My son si able to bring a laptop/tablet to scholl (Grade 12). They ccn hook up to their wireless and save docs to the network.

Right now he has a Gateway lappy; I'd like to get him a tablet to take...

It will need keyboard capabilities, internet and be able to run MS office apps/docs.... likley a 10" screen

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Steve I own an older Archos tablet. The reason I bought it was for it's large harddrive size (150gb in my case) it plays any video or audio file I trow at it including flac. I would buy the 101 g9 with the 256 gb hard drive but I am waiting on the MS offerings just to have a look see.

Randy - How does your son 9if he does) save files on the server at school. My son tells me that when he logs on at school, he gets mapped to his "drive" on the school server...He actually sees a "F" drive in My computer. This is where he uploads his assignments for his teachers.

I know with the Ipad you cannot save to drives or folders in this manner - you have to "sync" with i tunes. are the Android devices the same? i suppose he could save to a dropbox folder and give the teacher access....

thoughts?

He logs into a secure network and is able to access his classes from there. I believe they use apps to manage documents; they were given an iPad with everything installed.

Edit: I just did a quick search on the Apple forums and there are a variety of threads on the subject.

Ipad 2 is now $399 for the 16Gb version (what I have) .. more than sufficient to surf with.

I have an ipad 2. love it. Not sure how you would sync up, Steve, but I am guessing they have a way, given the popularity of ipads and apple. I have an android phone and have had a little work with android tablets.

The biggest challenge I have with android is that there is a ton of really cheap products out there using android, and it really doesn't work well on those things. It tends to work well on higher end products, but the market is flooded with cheap phones and tablets that simply dont work well....or if they do, not for long. I'm guessing that some apps conflict or don't go away totally when deleted. I've seen it over and over

No product is perfect. Apple certainly isn't. But if you need to count on a tablet for your son, I would not trust a android yet, and I certainly would not recommend a cheap tablet. You'll be setting yourself up for frustration, IMO.

I've heard good things about the kindle fire. I wonder if it's because they don't allow android's app store.
