My partner is looking into getting some smaller subs.

NO SIR. That active sub looks nice. It's a dual 12" sub. My partner was talking about getting 2 15" subs. Besides that what's the weight of that active sub? My thought is getting 2 name brand 15" subs with wheels to move easily. That's the big reason for considering selling the Yorkville subs. My partner is over 50 and I'm over 60. The weight of those subs is just too much. You need 2 people to lift it into the van

Now if a client had the right money to pay us then we would consider using the Yorkville subs. The other thing is that active sub doesn't have wheels on it. I guess if you want to you could put wheels on it but for $2,000 it should already have wheels on it.
You don’t need subs for this gigs you do sell the yorkvilles and pay off what you owe on the new tops you’re paying 20% interest on

What are you talking about? You know what they say when you assume. Stop assuming every event we do we don't need subs. We have been in rooms that you can't get away with just a pair of tops. I personally did an event in Jersey City, NJ and I had to use one of the Yorkville subs. Also I have done a couple of events in a gym upstairs where you can't do the event without subs. Know what you're talking about next time before you make a post.

If I make that a rule your post count would drop dramatically....

Mix when was the last time you used the subs? How many times have you used them in the last 5 years?

You don’t have enough people at your gigs for subs, plus if you were smart you would just rent them the 1 time every two years you needed them instead of spending money on a depreciating asset

You missed an important thing. Part of the reason for using subs is because of the size of the room. Sometimes you may not know how many people are expected to attended an event. You can ask how many people are to attend an event and the client may not be certain how many people will be attending the event.

You missed an important thing, it would make better financial sense for you to rent subs for the few times you need them than to own them

Mix, people can only know what you post. You post pics of gigs. But they are only very, very, small gigs that you are basically volunteering for.

I rarely post pics of events I do. But I also don't post the smallest gigs I do then talk about equipment needed for huge gigs.

If you are going to post pics of events, I'd suggest you post a variety of events you actually do. This would stop everyone from assuming you only do very small gigs because that's all we see.

Mix, why don't you simply get a pair of active 15" 2-way full range speakers and dispense with the subs? You should be able to get all the bass you need out of a 15" driver without it being a separate sub.

There are a lot of very lightweight 2-way active systems based around a 15" LF driver.

Thanks all. I'm sticking with the suggestion my partner came up with. I like having subs for when they are needed you already have them.

Mix man .. Start getting your priorities in order. Not your partner's, not his girlfriend's, yours.

You can't get simple gigs that don't fall apart some way and you want to add to it? Get the basics working first.
From 2013.

I had a talk with my partner about selling the subs. He said it was up to me. He expressed how much he hate the subs but love them at the same time.

He hates them because of the weight and yet he loves them because of how great sounding they are. The bass in those subs are the best we've ever had. They are the best subs we've ever owned. So now it's a toss up. I feel the same way he does. I don't really want to get rid of them but the weight is a big issue. Even using just one can do the job well enough. 2 depending on the event can really be great. So decision time.

Mix, I'll share my story... I started out Dj'ing a little over two years ago now. I bought two 12" powered tops and two powered 18" subs. They were big, they were heavy, and they sounded AWESOME. I Loved them. I used them at about 15% of my jobs, maybe less as time went on. When I did, I rarely pushed them very hard.

About a year or so into my DJ journey, I wanted a second set of tops for larger outdoor area events I was doing, so I picked up an entry level set of powered 15"s. I use them almost exclusively now for all of my jobs. Backyard party with 20 people, I use the 15's. Playing at a bar, I use the 15's. Playing a wedding with 200 people, I use the 15's. Playing outside at a fair or at a parade event, I may use all four tops. I sold the subs. Do I miss them? Yes, "I" miss them. Does my audience miss them? No. They don't miss what they don't have. Sure, there may be an occasional sound junkie out there that dreams of feeling that thump in their soul, but they'll still have a good time at cousin Tyler's wedding reception without it. :)

I'm 47 and not getting any younger. Big subs are heavy. If they aren't making you money, why hold on to them. Mine were sitting there, depreciating in value. I'm even considering selling all four tops I have now just to invest in a better set of 15's.

You say that some rooms just needs subs. I'd argue that one. Go to any mall in America and they're pumping music throughout the place without a sub. Do you want a sub? Maybe. Do you need a sub? absolutely not.

Of course, I'm just a newbie who doesn't know very much, and you're a seasoned veteran and this game, so your mileage may vary... just sharing my story. ;-)

I totally agree with Mix that some rooms need subs. Just none of the rooms he's being booked in. If he were, they'd need a team to move them which they can't afford.

We've been trying for years to get Mix to realize this is a hobby for him and he should make it easy on himself so he can enjoy it. But he gets gear that's too big and a unreliable, years old van with multiple VINs and big payments to carry all of it.

I'm all for everyone doing what is working for them. But based on his posts, very little seems to be working for hint.

There are no "rooms" that need subs. NONE.
There are only applications for subs and with today's technology there are also alternatives.

DJ Forbes is correct - it's clients/patrons who want to FEEL a thump that request/expect subs. If your clients are all club-goers who want to mimic that experience than go for it, but learn how to tune them properly for the space. Otherwise , do yourself a favor and improve your overall performance quality by eliminating them. I hear more DJs with absolutely terrible sound quality because of their subs than one would think possible. What they think is their ideal sound is not actually impressing anyone. There is no amount of THUMP that can fill insecurity . . . . though, many keep trying.

My Brother let me tell you my story. I had a pair of CV MV15s for a lot of very very fine full range speaker. I felt at the time I could use more thump and found a great deal on a pair of Earthquakes165 Lbs worth of speaker. I think I used them 3 maybe 4 times they have been in my basement ever since. I LOVED the sound I hated the weight

I then bought a JBL system with 80 Lb subs. I used them pretty regularly. Loved the sound hated the weight again. To add to that I had an Amp rack that was probably 75Lbs

Then I bought an NX55 system. Subs were around 45Lbs seemed light enough...I then hit my 50's and realized I didn't want to carry that weight 3 or 4 times each way either

This time I bought the Polar 12s. Each speaker system is 45Lbs complete and have all the thump I'll ever need. I use 2 most places but I could easily get away with one in all but maybe 2 venues here

The moral of the story is you don't need all that heavy stuff sell it all buy the Polars..Or the EV or Bose or Yorkville systems you'll have far more than you ever need for the places you play. Your back will thank you

No! No! No!
Weight is everything. No one can be a real DJ without massive subs.
That's why I'm ready to cut a deal right now on 4 EAW SB250 dual subs - so, you too can be a real DJ like you always dreamed of.

Personally endorsed by Professor Harold Hill himself, don't wait - buy now!
