The only problem with multi-ways is working out a good cross-over strategy, especially if the drivers have different sensitivities. With an active crossover (driverack or similar), it gets a little easier, but after a 3-way, you really have to know what you're doing.

Always easier when the two girls know what they are doing!!! :tricool:

I don't know .. sometimes the inexperienced overcompensate for lack of knowledge.

I think the net result will be similar. Depends if you want active or passive. I'd go with the SRX if I was using passive tops and the KW with active tops just to minimize wiring. Cost is probably similar once you get an appropriate amp and crossover.

The SRX with an good Crown Macro Tech amp for power will leave the KW in the dust. That would be my first choice between the two. It does not matter what is used as mains/tops.

Canute, unless you've heard both, not sure where you get that idea. The KW is every bit of the SRX equal, even with a Macro-Tech. On paper, the SRX goes down an couple of Hz further and the KW gets 5db louder.

It does not matter which tops are used with which sub, but with an active top, you could run a single signal cable to the sub and daisy chain the top, with passives, you could run a single multi-conductor cable to the sub and daisy-chain the pass-thru signals to the top. If you mix, you'll need to run both signal and speaker level cables .. just a decision point, not a deal-breaker.

The SRX718s is being closed out (replaced by STX), so you might get some good pricing.

This was my opinion about two subs, my choice! Yes, I have heard them both. From what I experienced, the JBL have a warmer sound.

Today I got around to hearing the KW's. I like them! The 3 way is a bit much for me being mostly a one man show. So I think the KW 152 will be my new back yard, bbq out door set up. They fit my current budget and should give me some good years. I love Yorkville Unity, JBL SRX and Danley speakers but I simply can't afford that level of equipment these days.

I now have 2 LS 800p and 1 LS 700p subs, 2 RCF ART 325i tops and a set of Yorkville NX 600 tops (currently for sale) if they don't sell I will keep them. Im quite pleased with my tiny arsenal, nothing like you big guys on here but it works for me.

I do have those Unitys going up for sale soon  .. Just have an outdoor show next week and an outdoor graduation in June and then I will sell the tops/subs and probably 2 of the QSC amps.

Nice. What are you replacing them with Steve?
Not sure yet. First I need to get some smaller subs. Looking at the QSC KW, RCF 705AS/905AS, and JBL PRX. After that, another set of mains. Probably a 15" 2/3 way. Not sure which at this point. Just looking to drop both size and weight from the current set.

Could I use my current HPR tops with KW subs? I've heard mixing HPR and KW tops together doesn't work but what about if I just change the subs to KW?

Why wouldn't it work? You should be able to plug your tops right into the full range outputs on the KW subs and rock the joint. Just set the switch on the HPR tops to high pass. Did the store tell you that it wouldn't work? If they did....I wonder why...could be they want to sell you something you don't need?

Best,

Paul

Paul,

Apparently the new processing in the K and KW series creates a slight delay in the sound, resulting in poor sound when mixed with speakers without the processing (HPR, etc). However, I've been hearing it might be ok to mix subs and tops (K/KW tops with HPR subs or HPR tops with K/KW subs). Just trying to confirm this.

You should have no issue with the HPR tops and KW181's. HPR tops & K or KW tops would not match up but with the subs you should have zero issues

I think someone isn't as up to snuff on the internal delay stuff. The HPRs have DSP processing as well and the difference between the 2 can't be more than a couple hundred microseconds (tenths of a millisecond). You really need to be above 1.5 ms or so (about a foot and a half distance difference) to hear it.

Small delay differences are more apparent when you are covering the same exact frequencies, such as having 2 different mics recording the same sound. Then you might need to compensate for such a small amount, but with a sub, you won't hear it at that level. It would be less of an issue than moving your subs a foot further from the tops.

Thanks for all the advice. Here's the response from QSC forums..
You can. The KW181 will have a 2 ms latency that's not present in the HPR122i, though. That difference is not really significant at a crossover frequency of 100 Hz. But you might consider positioning the subwoofer up to about 2 feet forward of the HPRs, if you can, to see if that makes a difference.

This being more than 1.5 ms delay, would simply moving the subs 2 feet forward like suggested work?

Wow, sorry .. that's a lot of internal latency and I did not expect that (that's like tape delay levels). I read previously the HPR had a DSP, but that appears not to be the case. FWIW, I would delay the tops with a driverack or similar .. otherwise you lose the utility of the pole mount.
