Yeah, but you don't need to advertise it to everyone on the planet.

Being conceded will not make you any friends -- doing a good job, will make you many. If you're good at something, people will recognize it, without you needing to tell them.

I find I need to believe in me and my abilities or else I'm doomed. Once I do have that confidence I need to show that to clients. Then it's finally up to them to decide if I'm any good or not. I haven't found to many to complain at what I do.

Believing in yourself is important, but so is understand when something isn't working and make adjustments.

To me, it's more important to have a true understanding of a situation. If you really do that, you'll be able to assess a situation, understand why something did or didn't work, and keep improving. Thinking you are great at something when you really aren't isn't helping you.

Listening is another extremely important skill. Many people will be glad to help and offer suggestions so you don't make the same mistakes as they did. I don't care how good someone is at something. The ability to be a good listener will help them to continuously improve.

The 2 worst spots to be in is the person that thinks they know about something but really doesn't, and the person who knows a lot about a subject and believes they have no more to learn and doesn't listen. They are shocked as people pass them by because they stopped growing and evolving. They are the ones longing for the "good old days".

The most successful people are typically not the smartest IQ's. they are simply better at self assessment, understanding what they are really good at or really like to do, and hone that skill, be willing to fail more if needed....and are able to MARKET that skill. You can be the best DJ in the world, but if you can't self your services beyond the occasional $300 gig, not many people will ever know it.

For the bowling event it's a fund raiser and they are paying $300.00. For the convention I put in a bid of $2,400.00 which was probably the lowest bid. I won't know until later on down the line how much that DJ is getting paid and who it is.

That's two big a difference to be quoting the same client. You can't be both things at the same time.

The people to whom I quote $350 have no clue about the other kinds of jobs I do, they just think of me as one great affordable DJ among many. The people to whom I quote $15,000 have never seen me do a middle school dance or other simple gig. Neither of them would imagine me going back and forth between the two - and therein lies the rub.

This client knows you as a bowling alley DJ and that's their comfort zone with you. You can't mix and match different client expectations on a single resume' because they don't compliment one another. Once you establish an identity with someone you can't outgrow it easily unless they are growing right along with you. For example, if the bowling alley fundraiser's over several years turned into a larger fundraising organization you could perhaps grow your involvement and be recognized as capable of more. However, to simply say: "Oh yeah.. I can also do sound reinforcement for large shows and conventions too" while turning in your rental shoes conveys no credibility because they have never seen or heard of anyone trusting you with more responsibility.

I'm not conceded in what I do. My6 ego is not that big. I'm confident when I take on doing a gig. 99.9% of the time I keep that in check because no matter how good I am, there is always someone better and knows more then me. For some I'm too humble. Now I certainly know some DJ's who are not even close to my league. Then there are those who are just plain better then me and I'm not just talking about skill either.

Some are better on the mic then me. I'm not bad but I'm not the biggest fan of a mic. I hate a DJ that doesn't know when to shut up and just let the music play. I'll never say I'm the best DJ around because some can do things that I can't. Like some are great at scratching. That's not my style. The most scratching I do is to have one song that has finished playing and at the beginning of another song I'll just simply keep scratching until I decide to let that song play.

STOP DEFENDING YOURSELF!
You come to ODJT to discuss a problem you've had, or a situation you're in.
People reply to your issue.
Then you go off for five paragraphs on why you don't agree with one little thing they said,
and you completely IGNORE the highly valuable bits of knowledge.

to put it as bluntly as I can...
shut up, read what is written, take the advice given, nod your head, and say "thank you".

or DON'T POST IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Mix... Re-read the below from another thread you started. Is it possible that these people see you in the same way as you see the GLI speakers you talked about as just "ok...low budget"? To them and like you "it's not just about the price of ... but how well will it perform and how long it will last."

You may be sending a vibe that your just an ok DJ with 'decent' rates. They maybe unsure how long you'll be around because of something in your presentation leading them not to trust you to do a large gig.

