's are a beefier model so the ultimate goal is to upgrade more m's to X's. We probably wont carry more than 24 (our current size).
And a line array in a gym wouldnt sound ANYTHING like Vals rig.....the small boc line arrays sound very whimpy to me.
Thanks for the explanation. Maybe we can get Ben to chime in and give a comparative explanation with some more technical info. I did en event this year that a pro-sound company was brought in and they used a very nice EAW line array for a ballroom. It was a fantastic setup, the sound was amazing. There was a ton of bass and there was only 4 18"s used per side and 4 cabinets per side were flown I'm not sure of the make and model. I would just tend to think the newer the gear the more efficient, and ir would make fore carrying less gear.
Smaller footprint, high performance gear is an option (for some) however, the level required to outperform our current system would not be economically feasible. We are in the business of turning a profit after al (hopefully). Good question though cam. Our business plan just avoids rigging for a lot of reasons, and spending another $150,000 or so on stereo isn't going to turn a profit anytime soon, Or at least we don't want to work that hard at it...we are not in a good market to maximize use (low number of festivals, corporate and other live sound is sparse for 200 miles here making it difficult to keep the rig busy enough).

I have a set of JBL SRX 718s and I find they do not hit as hard. I'm powering them with 1 x QSC3602 bridged for both speakers. Mind you, they are going thru a BSS-334T and the sound guy may have turned back a bit on the limiters. (i'm not a sound guy at all). I may just by-pass the BSS and see if I get more out of the speakers/amp.
I have the older SR-X series. SR4718X and SR4719X. They work, so I'm not fixing what isn't broke!

The 3602 runs outta gas on subs...they will hit harder, WAY harder with a big boy sub amp on them.
Think I-Tech 8,000 Lab Gruppen, QSC Power Light 6.0 or newer PL series.
Yes .. but as mentioned before, you need power to drive them and getting 30A (multiple) circuits is just too difficult to do unless you can hot-wire the panels yourself. If you're going to run them on a 15A circuit, night as well get the cheaper PLX2s.
And as was said before, an I-Tech will run just fine on wall power, and even better on big power.
And at a club it would be easy to have the power needed for a big amp installed...Tying in isn't that big of a deal if you know how to do it.

For the mobile jock, the number of places you can get enough wall power to justify the big guns is minimal. Clubs, yes, you might find 60A twistlocks you can distro from. Gyms, maybe .. the ones I have done don't have panels close enough. Reception rooms .. almost never. I would love an iTech or LG, but if you're going to run them at wall sipping levels, you might as well run a PLX2 .. same output.
I bought 2 Yamaha DRX subs and i love them. I'll really see what they can do on April 28, 2012. I'm helping a brand new DJ with his first gig ever. He only has a laptop, Headphones, mic and Mixtrack Pro. So i'm letting him use my speaker setup and mixer to do the birthday party with. Before anybody beats me up i'm doing this like i told him so i can finally get some pictures of the new setup and me behind the facade to put on to the website. I'm being nice this time. He's doing all the playing. I'm just supplying the sound and cordless mic since he doesn't have one.
I did let him know that if he wants to use my system again it will cost $300.00 to rent it out. Of course i'll be there but i just want to see how he will do at this party since he's looking for a DJ to teach him about DJing. He was in the basement and did a nice job. The only issue was with his music. Some of the music wasn't clean editted music. I did tell him how such music may not be accepted by some people. It's his gig and i'll let him learn from this experience.
To end it all here i really also want to see what the system will sound and look like finally instead of sitting in the basement.

Another reason to spend a couple of bucks more and get quality equipment in the first place .. rental during down time can provide a nice income stream.

Not trying to hijack the thread but does anyone know how the EV elx112p tops and the QSC hpr151 subs will work together? On paper, it looks great but wondering if anyone's ears have tickled this setup.
