This is what I'm dealing with

You have a kid 2 years or less out of high school, not the best of clients for a rental facility. I don't think places around here would rent to anyone under 21, due to liability issues, and the owner/manager should have had their own personnel there to make sure a 20 year old follows through.

This thing isn't just happening where you live. The issue I have are those who are assuming the DJ sold too many tickets to this party. It just may be that he was selling tickets and people could pay at the door. A friend of mine had a problem with a party he was doing. The place could hold over 600 people. He was selling tickets and people could come to the door to pay for more money. HYe said 1,300 people showed up meaning some people who paid with a ticket couldn't get in. The fire marshall had to come and shut the party down.

The big difference between his party and this one is that his party was for mature adults 30 and over. This one was for a bunch of teens which is not always a good ideal. So it may not have been all his fault. He just may not have expected that many people would show up. Same as my friend.

With all due respect Wes, this is NOT what you are competing with. Memphis is a cesspool, probably even worse than Birmingham (and Bham needs to be bulldozed and start again). This "DJ" is likely wearing his arrest as a badge of honor and his clients will continue to be the worthless scum of society. They have nothing to do with you or the clientele which I'm fairly certain you serve. As for this venue owner, she should have known not to let that kid rent her facility so in my view she's certainly no victim and got what she deserves.

Different animal! How quick we are to call other people names. Why? Because of skin color? The people who attended are other people's Sons, Daughters, Friends and Family. Why do they have to be labeled as scum? 20 years is an adult, there was no wrong doing for a venue to rent to a 20 year old. That 20 year old had the guts to step out on his own and produce his own show. His only mistake was breaking the Occupancy Limit. That is not uncommon as one may think. It happens at Hotels, Restaurants etc all the time. Those who produce their own shows can and do make more money per Event than someone who just waits to be hired. They also stand to make more money overall without having to be out each and every weekend.
Even at Weddings things can get out of hand! Fights, shootings, DJs getting beat up etc. are some of the bad things that happen at these Events. No difference, just different venue! We tend to demonize that which we do not comprehend, be it out of fear, jealousy or just plain ignorance. As I have always stated, there is much more to DJ life than just Weddings!!

I give the kid credit for trying to do this .. though I think greed took over (as well as inexperience) in the actual handling of things. There is also some head scratching as to why a venue owner/manager wouldn't have maintained their own run-time management and security given the age of the audience and the lack of track record of the client.

No one here mentioned skin color - so don't start a skin color / race war. I'm not defending the use of the word scum, or any other word, but as a fyi, the Memphis area is a very bad area and has been for awhile. I believe TN is the crime capital of the US at the moment. This includes people of all types and backgrounds.

Another FYI, there are also people of multiple skin colors that think Memphis is a scary place.

Memphis #5 / Nashville # 18 = Tennessee #1.

I don't know that I would call people scum and I also give the kid props for trying to step out on his own. I think the venue owner also needed to add some oversight - facilities here have tried similar things with young folks with a similar turnout and similar result. The venues now make it real hard for young people to rent these facilities.

While I agree that '20' is a legal adult, there are still a boatload of things you cannot and should not do at 20.

And we can see why .... experience has yet to be gained.

I think it would hurt if you were a Rave DJ .. not sure any sane person would connect you to a high school event gone amuck.

Most people hear the term 'DJ' and they of Radio and/or Party DJs. Dare I say; most don't know that there are many kinds and levels of DJs. We generally all get lumped together.

I think this will blow away quickly .. seeing as there doesn't appear to be any long term issues. Same thing as a crappy restaurant not giving all restaurants a bad name or image.

Nobody mentioned skin color.........except you. And why did I term these people as "scum"? Because they are. In either Memphis or Birmingham, the cities have become over-run with low-life, no morals, pieces of human debris who would just as soon shoot you as to look at you. If a venue owner is stupid enough to rent out their facility for an event that will be frequented by those types, they fully deserve to have their place trashed.

Almost any promoter will be willing to oversell an event by 5-10%. When you oversell by 125% you are a complete idiot

You did not have to mention them......your past references to instances like this and similar ones also to the "kind" of people who Mix has at his Gigs speaks volumes of your thinking. Every time you bring up the subject of Scum and low life and there is a link, video or Pic involved it is all the same types of people to whom you refer. Lighten up, you are not the only human being that occupies the earth!

You are making assumptions and accusations (of me). The "kind" I imagine you are referring to are "black people", no? That's not what I was referring to. There are plenty of black folks who are great individuals. I worked for a black couple last weekend, with almost all black guests. They were fantastic people and the guests had a great time. I'd invite that "kind" any time.

The "kind" to which I'm referring are a low-life culture, who are very predominant in Memphis and Birmingham, and it's not about skin color. Yes, I imagine the vast majority of those happen to be black, but trying to equate the two only exposes YOUR problems with being a racist. I suggest you get off the Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton plantation and stop playing the victim. You're not very good at it.
