This is what happens when one tries to be a Jack of all Trades. I don't see how some can do it..DJ, Lighting, Uplighting, Photography, Videography and Lord know what else. I can see DJ and Lighting together but the other stuff is like wearing too many hats. Clients won't really take you too seriously.

yeah, the NERVE of some DJ's who try to do LIGHTING as well!
:triwink:

One thing I've learned in all my years of dealing with DJ's...

Many will try to sell you anything they can, at the cost of the music (which is their job).

You either care about what you do, and give it your best -- or you try to make a buck, just for a buck's sake...

I see one routinely in my area who drives an old pickup truck and advertises (on the side in handwritten paint) that he will "trade DJ services for scrap metal".

I also have a "new" DJ in the area who advertises "over 40 years combined experience", uses orange and yellow extension cords, uses a milk crate as a riser for the her dual deck CD player, and some type of home stereo speakers.

If they're getting business, then I wish them well.

Tell Bob Carpenter that and he will be laughing all the way to the bank. While you'll still be trying to decide if you have made enough money from your last gig to go near the bank. Lol! Him and his wife do everything you just mentioned. He had a client willing to pay him $9,000.00. He's my DJ hero!

Lighting, uplighting, videography, DJ, All of them take just a bit of artistic talent...... Not rocket science.... If you have the time and skill set.... More power to you !!!

I do lighting, up lighting, dj, and live sound....no problem love all of it.

I have been doing this for over 30 years and I make a very good living from it. As many on here know, I am not your typical DJ. I operate a FOH Rig. I recently started doing some lighting and personally find it a pain in the arse. It is more time consuming than the Sound itself. Everything else I do, Sound Rentals is directly Sound related. I used to subcontract the lighting to a buddy of mine. I agree there is money in Lighting and other things. Hell, just before Christmas I added over $2,000.00 in lighting and have made that investment back and more by the end of the Holiday Season

To me when one has to do all these other non DJ services it is may be due to inadequacies in the DJ area itself. Another thing is, those folks should not complain if Florists, Hotels etc start offering DJ services on the cheap. Some already think we are not worth much anyway.

Before you put the other foot in your mouth, I suggest you learn of who you 'dis. Carpenter gets (not once in a blue moon) but gets regularily...2500+ just for dj services; with photo/video, photobooth....10K+....He runs high end moving heads, 30 + battery operated, wireless uplight...he's probably got 20 grand in lights....by the way his wife is a well regarded photographer.....

Give us a list of you 2K investment in lighting; I know about the $50 laser and a revo 4; give us the rest.

There are no inadequecies; wait a minute; you now runs lights...feeling inadequete about your dj'ing abilities.

If you make such a good living, why the need for 2 other occupations...bored?

C'mon folks .. it's Sunday ..

Just because a few DJ's have trouble multi tasking.....doesn't mean all of us do......

It is very possible to DJ and do lights and a few other things and do them well.....

None of it's rocket science......

To say another DJ can't do those things because you have trouble doing these things is very very very narrow minded.

I can DJ and chew gum at the same time.

J<BJK afnhf' ;alsfnmv.kn n'aknf f'.asfn.,n b avn.admflmsdgfmg

sorry, I was trying to chew gum and TYPE at the same time.

I also have several "talents" that I get paid for...
but the only two I do at the same time are DJ and LIGHTING
(and thats casue all my lights are on SOUND ACTIVE mode)

God bless ya if you can pull it off...
but if I was doing a gig where I was hired for DJ, lights, up-lighting, photobooth, and photography...
I'd go nuts
cause you KNOW there'd be a problem with ONE of them that I had to solve while trying to DJ.
(yeah, I know, you hire other people to work it for you....but in the end, only ONE person is responsible....YOU)
