(CNN) -- A lone gunman is dead after police said he killed at least 21 people Monday during twin shootings on the Virginia Tech campus -- the worst school shooting incident in U.S. history.

"Some victims were shot in a classroom," university police Chief Wendell Flinchum said during a news conference in Blacksburg.

Police believe there was only one gunman, Flinchum said.

"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said university President Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified." (Map of Blacksburg)

The shootings mark the deadliest school shooting incident in U.S. history, topping attacks at Columbine High School in 1999 and at the University of Texas in 1966.

The Associated Press quoted officials saying more than 20 people were wounded. A hospital spokeswoman told AP that 17 Virginia Tech students were being treated for gunshot wounds and other injuries.

Sharon Honaker at the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in nearby Christiansburg, Virginia, told CNN that four patients had been transported there, one in critical condition.

I was following this all afternoon. It's such a senseless tragedy. This could happen anywhere, any place, - the mall, school, Walmart, or the work place. We are not safe anywhere. Many of us have kids in college. Makes you step back and think. My heart aches for the parents who lost the sons and daughters for no reason other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. How sad.
 
You never know what life will throw your way in just a second. A real tragedy.
 
This is a senseless tragedy. But mark my words: the lawsuits will start flying soon. VT is going to get hit with everything you can thing of because of this.
 
My reaction...

They're already condemning the actions of the security staff... c'mon, gimme a break.

If they wait too long or not wait long enough, they'll get critisized... much like the cops... I bet they get put down next.

I've read more crap in the last 24 hours, condemning everybody the media can condemn (I guess that's their job :sqerr: ). Next thing you know, it's probably Imus's fault.

The Australian PM says we need tougher gun laws! Huh?

This guy was out to toast as many people as he could, and no law is gonna stop that. In fact, nothing is gonna stop somebody out to do that kind of damage.

The more humans in the world, the more this will happen - there is no easy cure for a virus of non-morality and values...
 
More gun laws? Watch the media and political experts come out now with 20/20 hindsight and be so much smarter than the people on the ground dealing with the situation in mid-crisis.

Criminals don't obey the rules on the books NOW! What would make anyone think a new law would have prevented this?

The culture is broken. Fix that and perhaps things might change.
 
Gun laws likely will not prevent a "thug" from getting a gun. Thugs and lifelong criminals will always be able to find a gun....I guess the issue, as I see it, is the availability and the ease of avaialability to the "non-typical" criminal.

Where do two 15 year olds get assault rifles to shoot up a school. Where and how did the young man that shot up Virginia Tech get his weapons.

I'm just trying to understand this. In Canada we have fairly stringent gun control. For me to go and buy a hand gun or semi auto weapon...it's virtually impossible. A hunting rifle is a long drawn out affair. We have a gun registry which is a fiasco; that's really moot to this issue.

Again any real criminal will be able to get a gun....I'm not saying that Columbine and Virginia Tech aren't criminals.......I hope you get what I'm trying to say....

I guess the questions is how easily can anyone get a weapon if they so desire, particularily someone who is not "criminal" savvy. Is it easer in the U.S. where no controls exist versus here, where stringent controls exist.....

Is the availability an issue; does the ease of availability facilitate these sorts of crimes?

A lot of very complex and difficult issues......
 
A point to ponder: Gun-control advocates always have a way to get guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens, but they never have a way to get guns out of the hands of criminals.
 
I look at it this way:

If one or two of the students, or professors had been packing, you would see a lot less dead people right now.

Gun laws only prevent good people from having guns. Bad people will find or make them.

I could build a gun from scratch in my garage, not a big deal. Bombs are even easier. No law would, or could stop me if I so desired.


Morals are a different story -- they can't be made from a pile of parts, they are instilled over years from decent parents, decent teachers, decent friends, and upon a decent and willing pupil.

Couple points to remember in this quest:

-Stupid people shouldn't breed.
-Violence solves nothing.
 
Frivolous lawsuits. After the first shooting it is obvious to the people involved in campus security to believe that the incident is over. It's like all the Monday football coaches that say they would have done this and that.

Who was expecting a gunman to return and do all this? Nobody, not even super Al or Wonder Jesse. There's going to be name calling and whatever against VT, when the reality is another thing.

In Mexico guns are controlled in a way that's not fair. As Rick and Bryan have mentioned law abiding people that need to defend themselves are left up the creek without a paddle, while the criminals have access to a bazooka if they need one.

Another ridiculous law in Mexico states that if you are attacked, robbed, etc. you must use equal force to defend yourself. That means if they hold you up or try to murder you with a knife, you need to defend yourself with a knife, you cannot use a gun because you're taking advantage of the criminal.
 
The ACLU is foaming at the mouth in anticipation of the lawsuits they will bring forth on everyone but the shooter (cuz he's dead, see, and dead men can't pay up.)

