You are 55 years old. Breaking in to the Wedding market now and getting paid top dollar is never going to happen. At best for you to get the right weddings and build yourself up it will take 5 years and by that time brides will not want to hire a 60 year old man who only has 5 years of experience to do their weddings. Stick to what you are doing and be happy with it and forget weddings and high paying jobs. Just have fun going out and plsying the music you want to play.

Disagree with that it doesn't matter how old you are. It how you entertain your guests and you're into the DJ. There's a female DJ in her 70s so ages shouldn't be the contribution but experiences, skills, and knowledge of music.;-)

So you have done your share of weddings but someone steals your camera and you have no other pictures except for what is on that. Sounds like you have done 2 weddings in the past 3 years and that is about it. Agian stick to the backyard parties and the bars. You will be much happier.

That's a lame motivating advices. It like telling an hearing impair person to give up DJing because he/she can't hear the music. Talking down on people that asked for suggestion at least be more positive and not be a ahole. So who's the best DJ in the world? If it not you then stop putting people down because you're not there.

Let me please ask this question and don't take it as me attacking you. What is top dollar? I've heard others mention that. I just want to know what do you think that is? My reason for asking this is because over the years being on these forums ot6her DJ's have a difference of opinion as to what a DJ should charge to do certain events. There are those who say for example a DJ who charges $500.00 to do a wedding isn't charging enough and can't be a good DJ.

Top dollar is different in every market and there is no way I can pull a magic number out of my ass and give it to you. You keep coming back to the $500 marker. That sounds like the bull**** propaganda that the DJ organizations feed to their members to regurgitate. Be careful of those people as many tell you that they pull down XXX number of dollars to your face and when they actually aren't. Yes, many are lying to you. They're just spewing the "talking points" that they want everyone else to live by.

My question are you getting any weddings at $500 or less? If not how can you expect to charge even more than that? Swallow your pride, take some weddings for a lesser amount, then build from that. Every market is different and you have to learn to ignore the BS from the Bull****ters.

Now first I know there is a big difference in playing in a bar and going to do a brides wedding. There are things I can get away with on the mic in a bar that would never work for a wedding. Now my plan is not to rush to the top on the pay scale. I learned years ago from Bob Carpenter you have to build up to that.

No ****. There's a world of difference and there's a world of difference in what a Bride expects now compared to 20 or even 10 years ago. You need to be able to deliver those, not just promise stuff on your site that you don't really offer. In other words, quit lying to prospective clients. If you don't do uplighting, photobooths, etc. Don't advertise that you do. Honesty is a big cornerstone in this business. If people think you're full of ****, they'll never book you, no matter what your "price" is. There is no way you can get to the top, unless you start at the bottom and you don't seem to want to do that. If we're talking about climbing a ladder, "where do you start?" At the freakin' bottom, not the middle and not the top. It's a very simple concept. :)

Now as for the website I'm trying to be patient with the guy that built it.
He had a big tragedy. His house had 70k damage due to hurricane Sandy. So he's been trying to get things together.

If he had all that damage, one would think that he'd be eager to make some money and get his act together and do the work for you. Fire the ****er and get someone else and quit letting him pull your chain. The money you wasted on your facade could have gone a long way in getting your site to a better level. Yes, the facade is "icing on the cake" and not a necessity. Your website should have come first as it's the tool that customers will find you and hopefully contact you for a booking. Can your ****in' facade do that? I think not. It's one of the many things that have distracted you like a person with ADD...."Oh, look there's something shiny, I must have it." You've got to learn about "self control" and setting priorities. Instead of jumping from one trivial thing to the next.

I'll call him some time later this week to see how he's doing. He mentioned he was looking to make changes to the site.

Yeah, yeah. Excuses, excuses. If he was going to that, he would have done it already. IMHO, you're getting chumped by him. Just like your partners screw you over. You allow this to happen because you have no clear idea of what you're doing and these people sense that, and take advantage of the situations that you allow them to take advantage of. To be honest, I don't blame them.

Trust me I don't plan to jump off the roof.

No one said you should end it all.

That's why I mentioned I was looking to pay for 3 months to see how things go.

Yup, another shiny "thing" that will suck the money out of your wallet and will more than likely give you nothing. IMHO

Just wanted to start there and build up our ranking online.

