What is midfield? A band?

In layman's terms, it's the distance from the monitor -- that's simplifying it though.

I use near field monitors on my desk -- I find they give an accurate representation for most things MP3. Many studios will use mid field monitors, because it give a more accurate representation, depending on who the prospective audience is.

If I was recording something for audiophiles using high end equipment, I would probably use mid field monitors, at a distance that would be like a typical listening room. If I was recording something that people would likely play on MP3 players or car stereos, I would use near field.

Most decent studios use both, and it's up to the engineer to decide. He'll probably do both to hear the difference, then based upon said audience and perceived loudness, will decide which to use for the final mixdown.
