See what I mean! Again you display a profound sense of ignorance. My last response was to Jon, not you. Maybe I need to include some pictures since to seem to have such a difficult time reading and comprehending. You are trying to be the Court Jester but the people are laughing at you, not with you.

Canute its okay to have an opinion. I have an opinion that doesnt match your Mr Right thinking. I dont always agree with your comments just like the one or two times you didnt agree with mine. Just because you read tech magazines and specs doesnt mean you are the resident expert. I dont claim to be one for sure but I think you discredit most of us cause of your opinion which is simply yours and not the Bible. Sometimes your too easy. Oh and I often laugh at Rick cause I know him better than most possibly. Oh and I do love those boxes and I suspect you will fill the holes properly and they will sound as good as they look. I would find a fabric stretcher for the grill fabric but other than that I hope to see the results of this project.

Jon,
I have never claimed to be a “Resident expert”. I do have FORMAL training in Electronics, I have studied Electronic Instrument repair when I was in the US Army and worked in that Field for Industries, including The Johnson Space Center here in Houston working on the Consoles for Mission Control. That experience was shared here in sharing with you and others how to make a harness of cables in a rack.
I buy, read and learn things from Electronics, Sound Equipment Books etc so I can be better educated. You scoff at that…how do you think one learns? You and Rick make innuendos so that you can gain sympathizers for your comical causes. What I share here is a 34 year experience using Pro Sound with Live Sound Gear.

Those speakers I want to refurbish are in my Living room and have not been out on a Gig since 1978 when I started playing in Clubs and bought and used Pro Gear. I am refurbishing them for my own personal home use. I never used the Radio shack stuff at Gigs.

There are facts and then there are opinions but if you want to discredit everything I post as an opinion then that is YOUR prerogative. You know what they say about “Opinions”, like Azzholes, everyone has those. Sometimes the line between the two gets blurry. I have seen that being displayed here today. Taking a complete harmless thread and making it into an instrument of controversy. I came on here asking for input on Passive Crossovers, but you and Rick choose to, as usual, make fun of another innocent Post. Maybe at least I know how to build a speaker, much more than I can say for you two, who only know how to build dissention.

But Canute you only ASSuMe I or anyone else likely have less electronic skills or knowledge than you and thats where it becomes comical. Thats where you talk down to folks who may know something about the topic as well. I dont have to mention where my training came from to feel like Im somebody. Im fine within my own self knowing and I also know when Im out of my league. Im ok when Im wrong but if I know I will stand toe to toe. Probably the Dutch in me since I have no connection to Missouri or Texas. I praised the cabinets a couple times and encouraged you to complete the refurb. Didnt bad mouth anything about that asides getting a fabric stretcher for the grill material as it matches well with the cabinet and may be hard to find a rich looking replacement. The only issue I have is your attempt to tell everyone your method of providing gear is your choice just as I have built mine unique and much different but it sells cause it is also unique. Doesnt mean I couldnt gain the same rate using my EV SXA 100s as it isnt really about the bells and whistles. I have proof in my years that the gear matters minimally when it comes to sales and or success in this business. I typically thank you for many of your offerings cause you do know alot with yrs of experience but just because you do or think one way it doesnt mean your the only right answer. Knowing Rick as I do may allow me to realize he is good at playing a part here and perhaps he is someone other than that guy you paint him as. When you have went high order with being the RIGHT answer and having the man of all knowledge its too easy not to poke at the pedestal thats painted boldly below your feet. Dont sweat the small stuff . Share what you know without talking down you may be talking at someone elses shoes.

Some of the things I do share has been written and proven in books, teachings etc long before me, so they are NOT MY opinion. They are facts! Some facts are inherent. Me saying that putting two 8 ohm speakers in Series will give you a total of approx 16 ohms is not an opinion, it is a fact. You say what you do here, to and about me, so that others can buy into that type of discredit. Then you send me a PM complimenting me on my Speakers, to me that is hypocritical! I call things as I see them and yes, I am calling you out.

This whole thread is a disgrace to this board. I see now that I may have to put a couple more names on my Ignore List.

LOL Canute I complimented you on them here as well. Are They Cherry Finish? Oh and sorry pal you cant put me on ignore Im that big old pimple that no makeup can cover but I will respect your sensitivity but consider that when you tell me I havent a clue about a topic since you havent a clue to my training or life experience. Who knows perhaps I could trump the reading I do compared to your reading and possibly even the Johnson Space Center and Nasa.

Total Case of Babblin'! This must be written in code! Intelligence is two doors down ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~>

OK Time OUT! Lets stop this nonsense.

I'm having a hard time grasping why you would want to re-use ANY of those parts, or woofers.
Christ there as OLD as I AM...there have been leaps and bounds made in the design of better components for use in sound equipment...You yourself said that the UTAH isn't made anymore

So referbing a cabinet around something like that makes absolutely no sense to me at all..
And one can use HDF for the baffle on those...I built many sub boxes from HDF i special ordered from the local lumber yard...It works rather well like was said before

A lot depends on the driver construction .. some older parts still sound fine. I know my Mission Argonauts from 25 years ago still sound the same as they did when I bought them (sweet that is). Woofers haven't changed a whole lot in the years, except for the newer high excursion and dual voice coil types. The mids I would probably replace and definitely the highs.

This is presently in my home, in my living room. This is being refurbished for my home. Just because some speakers are older does not mean they are no longer good. Some older speakers outlast some of the newer ones so that alone speaks volumes about their quality. The magnet on those speakers are MASSIVE, they can't even fit inside my JBL scoops.
The Cabinets alone are worth a lot of money. It was made from exotic imported wood.
Lastly, they hold sentimental value for me. Those cabinets were built in the Virgin Islands, traveled to Trinidad in the Caribbean, to Boston and also to Montreal Canada. The drill I used back in that day was a hand drill, not electric and the saw was a regular hand saw not an electric saw. The varnish is a very hard shellac completely waterproof. The cabinets itself does not need refurbishing only the front baffles when I change out the drivers design.
It is a Home Project. That Cabinet sounded a whole lot better than some of those manufactured ones out in the market.

Its only natural to keep the same drivers etc in the box due to the sentimental value besides Canute has the processors to enhance them even if they are worn and have issues. :tricool: Ya Dig?

you gotta let those babies play the way they were intended to play
I was the one who designed and made them.;) The only question would be, "Do I want to preserve it as it is for archival purposes" This was my first system. Speakers were built by me and Pre amp and Amp were also built by me.

I would make sure to remount the woofers rotated 180 degrees in an attempt to keep the voice coils centered in the gap. They will definitely sag and ya can't put a brassiere on them. o_O
Good idea! Thanks for the tip.!

even more reason to not change them...just refurbish them to their original state
