I thought I would ask this question since 2013 is almost here. Please don't turn this thread into a thread just about me and what I need to do. Since I'm the maker of the thread before I must leave I'll say this.

My goal obviously would be to get more gigs and better paying ones. Also to work on getting advertising that will work for us online. Then to get more pictures and video to add to our website. Then what I would love to do is to be able to buy some uplights and video screens to work on being able to do events where clients will want video. Of course that would mean learning what to do and what not to do with video. Please don't beat me up about that last part. That's just something personal I'd like to get into. The uplighting I feel should come before any video screens.

Just some of the things I'd like for our business to be into for 2013. What are your ideas? It maybe you just doing the same thing that you did in 2012. That's fine if that worked well for you. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Please try to stay away from bashing one another. What works for some may not work for all. Please do keep an open mind. I've got to run but I'll check back later.

Sorry Mix. You make it to easy.

You will have no shot at reaching any of your goals.

As for me I will continue to do what I have done for the last 20 years and continue to make great money and have a good time doing it.

You list goals, but you have no plan?

My goal for 2013 is to get a real office/meeting space. Currently, I run my business from a finished basement and meet my clients wherever it's convenient for them. While I love Starbucks as much as anyone, I'd like the "official" presence that you can only get from having a real, dedicated meeting space.

Goal #2 is to be at least as successful in 2013 as I was in 2012. It's going to be a big year.

When I was 18 I had a goal to be a Millionaire by the time I was 25. I was a hard worker, bright and a type A personality. Should have been a breeze right. I did OK but I missed my goal by a longshot The problem was I didnt have a plan.......Just another rant

There are several things I am looking in to for 2013-2014. I will for sure be offering a projector and screen as an upsell. I actually started offering it before I had one....rentals were a good way to test the waters. I made enough profit last year from upselling them even after rentals to cover the cost of a good quality screen and I just took the plunge for a projector.

I have to get more practice in to get better but before the end of the year I will be upselling slide shows also (Makes sence to me with a projector sitting around huh)

I am also entertaining the idea of buying a video library and doing some video dances, specifically retro video dances but I would be open to other things if the money was right. I have a buisness plan in place for this and have had for a few years the numbers are getting closer to where I need them to be.

Ive also been doing marketing surveys in to uplighting and photobooth. I dont forsee either of these happening this year unless my reasearch turns around

I will remain running a multi-op for at least another year but I have a plan to scale down in 2014 make the same money with less stress. Ill keep you posted on this one

My goal is to get out of the DJ software business. Most want to charge more, but want their tools for free.

Working on new commercial software, and maybe go back to playing in a band...

We have set a goal of 60 weddings this year....plus to have an improved rig by the end of the year too (JBL SRX system).....Uplighting was looked at, but just not worth the investment
It is worth it if you can find then right client to sell it to and know how much to sell it for. Look at it as an investment that will pay for itself over time. You'll need to do several events with uplighting to get it paid for.

Not a put down but just an observation of what could happen if you take the right approach.

It's an area thing dude, we never get asked for it, and honestly is not worth the effort to try to find the business when there is other thing we want to put money in (like the new rig and SEO)

Mix,

The difference between a "wish" and an "idea" is that wishes are things you want with no plan for how to acquire them. An idea is a plan.

"... to get more and better paying gigs" - is a wish, not an idea because there is no plan. An idea would sound something like this: "I plan to identify and canvas local venues that seem to be hosting the kind of bigger and better paying events and customers I would like to have." \

Then you actually go and do it.

You can't "get into up lighting" just buying fixtures. You actually need to find people who want to pay you to do it. Find the customers first and then decide what kind of gear solution is the best answer. You can make more money faster by renting gear than you can buying it and trying to pay off the expense. You buy or lease your own gear when the frequency of how often you use it makes renting a bigger hassle than the it's worth.

I am already a little ahead of schedule for my 2013 plans.
The big goal was to get a van or trailer to haul the gear.... done. Just have to work on getting 100% by the end of January. (Already over half done so that goal should be reachable.)
Other goals include:
- increasing SEO on my website
- increase personal networking by building better and more positive relationships with venues and other vendors.

Maybe you could use the uplighting in your brand new office space for potential clients to see. It certainly should make your office stand out amongst other offices and just maybe if they see how it looks in your office, they might want to buy that as an upsale. Just some thoughts but please keep doing what works best for you.

we don't use an office space, have no need for one at all, Panera Bread for us and never had any complaints
