I'm almost ready to leave the house to go to the DJ Expo. This will be my first time ever going. I'm excited. I don't know what to expect. I do know I need a mini vacation. I will be leaving AC on Friday. Hope to see some of you there. I plan on taking plenty of pictures. Wish me a safe trip there and back. Today if you come down I will be wearing my DJ Macho Man t-shirt.

Let me finish the little stuff I have to do to get ready to leave and have a great day.

I'll be looking for you. Trying to make it to the registration desk for 10:00 - 10:30. Today (Tuesday) is generally the busiest day at these AC conferences; Wednesday not too far off.

We'll (meaning who ever shows up is welcome) be meeting for drinks and dinner at 7:00 pm at Angelo's Restaurant (google it. It's not too far from the Convention Center or Caesar's). We ate there last night too and it was outstanding Italian.

My son & I will be there today. I always try to make the expo and been going every year since the first one. Although for scheduling reasons at times I don't stay for the full four days. I still remember to this day going to the first one and thinking who the hell's going to be there then turning the corner and seeing a very long line. The best part of the Expo is the networking. I plan to be at the restaurant tonight because as Cap Said it is really close to the convention center. You will get a chance to meet my son who's taking over the company and trying to put me into retirement. lol

Mix. I thought you said you paid for the whole week? Bagging the whole first day isn't a great start.

Steve this is my first time here at the DJ Expo. So I don't know what to expect. All I know is a company I think called DAS makes some great speakers. Those are the best speakers I've heard at the Expo aside from the RCFrench they are using that you can use for a festival.

I heard a pair of Pioneer speakers and they sound like SHIT to me.

Just got back home from the exhibits... probably the least impressed this year with the exhibit options than any other year in the past 5 yrs. The venue itself was much darker and gloomier than the trump taj it used to be in. Not really great when you're trying to showcase products. Seems to me the biggest advancements were in the moving head category. A lot of great options in the sub $1200 category. After hearing the other "new" speakers and dropping by the rcf booth, it made me very happy I went with RCF L24's and 8004's this past winter... hands down the best sounding speakers. But there was really nothing there that was mindblowing, or where you say this is the new direction djing is going in. I left without the slightest temptation of wanting to buy anything.

For those curious though... my main interests are in brighter gobo projector with zoom capability like the ikon profile I have. New facade options... (seriously contemplating something like the hoerboard stereo t design)... I seriously thought I'd see something in this area as the trends are definitely pushing in that direction, but perhaps its just a local trend. Also, new smaller lighter speakers to replace my k12's for monitor's and cocktail hour speaker options. So far the only thing that appealed to me was the k8.

Thank you for confirming what I figured would be the outcome of the show this year. I wasn't impressed last year at all.

Did it seem like less people were there as well? From some of the pics I have seen on facebook it looks like a smaller crowd to boot.

The space its in now is massive and very spread out... and being that its not in a casino, there isn't random people in the background of photos. You could say it felt smaller in terms of crowd size... but the actual number of attendees could perhaps be on par or more... its very hard to tell in the new space.

I'll echo Taso's observation (and I met him earlier in the afternoon).

Not much stood out. Little in the way of new controllers (except for things like the huge Rane platters) and not much new in speakers. Chauvet and ADJ both had smaller booths this year and JBL, Yamaha, Carvin and a couple more didn't show up.

The expo center wass too dark and WAAYYY to noisy. They let some of the vendors crank their gear and all you hear was rumble everywhere. Really tough to listen to anything on the floor.

The new EV Evolve 50 looked OK, sounded pretty good from what one could hear, and the bass unit was pretty strong. Pricing was 1599 marked down to 2 for $2550 at the show ... just a tad under what the EVOX sells for (and I forgot to get the EVOX pricing for someone here, so I'll do that tomorrow).

ADJ had an EVOX look alike and it was plain ugly up close. It wasn't plugged in, so can't tell you how it sounded. Looked like this (photos are off as there wasn't much light in there)

RCF had some nice stuf ... some new version of their 700 series and their D-Line (HD10, HD12, HD32). Didn't hear them, as the only 2 models playing were the EVOX and the massive system Taso bought. Speaking of EVOX, they had a special "white" version there being sold by Chuck Levin's .. apparently they special ordered a lot. Looked like (on the right next to a normal one) .. pole was still black though:

The only things that sparked some excitement for me, were 3 small speakers. Pioneer brought out their new speaker line last year and added a 10" version this fall (along with a 15" sub) .. should be available in October .. sounded REALLY nice.

A new company was there .. AVANTE .. a new higher end line from ADJ (though they say they are run independently. They had a line of tops (15,12,10) and subs that sounded pretty good .. and the 10s were only $329 (the 12s were likr $50 more).

I sat through the QSC demos, but their main focus was on the new Cardiod sub. And unfortunately, they were playing it loud and exaggerated so you could hear the cancellation when you walked around back. I hope to listen to the K.2 line tomorrow.

The one speaker that actually floored me, was a small top from BassBoss called the DV8 .. dual 8" bass drivers and a horn .. my Godddddd ... these things were as loud and powerful (by themselves, no sub) as some 12" tops over 18" subs ... absolutely incredible. The mids could have been cleaner (though it could have been the material), but the highs were crystal clear and those 2 8" drivers were unreal. Unfortunately, the pricing was unreal, as they were almost $2500 a piece .. I'm still drooling here 6 hours later ...

I did get to have a wonderful dinner with @Cap Capello , Kevin @adj2ent and son, and a couple of others (John .. and I forget the other name). Mix didn't pop by, so no picture of his T-shirt .. maybe tomorrow.

Going back tomorrow for an hour or so, but not sure I'll walk out with anything .. the only other thing I was looking at was a Chauvet Freedom Stick Pack .. I can get them at close to the show price, so there isn't much pressure .. unless they have a quick discount tomorrow.

Are you SURE those dual 8s in that BassBoss Speaker could output as much as a 18 inch Sub and 12 inch Speaker? 8s are known for simply not being able to move enough air to sound louder than they are...typically. Then again, at that price point I suspect the magnets on those 8 inch woofers are MASSIVE, and perhaps made out of some sort of near indestructible material so the excursion on the woofers when being pumped is "insane".

...I have just never heard 8s that impressed me in terms of BASS

Lol it was a pleasure meeting you Steve! Sorry couldn't chat longer... fiancé was hungry .

Perhaps the one observation that could be made is that a lot of speakers are going in the column direction. From small and compact for intimate events, to large scale events... there's a design and combination for everything!
