1 watt or 3 watt LED

That is the question....

Currently looking at either the 1 watt Elation Opti 30 LED or the Elation Opti Tri 30, which is a 3 watt, I believe.

What, besides "2 watts" would be the difference in an uplight/throw distance?

Would a 1 watt provide a SOLID beam column for say a 10-11' rise along a wall? My current 1/4 watt LED uplights are just BLAH after going up 4-5'....

I saw the new ADJ 1 watt LED fixture at the last NJDJN meeting & was like WOW!

Any vendors carry these????

BEN? You out there? ;)

Maybe looking at 6-8 lights to start.....

Seriously, I think a 1 watt minimum is what I am interested in - unless there's a 3 watter that could be had for not much more... Thanks.

Cheers,

Joe

I hate Elation and Chauvet LEDs. I would look at Weidamark or ColorKey. That being said my rule of thumb is...

10mm LED - 8-11 feet (252 LEDs per fixture) usually around $189 each
1W LED - 14-18 feet (36 LEDs per fixture) usually around $235 each
3W LED - 18+ feet (24 LEDs per fixture) usually around $499 each

Mike -

Without starting a pissing match, what is it you hate about Elation LED? They use Luxeon (name brand) LEDs, can you tell me who makes Wiedemark and ColorKey fixtures and what LEDs they use. I think you might be surprised.

Also consider the major shows and venues using Elation, and I don't think Wiedemark or ColorKey can boast the same resume. I carry ColorKey, and I'm not knocking them... but hate is a strong word... so I wanted to air this out a bit.

Joe - Yes, I'm out here. For lighting most venues where a DJ will provide uplighting a 1W LED should be more than adequate. More is always merrier, but the tradeout in price might not be worth it.

Mike,

Thanks for chiming in -
Your info in feet, is that throw distance?

I had mentioned the Elations b/c I saw someone picking up these on another board....he was opting for the 3watt Elations. What is it that you don't like about them or Chauvet?

I know Tyrone has mentioned/opted for Weidamark.

Any model in particular for the 1 watt LEDs that you would recommend.

As I'm looking at more & more theatrical lighting applications, I see that there is so much more out there to choose from. (Now added a ETC Source 4 for my gobos).... LOVE it!

Thank you,

Joe

Ben,

Thanks for chiming in - All options being considered right now!

Like I said, I was at the NJDJN meeting last week & saw the ADJ Pro Par 56RGB 1watt LED & was very impressed.

Anything comparable to that unit that you'd recommend?

Cheers,

Joe

PS: Glad you made it home safely!

Good call on the ETC! Elation has a couple of great models to choose from, Chauvet's new ColordashBlock wowed many people at the three ADJA meetings I was just at., and they have a new 1W LED can coming out in November. For that matter, expect to see a lot of new things after LDI in 3 weeks.

Ben

I don't like the Elation/Chauvet dimming, it steps too much for me (esp on the low end), and they tend to have problems with DMX (receiving DMX from some consoles, and sending junk DMX down the line), their color mixing leaves a lot to be desired (their palette is very narrow), and they have a lot of edging issues. I have never had anything but problems (until the last show I used them on, and I only used 4 colors and never dimmed the units).

Others have had good experiences and like them, but I won't use Elation or Chauvet LED equipment unless I have to (although I do sell the Rain units to very low end clients who won't spring for the Weidamark or ColorKey units, they do function and are what they are).

Mike

PS The ETC units are killer!!! If you have the scratch get them without a doubt.

Great....:)

Found a local AV house - they were willing to part with a S4 (19*) & then a 26* barrel, extra lamp, gobo holders (A & B) & even threw in a couple of breakup patterns to show prospective clients (if they want it)... and if I want, I can now rent a 2nd unit, etc, for break-ups, etc.

But back to the LEDs - So LDI is in 3 weeks - but what to do for my Nov 14th wedding that want elegant (pipe & drape for their elevated head table) - roughly 30-35' riser length & 2' high. Looks like they want an up-lit accent wall just behind them.

Thanks,

Joe

Mike,

That may be possible - I will see what the AV house could quote me - looking at 5-6 for the head table area...

Here's a pic, btw of the ETC S4...

Nice to have those DJ Skirt pieces (2) of them to hide the wires & dress the pipe.

Cheers,

Joe

Oh well - I just checked an old e-mail quote...

The AV house rents Coemar PAR LEDs @ 65/each....So 6 will go for $400 w/tax...

Hmmm.

Ahhhhhh... The Coemars are a little more than you would need. I know I have a small production company here that rents the Elation ones (grrrrrrrr) for $20 each per week. Are there maybe some smaller production companies in your area?

Nice job on the Source4. I spec them on all my installs, you just can't beat the light from them and I love how versatile the whole Source4 line is.

Mike - Thanks for your replies.

Yeah, for the S4, I was told that since I have the 26* lens (as bought with the original unit - which has a 19*), I could get a 2nd unit for somewhere between 150-200.....:) The company I have a nice contact with, has been great to work with & I've only been dealing with them since July.

As for the LEDs, I'm waiting for the one sales guy to come in for another company - they had ADJ Pro 64s in-stock, but we'll see if they've upgraded their inventory.

Cheers,

Joe
