Let me ask this first. Have you had an event you were asked to do that you were super excited that they picked you to do the event? That's where I'm at right now.

Last Saturday I was doing an event like I said in an earlier thread. I was asked to come upstairs. The committee upstairs was looking for a DJ to come do a basketball tournament and they wanted me to give them a price. I decided to leave the price as is and just pray to God that if it was meant to be I would get it. This committee had a meeting yesterday and I got a phone call today telling me I got the gig! Like I said I'm super excited about doing this gig.

It's going to be at the Civic Center in East Orange, NJ on November 16th. It's going to be a very long day. The event is to be from 12pm-12am. So I'll have a super long day for this one but it will be well worth it. I can't wait for this one! I know on Sunday I'm going to sleep all day after this one.

Me and my main partner will be doing this one. My partner talked me into bringing what I would like to call the Canute wow factor. Our setup will consist of the 4 Yamaha powered speakers and the 2 double 15 Yamaha speakers. He decided we need to be super impressive. Give them something they aren't expecting from us.

I really wanted to do a gig where we could use all 6 speakers so I could finally get to hear how it would sound and now we have one!!!!!!!!!! I know some will say what's the big deal. It may not be a big deal to you but considering who I used to be and what I used to do, it's a big deal to me! I plan on knocking them dead so they will have us back again and again for other things. Hopefully this will be a setup to one day I can say I finally get to do a convention. Got to run and have a good night or day depending on when you get to read this.

Mix if it is in a gym that much power will be over kill and it will sound like crap. Now if you have a few hundred feet of cable and run it around the 4 corners of the room then you may get a good sound. Just do not stick them all together right near the DJ table and expect a great sound. As for getting the job Like DJCC asked what did you quote them for me that would be a $1800 at the very least.

Jimmy please let me say this with all due respect. If you told them you would do this event for $1,800.00 they would laugh you out of the door. It's for the 12 step program I'm involved in. So they would never pay that because that would eat up all their profit. People are only going to pay something like $8.00 for a ticket and $10.00 at the door. That's not a lot of money to pay for an all day event like this. They will have a bunch of speakers there more then likely talking about recovery in another room somewhere.

There is a very famous DJ that when he does my home groups area's tournament he gets $500.00. Now I'm not as famous as he is. He's been all over seas and has played in a lot of big name clubs around our area. So with that said I've been told I'm as good as him. That's a nice thing for people to say. That's a great compliment. Now this same DJ many years ago used to DJ on the radio on 107.5 WBLS. That's how famous he is.

Now please be kind and don't say the only reason they got me to do it is because of the price quote. Please keep an open mind and remember people aren't spending a lot of money to attend this event and the event is to raise money for this particular area. The pay is $400.00. I know some of you wouldn't waste your time doing this for that kind of money but for me it's my way of saying thank you God for sparing my life when I was using drugs. Also the fact that I'm even back in business after getting rid of everything from before due to my addiction is a blessing. Got to get ready to go to a funeral. Have a wonderful day.

Mix you were told you were as good as him because you are cheaper then him and they want to make you feel good. I am glad to see that new business plan went is being put in place. As for them laughing at me for the price I would have given them, I just would not care because I wouldn't want the job for anything less. You just do not get it and will never get it. It is wonderful that you got the job and you are excited but make no mistake they took you because of price and nothing more.

They took me based on my level of skill. When it comes to such events they need someone who will make the crowd happy and want to come back to another event like this they are doing. Not someone who will have them say we're never coming back.

I wouldn't expect you to get it because you're not a member. You wouldn't want the gig not just because they won't pay your price but it's not the type of gig you would like to do. And if they did pay you that much you would only be doing it for the money and could care less about the event itself. This for me is not about the money but the fact that I've been trying for a long time to get to do events for this 12 step program and now I'm getting my shots after not giving up. Now as for the people who have been telling me I'm as good as this other DJ. Those are people who have nothing to do with paying the DJ or deciding who the DJ should be.

Mix you do live in a different world then the rest of us. You live in the world of fantasy. If you are not mixing your old school house then you are screwed. You can do only one thing. As for myself I can mix and play everything without help. without a partner, without anyone but me. I would not want this job because of one reason and one reason only. THEY ARE NOT PAYING ME THE RIGHT AMOUNT. Good for you that you are in a 12 step program but you need to be in a 36 step program to understand one thing. YOU ARE A HACK DJ AND NOTHING MORE. You will never make good money doing this. You are too old and too set in your ways to be a real DJ. You can talk about wanting to more all you want but the truth is you are a low end DJ.

Tell you what if you want to prove yourself I will be happy to bing you in to one of my clubs for a two hours and you get to do what you want. I will pay you $250 for the two hours work. If you do well you get to come back again. Sound like a good plan to you? You do not have to bring any gear, all you need is your music and you can even bring your little board with you.

