Tip Jar?

Just label the jar "Music Fund" or something.

Side note: I always zero out that line and write the total on the copy I hand back so that someone cannot fill it in later. I tip in cash.

I totally agree with you. In most cases they expect a minimum %. WTF :eek: The Restaurant where I took a friend for lunch today expects at least 25%. They are lucky I like Mexican Food, service was first class and the place itself very posh! $65.00 for a Lunch "Special" is too damn much in my book!:monshocked:
 
My guess, is that a lot of folks here have never worked bars...

Sometimes you work for free, sometimes a portion of the door, sometimes the owner will give you 50-100 bucks for your trouble. The only way to make any money is by tips.

This is not some posh country club wedding, where yer getting $1500 for the same amount of hours -- you have to hustle to make a living.

Like I said earlier, I wouldn't put one out at that posh country club wedding -- but you can be damn sure I will have a stuffed one in a bar or club.
 
Rick, I do bar gigs 2-3 days a week.(Sun-Thurs.). I charge the venue a decent amount and I have never once in my 27 years of djing have I ever put out a tip jar.

I have something called pride that gets in the way.

Fair enough -- I have to pay bills though. Your loss IMHO.

My pride extends to the software I write -- anything else, I couldn't care less. I'll sweep streets if need be.

You said a mouthful there. I've never used a tip jar because my ego isn't that big. I just do what i do and if they want to give me a tip when i'm done fine. If not fine too. My main goal in all of this is getting paid what is due to me and anything after that is extra gravy.
 
if you need tip jars here in Oz you then need to raise your rates

its so cheesy no matter how its told!!

I say if you have to do it in the US of A
you need to raise your rates as well....
 
Bars and restaurants have "tips" because their employees are paid (less) based on getting tips.
I am paid appropriately for what I do. A tip is just a way for a client to thank you.
(or to make you stay later)

And Canute, if you paid $65 for a Mexican lunch...
you don't NEED to add a tip...cause it appears the tip is INCLUDED!

Around here for bar DJ/KJ, it is not uncommon to be paid a nominal amount ($100-$150) and then either a percentage of the bar take or entry fee (if any). The economic climate here kind of dictates it, so the tip analogy to a waitress is more often the way it is.

I rarely eat out but when I meet a friend for lunch somewhere that is an exception. Mexican food, Thai food, Beans and hot spices have no effect on me like it does some people. I have been using balanced food all my life, three courses, a meat, a starch and vegetables or legumes in some sort of sauce gravy.
 
To each their own, I guess. I dont do bar, or club, gigs; primarily wedding, anniversary, and private party events. I wouldnt put one out at any event I do. I got a $200.00 tip at a wedding last weekend simply by keeping the B&G happy and smiling.
