It can Auto Mix for you from different styles. (You will need an external Mixer for Manual Mixing)

Play CDs
Has its own built in Soundcard
Can attach a Monitor & Keyboard to it for Viewing and faster searching.
Replaces a Laptop (Laptop may need a Controller but a Controller does not need a laptop)

I have used mine several times before without a Laptop.
 
This past Saturday, based on the last set of requests I received, my DJ Software Traktor tabulated the remaining time for those requests as over 1 Hour. I then created a playlist on the MEP (It has an identical Music Library as what is on my Laptop), and disengaged the laptop. It gave me an extra ten minutes lead in tear down time. Put away the Laptop, cables and Laptop Stand. I finished off with the MEP. I also do the same when doing Karaoke and also when setting up before I hook up my Laptop.

It can do MORE things than a Laptop. If you are handed two CDs to manually mix, can your laptop do that? Can you put your hand on the Laptop and have the platter reverse? A Laptop MAY need a controller but a Controller with a Hard Drive and ability to do effects, mix etc can outperform the Laptop (DJ Related applications)

I suppose you could rip both discs to the laptop hd and manually mix from there .. would cost only a couple of minutes.

I don't use discs anymore. When I need one, I have a Denon S1200 I have (in addition to the laptop's). What I might bite is a Pioneer MEP without the cd unit (or the similar SEP) but with the USB and sound card capabilities built into the player, not the CD unit. Otherwise I have the Denon HD2500 and a Numark D2 that is similar.

I use the Denon DN MC 6000 and have effects on VDJ that I use. I rarely have had anyone hand us a CD to play. When they do all that is needed is to load the CD into the draw and set it up to play. Besides I can back spin on my 6000. It's all about what works best for you. If that works for you then fine. I don't like some CD players/controllers because of how the wheels are designed on them. I like using a wheel to mix with instead of using a play button to control how I mix. I wouldn't replace my 6000 for that Pioneer. Now I certainly would love to purchase the latest Pioneer controller but that wouldn't make much sense to be as my 6000 is working great Plus why spend money on something I really don't need to spend money on. The new Pioneer is just my dream machine. I'm a big fan of Pioneer!

But that's not what you presented in the original post. You said "an alternative". If this device is superior to a laptop, then why use a laptop at all? Spend 3X-5X, and use the superior device.

This device sounds like the Cortex or the Denon HD2500 (used with the CD trays)
I have been using the HD2500 since it came out. At one time, I had moved over to my laptop (with VDJ), but wound up going back to the HD2500. For weddings, it works perfectly.

That price seems quite steep.

Usually, DJs may have a Laptop, Mixer and Controller. When you add the price of the three components, it can go well over the price of the MEP-7000. Also remember, not everyone buys lower shelf/throw away Laptops.;) My Laptop cost more than the MEP.
 
SO, we have 2 folks that overpay for their laptops .. any more? ;)

Thats good! I don't think that is too much to pay for something that is an important tool to you. It is an investment in your business. People told me I was crazy for spending $1,500.00 on my first laptop in Jan 2006. I have known some of those guys who had to replace their laptops 5-6 times since I had mine. It still runs except it does not have HDMI. My newer one that I purchased which has a larger Hard Drive and HDMI, last year, was $2,000.00. Again, some also said I am crazy. I'll watch them replace their off the shelf ones several times while mine still plugs along.

Well I guess that those who do this as a Hobby instead of a business won't see the Value, so too are those who have to go to their wives to ask permission to buy their new toys! Their wives won't let them! :bananen_smilies046:
 
My first was purchased in 2006 a second in 2008 so I would have a back up, after 7 years I have never ever had an issue with a mac book, I always buy the best that's available at the time of purchase

I've had my HP for well over 2 years and it still works fine. It cost me $500.00 plus tax. I use VDJ and only use it for DJing. Nothing else. I'm using it tomorrow.

For as often as you have Gigs its should be able to last you until you go to your grave! :laugh:
