You are putting the cart in front of the horse. In other words, you are trying to make the job fit the tools instead of trying to get the right tools for the job.
If you are trying to go cheap try using 4 B52s Folded Horns. I heard them last night with double 15s and horns as tops and they sounded decent. Band and DJ were playing through them.

The B52 folded horn subs are going to be your best bang for the buck if you are looking for lots of bass with out a huge amount of coin.
I have used the CV Earthquakes many years ago and 6 of them could make it hard to breath when you are in the sweet spot of the array.
Only reason I did not like them is that they are heavy as hell. If you have elevators and flat hard ground they are easy to move, add in stairs, lots of carpet, etc etc and look for another person to help move them or a lighter speaker.

The B52's are nice in that for every powered one you get you can get a passive and power it off the powered unit as its built in amp can handle the ohm load.
So for around $3000 or so you can have 4 folded horn subs. They are a bit heavy but a great punch for the buck

Lets just say DRZINC, myself and my partners company are going to blow the doors off a banquet hall filled with 900 HS students at a semi formal later this month stay tuned. CV Earthquakes X 4 will be bumpin courtesy of DRZ.

What kind of event? Bunch of old people? Teens?
If you expect all 500 on the dance floor then no, 2 subs wont cut it especially with a younger crowd.
50th Wedding anniversay with like aged people as guests in the late 60s, then 2 is barely adequate but you might get away with it.

500 people at a speaking convention. Raise your tops higher.

I would add that it depends on the music you are playing and what you have for tops. If it's 1960's rock, indoors, you have decent sized powerful mains handling everything down to 80 or 90Hz (the only thing the subs reproduce is the 60Hz kick drum primary resonance) and the room layout allows you to cluster & boundary load the subs, then 2x single 18's might be OK. If all of those parameters don't line up with your plans you want at least 2x decent horn subs or 2x decent dual 18 front loaded subs indoors. If outdoors, double that.

Ah, the old argument....how much bass is enough. To answer your first questions, i would stay away from those M-Audio Subs. The best bang for your buck would probably be http://www.midweststereo.com/B-52-Active-Subwoofer-p/B-52-ACT-18XV2.htm and One of these to go along with it http://www.midweststereo.com/B-52-Passive-Subwoofers-p/B-52-ACT-18XSV2.htm. I started out with a pair of these subs many years ago and i still recommend them as the best bang for your buck. The passive sub can be powered off of the amp in the active sub so it makes for a great combination. Ideally for a gig the size you described playing heavy dance music you do want a pair of dual 18's, OR 4 single 18's. BUT, you can get by just fine by placing your subwoofers wisely. If you spread your subs then you probably will not have enough bass. Cluster your subs together either in the center, OR against a wall/in a corner depending on where you're setting up and the acoustics of the room. Using the subs this way will greatly increase the performance you can get from just 2 boxes and i think you'll be happy. I say if that's your budget then buy these 2 and Rock your gig.

This is what I had in mind for him if he is on a budget. He will need an amp though. http://www.midweststereo.com/B-52-Subwoofer-p/b-52-lx-18v3.htm

I have 4 CV's each pair is powered by a bridged QSC PLX2 3602. And they will shake the dust out of every nook and cranny in a building.

PS. I'm not talking sheet rock walls. I'm talking concrete and thick brick walls.

You are not lying. The 6 I had were amazing even outdoors. Now if I only had a truck with lift gate to move them around I would buy them again. I miss being in my 20's and not caring about having to move around cabinets that were 120lbs
