With me finding services that let me stream audio and video at a decent quality I am now offering this service to my clients. I will stipulate that the stream is dependent on the said venue gives me access to a strong internet WI-fi connection. If said connection is not available I can supply them with a mobile 4g hotspot for the internet connection where they are responsible for the cost. I am also offering a recording of the cast. This cast will be handled by a separate PC/laptop so it will not tax my gigging computer. Anyone else here is offering this service?

I've entertained the idea of casting from a gig.... in concept it'd be cool for those guests that couldn't make it to the reception or other event type to be there virtually.... I've seen folks using skype for this purpose....

As for offering a recording, be very careful with copyrighted material. Though it would include a unique video part... the audio part may fall under copyright protections.

Not that I've ever done it, but I'd think you'd have to have someone manning the camera. It would probably get boring quick to just have a fixed camera.

I'd also think that many hotel's wifi won't be fast enough to provide a great video stream.

Which leaves you dependent on 4G. In the Cleveland area 4g is in a lot of areas. But it's not uncommon to see my 4g wifi card and/or my 4g phone to slip into 3g a lot of times, especially deep inside buildings, which will make streaming impossible. This is with Verizon. Perhaps other services may be different.

My guess is that for a mobile DJ that cant count on the quality of the bandwidth from place to place, it's going to be a few years before this is something you can charge enough money for to make it worthwhile to hire someone to man the camera.

But, I hope you prove me wrong. These are just my thoughts, and not my experiences. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

What kind of client do you presume would find this to be of value?
Wouldn't it be the ceremony that matters and that better handled by a videographer?
What have you determined about the extended family/friends demand to watch a reception they weren't invited to; were unable, or chose not to attend?

Who said anything about a specific event like a reception. I do Birthday parties, reunions, jack & jills. Sometimes a relative is a shut in or are in a different country and not able to travel , this gives them a way to be part of the festivities.

OK .. my bad .. my initial reaction was you were going to stream "TO" a venue (as in you're at home in pajamas and stream to an event). Streaming from an event would be OK if you could get a wired connection .. not sure I would ever bank on wireless connection on the creation side. Could be interesting, but don't know the ramifications of broadcasting music.

Same question:
What indication is there that a demand exists for people to watch a party they are not attending? What indication is there that any client would need such a link when they already have smart phones and other consumer devices capable of making a more personal and immediate connection?

How would you make the stream interesting for the viewer without intruding on present happenings?
Will party guests "perform" for the viewers of this stream?
Will the viewer just be a fly on the wall and will that be socially acceptable?
If it's interactive would this sabotage the party by directing energies to the feedback interest of people not actually present?

I'm just sayin' - you've announced this new "capability" without any corresponding indication of need?

A few years ago, a friend's brother got one of those quick-and-easy weddings in Las Vegas. Part of the package was livestreaming the event and family and friends were invited to watch the ceremony online. The quality was "good enough" for those who didn't attend—I think they had a videocamera on a tripod, LOL. The folks back home were just happy to be able to watch.

This is something I mentioned 5 or 6 years ago but the technology wasn't solid enough at that time and to be honest I'm not convinced it is yet solid enough. I would try it on a wired connection but there would be too many variables streaming video from a hotel wireless connection or a 4G stick. The big problem with selling it is you can't guarantee it and if it's dropping out you are going to get headaches from the client

Why would they hire a DJ when they could use an Ipod?

Funeral homes all over the continent do this and in most cases upsell it. The idea has potential if marketed right and the technology supports it and it's a low cost to the vendor upsell

I see enough people already doing that themselves.

I think it's lame to "up sell" something that is so readily available to anyone with a laptop.
I think in very short order you'll be back here complaining about all the "price shoppers" who took your suggestion and went DIY with their stream.

This also has nothing to do with DJing and is not unique enough to be a meaningful sales leader or closer.

Playing music at an event is available to anyone with a laptop and speakers but yet people hire dj's. It is about how you sell the casting, much like a photo booth or any other upsell service.

The whole thing with any service you sell is that most people with any technical acumen could easily do it themselves nothing we do can't be rented or replicated they pay for someone to do it for them.

For half or less the price I charge clients could rent a sound system and plug in a laptop with Uncle Earl making announcements or they could rent a projector and screen and run a slideshow but they don't want the inconvinence so they pay a premium to have it done. Almost everyone has a 10MP camera these days and printers are inexpensive and uplights can be easily rented and placed it doesn't take a PHD but they still rent photobooths and uplighting and none of them have anything to do with DJing

You are making the point for me. I like work that is challenging, unique, or adaptive.

If anyone can do it - then your service will never be unique or scarce enough to be profitable. There will always be someone with comparable quality who is cheaper or free. This is one reason why I will never bother with streaming. I will provide an audio/video feed to anyone who wants it - but they will have to be responsible for setting up their own network and monitoring/trouble-shooting the stream.

I have talents that can be put to a higher use than setup/monitoring of home computer equipment for people. This is why I don't do photo-booths. Standing at a carnival novelty handing out silly hats, etc. is a waste of my skills and talent, and so is supervising unskilled labor to do this for me. There are also too many photo-booths out there for me to care about where someone gets that service. I don't want clock watching jobs like manning the photo-booth or a bounce- house.

So do you feel that playing recorded music is unique or scarce? There's about 60 or more in my market that have a stereo and music that can put on a dance. Can they do what I do? Probably not but they are cheaper and in some cases free but people keep hiring me.

Now that being said I would have to charge enough to pay someone else to do it and still make a profit I think in my case this would be problem number 1 and as I mentioned before I also don't feel the technology is strong enough to be able to guarantee the broadcast would last the legenth of time I'm hired.
