We see articles all the time about techniques, various methods, exotic hardware, and crazy setups. What we see even more is the often hilarious fighting that goes on between purists and controller freaks.

Where does it always seem to land on?




The "Sync" Button.


I've never seen more DJs getting hopping mad about a topic.

Personally I believe in both the techniques of harmonic mixing and beat-matching, but also that the Sync button can be an invaluable tool if the software you are running implements it well.

I see a lot of the same arguments in the electronic music field as well, concerning certain synths and programs. Whats wrong with making creation easier if you respect the strides it took to get there?

What do you folks think?

Until you can recreate the human brain, its sensory input and processing speed -- it's simply another button, on another gear toy, that doesn't even come close to doing anything worthwhile -- unless you completely suck at DJ'ing...


BTW, I have a DJ Hero thing for an XBox, that I got free with some order. Never even opened the box, if anybody wants to buy it...

The Real Test

New Technology is great but the real test comes from if one can accomplish the same results without technology. There are still things that can be done the creative way that the controller, software cannot do.

I don't beatmix/harmonic mix manually or with software. I have never ever had anyone complain or even ask me about it. I can keep the party going strong with quality programming and a little interaction with the guests. Of course, I don't DJ in clubs either.

On our end, being in a big college town, a little beat matching knowledge doesn't hurt in the least. Our stance on it is any monkey can press a button, but it takes actual skill to mix for real (not using programs to do it).

Pretty simple, the software makes moving stuff easier, however beat matching for me means I do it by ear with the controller, external mixer and my headphones. I've never used the Sync button and find no need for it. It's just general perception and lack of understanding about how things work.

I do it by ear too. I don't use the visuals. It's all in the hearing.

This is the reason I use two and four pairs of outputs from my external sound card going to my external mixer. When I am doing Live Club Mixes I mix manually as I often do not play the whole song.
At certain functions I may use auto play with sync sometimes. Traktor does an excellent job of auto mixing even without Sync deployed. So too does my Pioneer MEP 7000
I view this new technology as aids but it certainly does not replace my manual skills.