So you're right. Trust may well be the issue. You can fix that though. Its all within your control.

I was in a store yesterday and saw this speaker.

Let me start this off I wouldn't buy this speaker at all! It was cute ideal but not a brand I would buy. It was a powered GLI pro speaker. It had built in blue tooth technology. That meant you don't have to hook the speakers up to wires. So that made it wireless. The salesman compared it to a JBL EON saying the JBL doesn't have an eq in the back. My partner was excited but I wan't. It sounded OK but remember it was a GLI. They have been around for a very long time. I think as long as I've been DJing or close to it.

Their stuff is low budget crap to me. I did see however with this speaker they are trying to step their game up a bit. It's just a brand name I wouldn't trust. He said it sold for $350.00 each. Another reason I wouldn't buy it. I had my camera with me and too bad I didn't take a picture of it. It was cute looking thou. Just the name and the price turned me off right away even if i was looking for some powered speakers.

They had some nice gear in the place along with some junk too. Like a Marathon speaker setup. 2 powered tops I thin with a powered sub. Marathon I think is basically a newer company that is selling low end DJ gear. Sorry but I just like only buying name brand gear. To me it's not just about the price of the gear but how well will it perform and how long it will last."

Mix do you concede to being conceited :)
No I'm confident in the jobs I do take that I know what I'm doing. If I don't feel confident we can get the job done right, rather then take a job that we may not be able to do properly. Someone that does in this business who does that so they can say they got a gig and making money is a gig whore.

It gets fixed like I said by them seeing me do more work. That's just how things are with them.

No he would wait for it to fall off a truck for $10.

Mix, You just do not get it and never will. Five years from now you still will be chasing the big jobs because youw ill not admit you are just not good enough to do them.

To answer your question on how I got the first job. Simple I was refered to them by one of my former clients. I did the job did and did it right. They didn't comment about other DJs and what they did and didnt do or what type of gear they had. They told me i did a great job and that they wanted me to do all of their work. Also it wasn't a one and done thing so whatever I was doing in Their eyes I was doing it right. Fromt hosejobs I was able to pick up even more business and hereis the amazing part I didn't have to get in to a price war with anyone and no one ever asked me to do a job for $300. To this day even going in to nightclubs/bars I get paid what I ask and not what they pay others.

The biggest issue you have is you let your brain over think everything. If you were that great at the bowling party and you showed them what your value was they would have picked you to do the job plan and simple. All of your other excuses that you use are just ways of making yourself feel better. You talked about a wedding you were trying to get that would have been high priced and meet with the bride but you didn't get the job. The reason is simple, they had no faith in you that you could do the job they wanted for their special day.

This will be my last post on this because like others have said you will never get it. You are like my father he is too old to learn new things and doesn;'t care to. He likes to do what he thinks is best.
Take it easy pal. I gave you a compliment and you took it as a slap in the face. Can't you tell the difference?

Please hear me out and keep an open mind with this post. I was upset at first getting attacked like this but I decided to take things another route. Like I said please keep an open mind.

People and Jimmy have been trying to compare what he did for Citi Corp and me doing this bowling party. There's a big difference from what he did for this corporate client and me at a bowling alley doing a bowling party. The catered food for the Citi Corp event was probably more then what was made all together between the bowling alley and the committee. I don't know what he got paid to do the event for them but I was wondering if it was more then what the whole thing cost at the bowling alley?

Let explain things please about the first bowling party I did for them. I got paid $250.00 to do it and it was a fund raiser for the convention coming in February. It was $22.00 a ticket for the bowling party. The price included food, bowling and music which was provided by me. After everything got paid the committee made off the fund raiser less then $500.00. Now considering what their profit was frm that event, how much more do you think they could pay a DJ. This time they are paying me $300.00. That's $50.00 more then the last time. I know some are going to say how do I know roughly how much they made? Because I was sitting there while they were counting out the money and paying me my money.

