Reading some of the recent posts I wanted to ask this question. Vote by choosing your main option in the Poll and then elaborate.
Other Versions Of Songs

I want to give an example of two favorite songs that I play and always get a good response from people who have never heard the version (They would often come up and ask me if it is new and where they can get it). Stayin Alive by Bee Gees and The Way You Move by Outkast. I almost never play the original versions even when the song itself is requested. The version I play is the remixed Funkymix version.
I could not find the Funkymix Version of Staying Alive online but here are two other versions I have and did find.

Really depends on the crowd. Up here in the sticks you could get shot for playing anything other than the radio mixes.
it totally depends on the gig and my audience. let's go with the bee gees, since you've given us a couple of examples of their music—i'll play the original "stayin' alive" if the audience includes lots of white folks. if i'm playing for a black/white mixed or younger crowd, i might play the coolio/bee gees' version. if my event is even more multicultural, i'll play something like jinusean's version of "how deep is your love," which is sung in english with raps in korean.
if i'm playing for a jazzy crowd, i might slip in beatles' tunes by artists like wes montgomery, freddie hubbard, and sergio mendes. i have all kinds of alternative versions of 'familiar' songs by artists from around the world. if i were ever told to stick to the "mobile beat top 200" or some other stale list, i'd probably fall over dead.

Try the Hidden Beach Recordings Series. You may like it. Kinda Jazzy Hip Hop. There are about six volumes. Here are a few of the songs. This is going to come as a complete shocker, but I make my own mixes as I go along
I would say about 30% of the tracks I play (3-4 out of 10) are live mashups that I make on the fly. Usually I drop an acapella over the song I am currently playing, then come in behind both of those with an instrumental and then another song on top of all that as the next one. So usually I am juggling 3-4 tracks at once, all on beat manually with no sync
That has become part of who I am as a DJ though. Not many DJ's can do that, and it kinda sets me apart, and I can't imagine just "regular" mixing anymore
The only time I can't do this is when I mix with videos. I would be able to if I had a bunch of acapella videos though. Anyone know where to get some?

@ ahoustondj: i do like hidden beach and play tunes by them much to the delight of quasi-young, mixed crowds. thanks!
@ DjDennis: i like "happy together" by jazzy crooner mel tormé. it's just shy of corny and quite delightful when sandwiched between the right tunes. (sometimes i like to play the turtles' version first.)

Too long to play out with, however I'm in love with this mix. In love enough to buy the set it comes from.

I voted for "PLAY THE BETTER VERSION".
With changing tempos and strange intros, some of the radio mixes just don't work well!
But I never use a remix if it is not true to the original.
(the only thing the same is the vocals, and they are not even the same tempo as the original)
