How do we change the luddite mentality?

Wasn't the Titanic cutting edge technology?

How about the Hindenberg?

I use a rack mounted PC. My midi interface is the DAC II; however, I prefer the VDJ UI instead.

As to who the DJ is, there is no doubt that the person standing behind the console is the DJ.

Have I had any crashes. Yep. Before I installed a new motherboard and processor, if I was not careful about what I was doing I'd stress the processor and crash the system. When I first started using a computer I used a laptop and would have crashes. Fortunately all were solved with a reboot of the software.

Since I have installed the new processor and motherboard, no crashes. Actually, it has been over a year since my last crash.

The system only goes on the net when it is time to rip a new CD because I use Audiograbber for that. I don't use autoupdate.

I can beat match, scratch, slam, and do most any other thing that can be done with CDs or vinyl but the bottom line is that most of what I do is weddings and I rarely need to do those things.

Yes, most of what I do involves pressing play but it is knowing when to press play and with what song to press play.

The computer has made my job as DJ easier. I can find songs faster, bring video into the mix, and, if I still worked with lights, could use the computer to control that as well.

In regard to those still using CDs, if that is where they are comfortable, fine by me.

They don't want to force it on her (we could just lock up the CDG's) because she's Japanese, and she caters to the older Japanese crowds that come in on her nights.

She's used every excuse in the book to not use a PC. I know for a fact she's PC literate, she uses one every day in her day job. She says its too hard, we even went as far as designing a special interface just for her (called ezmode) that's nothing more than dumb juke style (punch in the song #, it starts playing).

So with that story in mind, how do I go about changing her attitude?

Toq, not breaking here, but if you had made the question person/situation specific in the first place we could have avoided a few pages of crap....

Anyway, you might try inviting her in during the day, or going in on HER day (even better). Ask her for some sort of info regarding computers ( whether you need it or not ) that's NOT karaoke related. Get her to show you on the house PC. Then PATIENTLY and subtly try to get her into a session od PLAYING around with some of the effects and software...SLOWLY and SUBTLY. Leave any my way/your way adversarial stuff at the door. Just get her to PLAY with it. She might get a kick out of it. Do this more than once- NO PRESSURE.

If she's gonna switch, it's gonna be HER idea, with only the tiniest bit of guidance from you. You push, and she'll push back. If you don't, maybe she won't, and you may be surprised at the blending of the ways.

If she doesn't switch, she doesn't. You do your show for your patrons, she'll do hers. and let her be. Unless the owners have made you her boss, it ain't your gig. As for her giving "every reason in the book": whether you agree with them or not, they are HER reasons, and she should be shown the same respect that you would want.

On the other hand, Toq, thru all of our jabbing and goofing on each other, I have never even seriously suggested that YOU should be disc based just because I think it's better. I respect your dedication and love for this business and know you always give your best. That's the important thing. Maybe she should get the same. Her patrons are hers because they like the way SHE does it.....

I think someone is getting annoyed

also its getting boring now

mine is bigger than yours!!!

Hey guys.... there's some dude outside the chat room wanting to pick up a dead horse for the glue factory.

**personal opinion**

As long as the guests are properly entertained, the paying client is satisfied with the value the dj/entertainer gave, does it really matter if it was Dual quad Pentium model 6000 (yes, no such thing) or a home cd deck, or cassettes, or vinyl, or an ipod????

It isn't the tools... it IS what is done with them.

I would rather have a good Ipod dj that knows what he or she is doing than a fancy (name your equipment) jock that does not know how to use it properly.

Now WAIT a minute......:sqeek:

And will someone PLEASE tell me why clicking "manage attachments" does nothing? Can't post a picture to save my life..

You are becoming a Luddite Joe :sqwink:

Click on the new attachment icon (the paper clip) and follow it through you should have no problem

Let's see if this works: .....Nope. Can't get the browse box or anything else. No upload options at all. Maybe someone could post a walk-thru?

I wrote this for you a couple weeks back Joe: http://www.ourdjtalk.com/faq.php?faq=special#faq_attachphotos -- Posted a link for ya.. Guess you missed it.. That has screen shots and all. :) Hope it helps.

Dan, I did as required. To Re-iterate: Nothing happens when I click the Manage Attachments button. No window opens. Nothing. Note: If I hit it without using the ctrl key I get the spam click. If I use the key it unblocks, but still nothing happens.

I dont care what Dj you are your a Dj period so if you think your better than anyone else thats crap

everyone is and has different abilities so dont say that you can do better than another Dj

I have seen good dj's and I have seen CRAP Dj's and some that have tickets on themself and never last very long as a Dj period

whats the use even saying anything here, its how much the person does to entertain and if he gets repeated work all the time , not every so often....

Hi!
I think(but thats me) older djs like me we like smaller things to care on gig.My first laptop gig was about 8 years ago with Toshiba portige and Atomix 1.0.Since then i cant imagine to care my cd-s and cd players with all other things to gig again.I use iPod for back up but thanks god newer not once have used.
So for smaller gigs is my setup:mixer, laptop,iPod,Bose L1B1(one system i take both to bigger gigs),cables and thats it.All together weight is about 55-60kg.
But again-thats me,i dont like too carry heavy things with me around.
Good mix