Why did this happen? Who knows why this or any of these type of incidents happen. A chance to be famous (or infamous) for 15 minutes, a chance to act out some intense inner rage, a chance to act out for real what is seen in many of today's videos and video games? Who knows. I don't. And anyone claiming to have the answer is full of it.

There's going to be a ton of talking head experts all telling us how guns are bad, more gun conrol is needed, etc. As stated before, criminals don't obey the laws already on the books, why does anyone think they'll start obeying new ones?

Grandstanding politicians (a majority of whom in this case are likely to be Liberal, Democrats or both) will rail against the gun and gun industry. Well, there are plenty of guns sitting on the shelves of gun dealers that aren't harming anyone. However, put the gun in the hands of a nut and you've got problems.

Remember, the terrorists who hijacked airplanes on 9/11 did so with box cutters. Timothy McVeigh blew up the Murrah building using fertilizer. No guns in either case.

Thanks Bryan. I learn much from articles written after the fact. Normally there are so many red flags, you would have to blind not to see it coming much like "surprise" suicides.

I guess hindsight is 20/20, it's easy to sit on the sidelines after the fact and say shoulda coulda woulda but we weren't there in the heat of the moment.
 
So sad... all those people killed for nothing. :(

Yeah, in time to come the soapboxes are going to be busy. Everything is a reaction now... and a lot of lawyers are going to smile all the way to the bank. The Rent-A-Cop companies are gonna make money hand over fist. Already it's started ~ campuses across the country are ratcheting up their security.

All because of one nut case student who, 40 years ago would quite likely have been committed to an asylum before he could do something like this.

But we don't do that in this country anymore. No, Sir... we're all so damned "enlightened" and "politically correct" that we can't see the forest for the freaking trees.

We haven't seen the last of it, my friends. It's just a matter of time before it occurs again. :(

VT will have to react and do something... even if it's wrong. I fear the campus may become a reverse prison with security guards, metal detectors, random searches, video monitoring etc. Look at what's become of our airports since 9/11. All that will cost a lot of money... and I don't have to tell you who will end up paying for it. I also don't have to tell you that it could happen again, even under the most secure conditions. Inmates in max security prisons can get their paws on knives, guns and drugs. All that's needed is time and patience ~ and they've got plenty of both.

But I digress. Agreed... it ain't got nuttin' to do with firearms. If guns were outlawed, only outlaws would have guns. That crazed pup could've killed many more with a satchel full of Molotov cocktails.

It happens in Israel and on the streets of Baghdad every day of the week. :(
 
Steve since those gun laws and the gun registering debacle there have been many more murders and gun incidents here in BC alone.
 
Fred you are correct. We have reached a point where PC needs to be flushed down the crapper. Stop treating kids with Ritalin and really focus on their well being. Stop the BS of trying to please everybody and sugar coating things. String people up when they deserve it and concentrate on peoples rights, not the criminals rights.

A change is needed and no, gun control is not the answer. People control is. Todays majority of kids need an education by good old dad from the 50's where respect was valued and rewarded. No more being a punk. You misbehave you have consequences.

If somebody sees something that needs attention take care of it. Don't worry about it being PC or not fix it before a tragedy takes place.

The moral of this story, and why all of us are grieving is because.......

"We all understand how much some of us take life for granted, and we can put ourselves in their shoes! We can't comprehend such a terrible act, and we can't even understand how much trouble these students are going to have! We also put this into perspective.........this could have happened at any college/school/workplace.....and its totally horrible! We dont care about the "HOKIES" we care about our fellow brethren and sisters....we just hope and pray that everyone gets the treatment, and professional help they need to help grieve their losses!"

I say a prayer all the time now, and I wish it didnt happen, but theres nothing that can be done now! Its horrible we have to live in a world where we cant "take life for granted!" Nor anyone should! Just make sure you hug your loved ones, and tell them how much you love them!

I just am sick and tired of hearing "Hokeys" .... I just hate that! Its not about the school or the mascots...its about the "tragic loss" as they students didnt even have a chance! They didnt even get to live in this awesome world we live in!

So here I pray for all who have been affected one way or another on this tragedy:

Lord,

Please lift up, and help people recover and heal from such a "horrific" tragedy! Please comfort the immediate loved ones, and help them understand that they went to be with you! Please help our nation cope with this tragedy, and help us guide strength to the people who need assistance! Lord, we ask you accept the innocent people, and that you "lift their names on high!" Because of you we are lucky we have hope, but rest assured, we can celebrate their lives, and rejoice in the ways this tragedy will affect our lives. Lord we thank you for all you have done, and we ask that you help the other victims recover, both physically, and mentally in all that they have experienced! Lord please accept our deepest prayers as we grieve this loss....

I would also like to say....my sister in laws father passed away at 51 years old tonight....kinda puts life into perspective! My dad just turned 50! So before I close this message, I would like to say....

I LOVE YOU ALL, AND THANKS FOR BEING A PART IF MY LIFE!!