Trust me when I say this. The people there at the bowling party went nuts over what I did and I was told they certainly want me to do something else for them. Thus here comes their next bowling party. Now just too be fair I'm pretty sure the event Jimmy is talking about was held in a very fancy catering/reception hall. A high class place like a Mayfair Farms in West Orange, NJ. This place features valet parking.

Me I was in a bowling alley where the space is limited for a setup of our equipment. At least for what we did bring. You couldn't put any speakers on stands because there just wasn't any room for that. The whole walkway from the the back wall to the railing that leads to the lanes was only a few feet. So there was really no room for our normal way we would set things up. Plus there really was no dance floor. Some people did dance a little in the walkway and around the bowling alley side. All in all they had a great time and I got compliments the whole time I was there. Some even took a business card.

So the event was a success and I wowed them to the point that the committee decided to have me back. That's not the first time that's happened. I've either had others book us again or either refer us to someone else. Some you take and some you don't. Some get your business card and say they will surely call you. Once again some do and some don't. So to keep it simple the bowling party was a simply easy event with a simple setup and it all worked out for all 3 parties. The committee, the bowling alley and us. If you care to know what I normally use for a private event for a client I'll tell you. Just keep in mind what I normally use if I brought that would have been over kill and we would have been asked to either turn it down or asked to leave.

You are the best $200-$300 bar Dj I know. I bet it's safe to say you could find those gigs all the time. You just haven't proven to anyone that you're worth anymore. Trust me. ;)
I'll leave you with this. When it comes to doing gigs for the entity I was talking about, the most they will pay anyone is $500.00. Now this when they have their basketball tournaments. They go from 12 noon till 11:30 pm. Most of the times they pay from $250.00-$400.00. Most of the DJ's they do get are recovering addicts and we do it because we want to show our gratitude. I'm just grateful to still be alive and to be back at what I love to do. Because at one time I sold everything because of my addiction. I'm not ashamed of it. That's who I used to be. That's not me today thank God.

So for those who think they could talk them into paying you 1k to do an event like speaker jam dance, you would be laughed at and they would never call you. No matter how much you could show them you're the DJ they need. These things we do are to help them raise money to further their primary purpose and that is to spread the word that you don't have to use drugs and can find a new way to live. Ok I'm done. To steal Dennis's favorite line have a nice day.

Mix, you realize (I hope), that The Big Show shows up on all the search engines.

Just for S&G, I searched your name out on Google, and found about 1940 results. Here, DJChat, The Bar Nation, etc. Your website is up for sale as well.

Now, let's say I was looking for a DJ in your area. I would search you out on the internet, and keep finding all these posts about a recovering drug addict, that you keep mentioning in almost every post.

Do you think I would hire you?

I know this is probably fruitless, but learn to keep your mouth shut about certain things, and you might actually get gigs...

How many potential clients visit this site? I doubt any. This site is for DJ's and not the general public. I do agree sometimes I do shoot myself in the foot by not shutting up sometimes when dealing with potential clients. It's really about when to know not to tell certain things.

People search all the search engines now for anything -- I did it when I was looking for a DJ for my nephews wedding. Read his blog, checked his website, Facebook, and anything else I could find before even calling him. So, you need to be careful what you post, and where you post it -- example: Papas Pub here is a private forum, it is not indexed by the search engines, but this forum The Big Show is.

So anything you post in this forum, is going to show up on the search engines, so the potential clients will be able to easily read them.

Most boards are like that, they have public and private forums -- if you're going to say something personal, put it in a private forum where the search engines like Google can't get to it...

OK I hear you all. Now I have simple question to all. If you were looking for a DJ to do a bowling party, how much would spend for a DJ to do such an event? Trust me I'm not asking this question to make a joke.

Too many factors to consider. I would go with best value specific to the goal of my event.
