Random question I couldn't find anything online for ...

I'm trying to clean up my karaoke files. I normally list the Artist with the "The" following if needed (such as Beatles, The) .. Do you do that for Song Titles as well or is the convention to leave the "The" at the beginning of the title?

It is entirely up to you. I leave the "The" in front such as "The Temptations". Sax and Dotty will find it anyway. As I start typing it will start bringing up the names

For song title, I leave it as is. For the artist, I remove 'The' if it's at the beginning (The Beatles, The Bee Gee's).

FWIW Most MP3 players seem to ignore 'the' and 'a' when they're sorting by title or artist.

The reason I tag my files like this is because of my song book software. It will sort the files as they are named. Some karaoke manus will name the files "The Beatles" while others will name the files "Beatles, The.

Cuts down on the number of pages needed to print karaoke books.

The software scans the hard drive for mp3+g files. So let’s take The Beatles for an example. I have three versions of “A Hard Days Night”.

One is tagged “The Beatles – A Hard Days Night.mp3”
Second one is tagged “Beatles, The – A Hard Days Night.mp3”
Third is tagged “Beatles, The – Hard Days Night, A.mp3”

It will create three different listings in the book like this.

The Beatles
A Hard Days Night

Beatles, The
A Hard Days Night
Hard Days Night, A

If I change all of the tags the book will print like this

Beatles, The
Hard Days Night, A


I have just eliminated two lines per book, just on that one song.

Lees lines=less pages.

Yes The is not necessary and makes for more confusion in my humble opinion. I type in searches with the prominent name and it always comes up. One issue I have is with P Diddy, Puff Daddy and Puffy or J Lo, Jennifer Lopez, KESHA or Ke$ha.

I do it for work, but hate the way it looks. Sometimes, I'll just apply "The" where it's absolutely necessary. However, in the case of lists or books for the public, I would use the ",the" method. People tend to look for titles without "the".

I was hoping there was a "required standard" so I didn't need to actually think about it . I was starting to go with the "The" or "A" at the end, then came across a song like "The Sign" and it just doesn't look right as "Sign, The" so I'll have to ponder some more ....

These are methods I employ for Listings, Searches and Printing Books.
I will name the Artist as they may appear on an Internet Search eg. The Spinners, The Temptations.
Second If I have 4 Different Versions of a Karaoke Song, It will show up as 4 Individual results on my Software search. For Printing the books, I do it two ways, each with no duplicates...Books are printed using Excel, two columns By: Title and Artist and then by Artist and Title. So there is no need for me to edit the songs to save space. Each song is on one line with no duplicates in songs. I do not print the various versions in the books there is no need.

Another thing, I do not make one complete volume of songs in one book, I divide each volume in four.
By Title: A - F, G -M, N - S, T - Z
By Song: A - F, G -M, N - S, T - Z
So I end up with 8 books for the audience to use. More manageable that way instead of one or two heavy, thick books.

If you want required standards, work for someone other than yourself. You can think as much or as little as you want.

It's up to you but, I drop the "The and A" from every song and Artist.

Those particular words are useless for searches and most assume the word in the artist or title.... When printing books by artist it eliminates having to look through all the artists with "The" just to find "Kinks" and on the same token song titles with "The" number in the 1000s it seems. You do the math.

I have not had a complaint yet, there is such a thing as flipping the pages while seeking in alphabet order. Who has the time to go through thousands of songs to edit "A"s and "The"s? I don't. LOL

I didn't have to there's a handy program from the maker of Karma called Karaoke File Manager that does it automagically... Well worth the money... It will batch update and rename... Super simple to use too even you could do it

I use FastTracks Karaoke Songbook Creator. I also do not have any duplicates in my books because I make sure the tags are in the format I want.

I only do books by artist and the other by title. I have been to a couple of shows where the books are broken apart like yours,
Pi$$i$ me off every time. I can't stand to go around looking for the book I want.
