Qsc or Ev speakers?

remember when comparing QSC boxes to others, to compare the real world power classes and gain structures. The real world power amp rating in the QSC is 350W, not 1000W. The reason why they do not publish all of the driver specs is that everyone has access to "Ohms Law" . BTW, I sell them, they are great boxes, but I do not blow smoke to get a sale. My customers appreciate honest practicality.

The EV seems to be a great bang for the buck ... I'm only looking at the JBL due to my live sound work .. they are more in demand for rental, etc. because of the name.
 
I don't know about hype but I use qsc hpr122i's with the EV live x 18's and have had nothing but good said about that setup. I say stick to the wood cabinets. No plastic.And just say no to rat fur.
 
While a black Duratex or similar covering looks nicer, the "rat fur" wears better for a piece that sees live sound use, especially as floor monitors. People tend to slide them into place or move them and the carpeting holds up better. As to wood vs plastic, yes, wood enclosures "tend" to sound better, but that is a generality, there are many plastic enclosures (the K12 for instance), that sound better than many a wood box.

Yes, but the job of a speaker isn't to create music, it's to reproduce it, so as long as the plastic isn't resonating or somehow coloring the sound, it really doesn't matter.
 
I use EV's ZX5's for mains and they sound great with tons of bottom. Made out of plastic. Wood does in my opinion have a warmer tone but I took the compromise because of the weight and the great components offered inside the zx5. I do run wood subs though. tx2181's and mach ms218t's Plastic sub cabinets just flex too much under pressure in my opinion. :)
 
I prefer wood to plastic too - but I agree that done right, plastic cabs can sound good too. I've run my K12's (plastic) up against my EV 12's (wood) and IMO, the wood does sound better. I also think these particular speakers are a fair comparison for each other.
 
But I don't think it's the plastic that makes the difference. Unfortunately, I am not aware of a vendor that makes the same components in two different cabs, so it's tough to compare. Each has it's place and as long as it's done right, there shouldn't be much difference.
 
We generally do give WAY more than anyone asks for ...
 
If I had to go with QSC I would choose this combo. I have heard it before and it is good.

I've heard it too (with 1 upper cab), but you're looking at almost $4K per side. Nice though.

You would be surprised how easy it is. Each piece locks into place. The pole is threaded so there won't be any tilt.
 
Not picking on you or anyone in particular, but this brings up a point that people seem to miss. But comments like "weren't warm enough" mean nothing. Compared to what? Was there an A-B with both speakers in the same location plating the same music? If not, you can't compare any speaker to any other speaker. Room acoustics, lack of or improper use of an EQ, incorrect gain settings, use of subs, incorrect crossover settings, quality source material and too many other factors to list come into play. If yahoo DJ #1 has the best sound system in the world but doesn't know how to use it, it will probably sound like crap. Give a person who takes the time to study & understand how systems work a mediocre system (with enough controls to manipulate it) and they can make it sound pretty good.
 
I heard them in QSC's demo room. Compared to vrx boxes which I have owned and demoed in the same situations. I would go with qsc put their best foot forward in the demo room using all the correctly spec'd settings for their own gear. I just happen to have not like them for my applications. I think they would be great for foh spoken words. And yes given some more processing I am sure that they would sound better. At a demo room at the dj expo they just crank up the crap mp3 and try to blow your head off. Loud doesn't mean quality. Not so sure y my opinion is so debatable.