Oh yes you are right about one thing. I would only be doing it for the money because that is all I care about. I would never do a job like this for less then what I am worth. Again they do not care about your skill because there is no skill needed during a basketball tournament. You have to hit play and hope people like that song.

Are you suggesting people come to a basketball tourney for the DJ?
First let me say this. People already know ahead of time there will be a DJ there and at the end there will be dance party. So they certainly want someone that will have them up dancing enjoying themselves.

Now Jimmy I don't if you know what it's like to be a drug addict. That wasn't a pretty picture for me at the end. I remember praying to God at the end to die. Now having said that I'm thankful to God for 3 things among others. I'm thankful to still be alive, Not using drugs and being able to get back to doing what I love to do. Especially considering I got rid of all my gear in my active addiction.

Jimmy they have these types of events to look to raise money to pass on to look at ways to help someone else out there that has a drug problem and to keep meetings available for people to come to so they can get help if they want it.

This gig is about possibly saving someones life out there in the world. Now as far as music goes it's not about me. It's about what music is needed to cover an event. There's more to life then house music or in this case as you said old school house music. That's not all I play. So basically I already know what types of music is needed to do this gig. Speaking of which I'm very careful today what gigs I take and don't take. Now once again you've got it wrong partly. Yes part of their reason they picked me was based on price because they need to show the area they turned back in a nice profit from this upcoming event to justify them doing it again. My plan is to impress them so they will want me to come back again. That's the reason for bringing all that gear and not our basic setup. Besides we've been dying to do an event that we can use all the speakers we have to see what it would sound like.

As for your invitation about coming to one of your clubs and playing for 2 hours. I didn't know you owned a club anywhere. Give me a date and a place for me to check out one of these places you're talking about to see if I'm available. All I want to do is check the place out. I like to see who they are allowing to come in and out of a place first before I play there. My first concern is safety. I could care less how much money a spot wants to pay me. Now as for your offer of coming there and spinning for 2 hours and getting paid $250.00, that's a nice offer. However I choose the price and let an owner decide if that's what they want to pay me and not the other way around. I'm just saying. Yes $250.00 for 2 hours of playing is a great deal. I also would like to sit in a night to check out what music would I need to play to get a feel for the crowd.

Oh yes. Why this invitation all of a sudden? Do you think I need to prove something to you? I'll tell you what sir. Next time I'm playing in the bar in Orange, NJ I'll let you know when that is so you can if you're available check me out then. How does that sound?

Lastly when a DJ does such an event like this for them we already know it's worth a lot more then what any of us charge them. This gig is easily worth 1k considering that many hours and the long day ahead because first you've got to get up early to load up and get there to setup so you can be on time. Then stay there till the end and after that load the van up and then take it back to unload it. So I plan to sleep all day Sunday after this gig. Doing this gig is not all about just me but helping someone else out possibly. I'll do you one better. The event is on November the 16th at the Civic Center in East Orange, NJ. It's from 12pm-12am. Why not come there and you can check me out then? I don't know the address off hand but I can find out as I wanted to do a site visit. Especially since I don't live that far away. It shouldn't take me no more then 10 minutes to get there if that.

Mix I am in charge of the entertainment at one particular club. I make the choices on what DJs play at the place. The owner of the club does not like dealing with it so he hired myself to handle it. I will send you details this week about the place and see if we might be able to work something out.

OK Jimmy let's see what happens. Let's see when I'm available to check this place out.

Don't take this part the wrong way please. They just made up an ordinance I was told in Elizabeth, NJ that you must have someone checking you for weapons or anything else they think you shouldn't bring in a bar or club. When you go out and come back they must check you again. This I heard was due to a person getting stabbed to death in a bar on first St. in downtown Elizabeth. It's a sad fact today that tings are not the way it used to be. I remember a time when you would go out and didn't have to worry about something like this happening. There was no need for security when a DJ was playing in any bar or club. I'm 55 years old and I'm careful where I go today when it comes to a bar or club. I like going to friendly safe places. Mainly places where there is a nice mixture of young and old in a place just looking to have a good time and not looking to start trouble. That's just where I'm at today. I don't care about how much money a bar or club will pay me. If I don't feel comfortable with a place I won't play there.

Making money doing what I love to do is nice but my life is more important then any money!!!!!!!!!!

Jimmy the manager from the bar in Orange, NJ called me. My friend won't be there on the 18th and he was calling me to see if I wanted to play there that night. Since I have the date pen I'll be there. If you like you can come and check me out then. I start playing at 9pm. The address is 29 South Center Street Orange, NJ. You can park your ride in the parking lot where old Center meats used to be. Let me know if you can make it or not.

If Jimmy has no idea where the 'old center meats used to be', how the heck would he know where you're telling him to park?

If you look up the address on Google Maps, they have it in street view and the closed building across the street still has the Center Meats signs all over it.

BTW, the bar name is Private Place Lounge (at least I assume as it's the only bar on the strip).
