This is a great story why not to assume someone is only going to spend a certain amount of money.

I was at the network meeting this Tuesday and a few of us were at the restaurant in the hotel. DJ Mike Weider told us a grat story. One that certainly is a once in a life time happening.

He told us he had a client contact him about doing a surprise 50th birthday party at a VFW Hall. He said his thoughts was the client was looking to spend $350.00. That's what he expected they would pay a DJ to do this event.

Client went on to say they didn't want the venue to look like a VFW Hall. He showed us the before and after pictures. It was truly awsome! He had someone supply some furniture. Next was uplighting that he has himself and then pipe and drape. Trust me after all was done it looked dope!

He did a wedding earlier that day and left there to do the surprise birthday party. He told us how the event went from him thinking the client was looking to spend $350.00 to where they spent $8,200.00. He said after he paid the perople to setup the decor and lights his take was $5,000.00! He mentioned he didn't mind paying the other people to set things up for the event. Hell if i could make $5,000.00 after it's all said and done i weouldn't mind paying them either.

Just had to share that story. Now i doubt that will happen to him again in his life time but what a hell of a thing to happen.

Wow! That was a grat story. The perople that would book a VFW hall for a birthday party weouldn't mind paying $8,200 for a DJ.

There is something I guess we can agree on.

To the O.P. Come down to earth Just cause you have Lunch with the President doesn't mean you will ever become the President.

Other DJ's a great line of b$llsh!t!!

Just because you could never do such a thing doesn't mean someoene else can't. Our thinking ususally when we hear about a client only wanting to spend $350.00 is that client is cheap. That's not always the case. Some will spend more if you can truly show them why they should spend more. Obviously he did that.

As for what he sells it's all in networking with other vendors. The furniture came from a company that supplies such things for people to rent. He has his own set of uplights and now he just had to pay some one to set things up. I know it's not something that normally happens but it can happen. The main part that got missed is he thought that this client was a $350.00. That's what he assumed and you know what they say when you assume something.

Mike Wieder's actually a decent guy. While it's expected that some bullsh*t will be thrown around when DJs get together, Mike's probably not making up the numbers. His company focuses primarily on Mitzvahs and Weddings in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. His clients are people who have money to spend.

Here's what I love about Mix's story: He starts off by telling us about assuming someone only wants to spend $350.00 on a DJ, when in the end they drop $8200.... on lighting and decor... which Mix raves about. This wasn't a lucky gig. Go make some phone calls... you'll find that if you want to pipe-and-drape an entire room, light it up, and fill it with lounge furniture, you're going to spend $5000 minimum. Why did Mike get $8200? Because he's got a reputation for doing things right, and he's a good salesman.

Mix, did he tell you what the DJ got paid? I guarantee you it wasn't $8200, or even $5000.

First, in your original post, you stated “He said his thoughts was the client was looking to spend $350.00.” Never stated that the client TOLD him they wanted to spend $350.

Since they allegedly spent $8,200 on a DJ for a 50th birthday party, they were NEVER a $350 client to begin with.

Second, the $8,200 was spent on décor and pipe & drape, NOT JUST ON THE SERVICE OF A DJ.

Third, If his profit was $5,000 out of $8,200, he F&%kED the client.

So you are correct, I could never up-sell someone that wanted spend $350 for a DJ, and make them pay $8,200.

He was the DJ and i beleive he knew the client and they knew him. So they knew that he would deliver the goods. From the pictures it certainly looked like he did just that.

My point to all of this wasn't just about what Mike did with this client. It's about how you cvan have a client only thinking of spending but so much and spending a lot more because the evidence shows them why they should. No this will not work with every potential client. Some are just stuck at a price point and won't budge but given the right pitch some will open the wallet a bit wider.

Mix, really, you just did your FIRST $500 gig, stop trying to blow smoke up our a$$es and face the facts, YOU ARE a $250 DJ. Join as many groups that you want to, but until you can STOP and focus on being a good DJ, you will NEVER be more then, as you say, a Craigs List DJ.

I wish there were more like you in my area, I'd be a multi-op with 15 DJs.

My advice to the O.P. of this thread

Be happy in who you are

Concentrate on DJing and only DJing

Master your DJ skills

Master your equipment

Perform as often as you can

Raise your rates slowly and steadly over the years

Become friends with a multi op and show him loyalty for the work that he brings you

Stop hanging out with people you will never be

No need to respond to me, I'm done with this thread.

Do you think the negative review is out of touch concerning this DJ after we just heard this story on this thread?

It's a review from someone who didn't even hire him... and I'd actually somewhat agree with one statement in that complaint:

Wieder is one of those people who thinks everything is a joke and doesnt realize when he goes too far.

We're in a fun business... and what makes Mike a great Mitzvah emcee is his ability to kid around with people. I'm not sticking up for him because we're best pals (we're not), but occasionally, the prospective clients that we meet with are ones that we get along well with. It's unfortunate that in this case, somebody decided to write an essay about it.

Back to the topic: Mix, you keep changing the point you're trying to make every time you post. Stay focused.
