If you buy Sony Movie Studio Platinum, you get Sound Forge Studio, DVD Architect, and lots of plug ins and effects for just about anything you may want to do for $65.

Not fond of Audacity -- that's a poor mans toy -- just like Winamp.

I also dabbled in Cool Edit back in early 2000s. It was a nice program.

One thing I very much like about the Sony stuff (they bought the company from Sonic Foundry), is they all pretty much work the same.

I use Vegas, Sound Forge, Acid, DVD Architect -- and the menu structures are almost identical. Once you know one, you basically know them all. It's basically seamless, going back and forth.

Last time I did a hit of acid was in the 70's -- then a large alligator appeared on the couch -- only it wasn't real. Figured it was not my forte to do that any more...

Sony Acid, on the other hand, is quite a nice piece of software -- you mix visually, can drop in all sorts of effects, overlays, sound clips, loops, etc.

I tried ACID about 10-12 years ago (the now Sony version ). Was cool, but the computer horsepower wasn't there to do a lot. My need to try again some day.

Works well on a Core 2 Duo, or an i5.

IMHO, it was faster before Sony bought out Sonic Foundry, but it is consistent, and there's a learning curve. You need to learn how to fade in/out loops, and effects. I usually lay down the drum tracks, then the bass, maybe some keys, then I play over top recording my guitars.
