I was on my way to a function last night when i got a phone call. I thought it was from my partner. It was from another DJ i know. He was in a panic. He was doing a block party and one of his speakers blew. So he needed a speaker because he was only getting so much sound. I went back to my house and got one of my Yamaha DSR 115 tops and came to the block party which wasn't that far away from my house.
I get there and he he hooks up the speaker. The speaker that blew was a Behringer Euro. As some know a junk speaker. I also noticed that he was using 2 ALTO speakers. More junk. He said first that those speakers were good enough for the jobs he was doing. Then he went on to say he wanted to get a pair of the speakers i have. He asked me how much. I told him $750.00 which included the tax.
I then said to him i believe those speakers have been discontinued. I mentioned that they make the new DXR series. They are lighter and cheaper but i'll bet they sound great. The other thing i noticed is he had no sub and doing a block party. I also noticed that he kept switching from using his computer with Serato to using cd's. I don't understand that at all. I stopped using cd's i guess over 2 years now and have no intentions of going back to using cd's.
Moral to this story is it pays to buy really good professional gear that will sound good and work great. Like my partner says you buy cheap and you get cheap.. It just might cost quite a bit more but in the end well worth it!
I remember the salesman in Guitar Center trying to get me to buy a pair of those ALTO speaker tops and i completely passed them by. I wouldn't even listen to them to see what they sounded like. I finally got to hear them yesterday at that block party and i'm glad i passed up on them. They work but not anything i would be proud to own.
