How do you get "up" for an event?

I am sure we have all been there, you have an event and you just don't feel into it. You try jamming your favorite tunes on the way, crank the earbuds while ya set up, but nothing seems to work. Red bull can make you cranky sometimes. I spoke to my doctor about it and he suggested I work out or run before an event. Tried it it did help somewhat but I think it is more mental. He also suggested rasberry Ketone and white kidney bean extract. I took these and yeah they do help you get stuff done! But, short of illegal drugs or drinking, What gets you in the mood to party if your just not feel'n it?

I think having a great attitude for everything I do is important. Even things I don't like to do. I truly enjoy doing weddings. Sure, I wish they were Monday through friday 9 to 5, but hey, I can't have everything.

For me, reading books, and getting prepared and knowing I've thought of everything and planned for the unexpected gets me excited about an event. Excited that I have the ability to take the stress away from a couple and let them truly have a great day....and they pay me for that. More than anything else I do.

I've streamlined my equipment so set up and tear down is a breeze. Frankly, this used to be the most stressful part of the business. Now, it's nothing I concern myself with. I don't worry about stairs, elevators, or anything. Tomorrow's wedding, we are doing the ceremony outside and then the reception inside. Quick and easy set up for the ceremony...about 5 minutes...with an L1 Compact, and about 15 minutes inside.

The other thing that gets me "up" for an event is reminding myself that if I don't want to do this, there are plenty of other DJs that would gladly take this gig and do a fine job. Many will do it for less.
It's my job to be "up" for it. I've done events with splitting headaches, colds, sprained ankles, etc... Someone is paying me to be "up" for their event.

My father used to say, "If you don't like what you do, don't worry about it, they'll be glad to find someone else that does".

I felt like that at a few event's during my years but somehow I did the best I can to get through it. When this happened to me I took some time off and gave my event's to other DJs until the urge came back. Hope you get through it. You can always go to Hank's Lounge and he will relieve your stress! LOL.........

4 hours of schlepping and setting up generally gets me ready to roll!

You know...in a sick way...I feel the same! I really don't mind the big gigs these days. If you test/troubleshoot ahead of time it kind of puts your mind at rest. Then you get to sweat before you sweat again and again. It's a workout but the checks are even more fun to sweat about how I'm gonna spend em!

To me it seems it's attitude that makes the difference. Setting up and tearing down even if it's in your house takes some work but the results are worth it once you see everybody and yourself having fun.

Jack Daniels and Coke -- yeah I know you mentioned drinking, but screw you :)

If you want, try the 5 hour energy thing -- it works for sure, but I consider it evil. You'll come down hard after it, no matter what BS they say. Got me through a long drive down here, and some hard nights of debauchery ;)

I prefer an Ensure, and a shot of vodka (mixed, I call it a senior cocktail). It gives you an up similar to doing a line.

Ensure and Vodka? I'd call that "A Russian Mother-in-law". ;)

Some guys cant believe me on this

but I dont smoke, dont drink (maybe in 50 years like I did yes)
I dont take drugs for a high

I have a natural high and you cant bottle it

I see a lot of djs low, depressed, have sleep problems etc and some nights just dont want to dj

well if you had have seen me say 15years ago you would have said i was on drugs
some weekends I was working from a Friday morning and not getting to bed till Monday morning at about 2am

this is where I was working a record shop, hotel, club, back to record store, wedding, club, wedding, wedding then finally bed...

so do that for 2x years every weekend and see how long you last!
I only stopped because the store closed, i started doing more computer repairs/work
then I bought the dj company I now own (Treble Clef Djs) and some of the clubs closed and
then I got sick of playing the same boring stuff all the time in some clubs

anyway have a nice day all

May sound wacky, but I think about a bad event. It seems to be motivate me to make the one coming up better. I start thinking of how I'll make it so and it gets my juices going.

Is that your version of "reverse psychology?"
I am just the opposite.
I feed off of the ego-boost from the last gig.
If the last gig was a bummer, I try to forget it altogether.

I save the booze, drugs, and other physical motivators for AFTER the gig.

I never needed boosters at all!

The folks that denounce it the most, are usually the worst offenders... ;)

I'm honest :)