Then why haven't you spent some money getting a paid listing with WEDJ? That will help you get some assistance with your online rankings without promising you leads that will never come.

Do what you're going to do, but quit crying about the god damn drama and get yourself some books on marketing, business planning and read them and do something "positive" about your situation.

I have my doubts that you will though, you seem to go through the same cycle over and over.

Oh when you go through and read everyone of his posts you will see where it all comes from. Dealing with this ass for 6 years now and he still doesn't get it and never will. Same questions over and over and never takes any advice.

Dj Jimmy D take it easy. You're going to have a heart attack. I said I was looking into paying 2 months for the service. I didn't say I was certainly going to do it. I probably will just to see where it gets me. I used to have a paid listing with wedj.com and it changed so much that it stopped doing me any good. It used to be a good thing but later on became a waste of time and money.

Mix wont change no matter how much info has been shown to him

its all about him and he will NEVER learn

HE cant even do a BUSINESS PLAN and I have shown him many a time where to do one for FREE

he will NEVER CHANGE

have a nice day

Sorry it's 3 months for $25.99 a month. If you go for the whole year it's $19.99 a month. I wouldn't commit to a whole year. Just want to test the waters like others have and in 1 or 2 bookings it was worth it.

You can do all the advertising you want spend thousands and get ZERO results if you can't sell them on the phone or by email....

Here's a condensed version on marketing....You need to be consistent and be everywhere you can that includes free ads, Facebook and your paid marketing it's called top of mind awareness. If you plan on going in for two months just send me the check it will do you the same benefit as giving it to Wedding Wire or whomever is the treat of the week this week. The advertising you do now if done on a consistent basis should start paying off next year there is no instant gratification here

You are now in Wedding season people aren't booking this time of year anyone that needs a DJ has one or is waiting until the last minute in hopes of getting someone for half nothing. If you had taken this advice back in December when it was the booking season you wouldn't have time to worry about it now. If you plan on running short term paid advertising do it from Dec to March when it's the BOOKING season

The best marketing you can do is word of mouth do what you have to do to get out there and get playing if you are worth your salt word will spread

It seems that DJs love buying new equipment don't like investing in advertising. It's hard to know what route to go when taking a risk with advertising, because it may not do anything. But the right ad campaign could also make a big difference in how much your phone rings and how many email inquiries you get.

Spending time learning and utilizing SEO for your website would be wise IMO. Facebook works great for those that put the time into it. But once again, you have to learn what works on FB and utilize it.

I haven't tried google adwords, but I might give it a try.

Next, you have to read a few books on sales and treat it like you're taking a college course. Spend a few hours a week learning and practicing the art of selling. Is this getting redundant?

Giving good customer service and great performances is most important, and that should increase with experience.

I used to have a paid listing with Wedj.com and decided to stop it as it stopped producing anything for me. They were much better a while back then they are now. You may like them but all I see them doing is sucking money from me and producing nothing any more.

Jas try and tell that to Mixfactor he cant even do a BUSINESS PLAN for himself!!

I got an email stating Steve had a hard time getting into the site. He said the changes should be done by the 20th.

I just see the need to get some advertising and not just waiting on potential clients to call. Since I am online why not advertise there? Those are 2 things that are a part of the business plan.

I have plenty of free listings and you know what free gets you. Just not willing to wait for things to happen. I've learned you want things to happen. You've got to do the work to make things happen. So I'm starting here for right now. Must start somewhere right? Referrals just haven't been good enough alone. I need more action taken.

Mix, if you buy paid advertising without having your website in place and solid, you're an idiot. Obviously, let us know when you need help writing the ad copy.

I worked for an entrepreneur once that i really respected because he tried different things. Sometimes his ideas worked, sometimes they didn't, but he learned what worked by taking chances.

So the worst that can happen is you'll find wedding.com isn't effective advertising. But like someone posted, advertising may not yield results for months or more than a year. So if you try a new ad campaign for only three months it may not be enough.

he wont listen to you Jas

he never does

I just saw something. They will allow you to pay up to 6 months for $19.99 a month. That's the max they will do. Now since some say 3 months isn't long enough do you think 6 months is enough?

Again, without a top notch website to be diverted to, it would seem to be premature. Work out your website .. THEN do the marketing. One step at a time.

Steve you're right. I'll wait to see what changes have been made to the site first before looking into advertising.
