There are lots of facilities that don't have the power needed for these high power amps - unless you're into plugging into their panels (and even then it's pretty tricky).

Well, if this is a system for school events....
I haven't seen a gymnasium yet that has proper power for anything more than a couple of standard outlets can handle
This is why I am very glad I started this thread.

Hopefully we can all learn from each other on what is/will be needed for doing larger shows in places with little power. I always walk through everything with my clients and even send an event rider to them after we come to an agreement on everything.

Big Shows require big power...Its the bottom line. If the client, venue, school wants your show, They will have an electrician wire you in, or make you a couple of drops to power you up correctly..

If it was a good client that i wanted to keep..(big school or something) I'd pay to have my needs met...It would make my show that much better!

Oh yeah...and by the way boys...Those (4) Lab Gruppens alone are outta the budget of this thread! LOL

Not really the same league .. a closer match to the SRX722 is the EV QRX 212/75 .. both really nice cabinets. The Tour X is also nice .. just not at the same level as the other 2.

I answered my own question. Now we are at a crossroads between the EV TX2152s or the JBL SRX722s.

Why the 722's? Hard to move, hard to raise and no real advantage in the dual 12's. Go listen to the SRX715's, and consider a pair of SRX718S woofers. Now you can throw the 715's on tripods and raise them, and place the pair of 718S Where they will sound the best. This will get you through any small gig with 715's alone and mid size functions when you add the 718s woofers.

I have no experience with the EV's you mention, however lots of experience with the JBL's. Most likely you won't go wrong either way.

Keep in mind the power requirements of the SRX series. Do it right once and be very, VERY happy. Lots of nice used deals on I-Tech or Macro Tech Crown lightweights that'll make 'em sing. How would I know?........been there and done that.

Folks have recommended the orbit shifters and others from JTR.....also a good move, be sure you have help to move 'em and a big van/truck. I have 2 pair of SR4719X JBL dual 18's......they sound great however tough to move alone, though I have done it.

Best,

Paul

I've heard both the 715 and 722 and I would pick the 722 for most purposes, assuming it's used with a sub, without one, the 715 has a slight advantage in the low end. The 722 is an overall smoother box and gets louder. Probably not the optimal choice for a DJ (the 712 or 715 is a better fit), but for live sound, it will go head to head with most anything.

Agreed. Why screw around with the dual 12's though, if you are going to step up the line, go for the 3 way. Amazing difference in midrange clarity and vocals. I have 3 pair of various SRX 3 ways of different vintage, and LOVE to use them. Once again, the load in/out comes into play......however a huge difference over a 2 way box.

Granted, the 722's are good, I heard them too when I bought my 715's. I already had the 3 ways in my inventory, so the 722's made no sense for me. If I were bleeding cash today and knowing the line has been discontinued, I'd be taking a hard look at the SRX738, however I would prefer a 15" woofer over the 18" used. I'll stack a pair of SR4735X on my pair of single SR-4718X woofers, drive 'em with crowns. Only 4 pieces, loud, clean and punchy. The 15" driver makes for better integration with the woofers. I also have a pair of SR4732X. These are a dual 12 with horn mid and tweeter. Integration is good with these, however you need to watch out for the diaphragms on the baby cheeks tweeters, and they need careful EQ to sound their best. I like them a lot, however if I have my druthers, I'll pull the 4735's first.

This is a great thread.....wonderful informed opinions, I wonder what the original poster will end up with! :)

Best,

Paul

Anyone heard the QSC KW153s?

I have a pair of HPR153i's. Along with a pair of HPR181i subs, this setup rocks. The 153i's also work quite well alone if need be. "Apples and Oranges" in comparison with the passive stuff. IMHO, when you really want to hit it, passive is still the way to go.

Best,

Paul

Paul, this is for big sound only for our bigger homecoming shows next school year. We plan to have 4 of the 722s, and 3 of the 728s. If I had the chance of hearing the JTRs I would, but then again my friend wants to be able to rent out the equipment so brand recognition is essential.

As for a smaller setup we already have that covered. Only need big sound;). For now it is looking like we will get the 722s and 728s. QSC PLX3602 for bottoms and PLX3102s for the tops or Crown Xti2 4002s.

You will have a very nice setup .. looking at lots of amps :triwink:

Thanks for your insight. I see where you are going with this. My only suggestion now is go with Crowns..... I-Techs or Macro-Techs. What you are running will thank you long-term. The Xti series is not your best choice for these, nor are the PLX. If you are hot for QSC, get Powerlights. Keep the whole system on the same level. Many will not agree, however I'll stand by the amp recommendations I made.

Best to ya!

Paul

I got your back on this one USDJ... I have 3602's and after using my Powerlights on the same subs, The difference is quite amazing. If i was running 728's i'd be looking for a Used I-Tech 8000 to power them. End of story

I have an I-Tech 8000 for my SR4719X dual 18's. It's a keeper.

I love my 3602 (or even the 3102 bridged) .. it seems to have enough power and, more importantly, don't need an electrician to use it.

You dont need an electrician to use the I-Tech either...It will run on wall power just fine. As long as your not running a 2 ohm load on it and pushing hard
