I thought I'd post a little bit of our 2011 school/college promotional blitz that is getting underway. As we get more and more materials finished and I have time to upload them, I'll be happy to share them with the masses.

Additionally, I'm more than happy to answer any questions that any of you have about the way we do school dances, market them, and produce them. Everyone has a different way of doing things, and this is ours:

It would help your credibility if you recorded some "live" interviews during or immediately at the end of the show, asking the guest questions like "What did you like the most about the event". Second and Third Party acknowledgments are worth their weight in gold.

All part of a grander plan. For now I tried to incorporate the testimonials into the beginning of the video. As we work with more schools this year, I'll begin trying to shoot more footage of testimonials. I'm not personally a fan of soliciting testimonials from kids/clients but rather prefer when they come on their own, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to get the shot.
 
check with Arnoldo he is the industry leader and heads above anyone in the industry. He surely could give critique and share unheard of technique the rest of us havent discovered. Kudos to yet further progress in your business growth over the years Ry.
 
Arnoldo and I have had discussions about schools prior to his decision to create his school series of webinars. I can't cite him for feeling that its a good idea to turn his experience into cash, but I also believe that these forums are supposed to be a great resource of free information.

As such, Arnoldo and I haven't had too many discussions about schools lately, and I just kinda mind my own business when it comes to his market. Arnoldo is great at what he does, and I applaud his work and innovation.

Other places Arnoldo catches some crap for being so forward with his school techniques when in reality there are many ways to be successful and it depends on your unique market. Some things would work in my market, and others not so much.

For me, I take everyone's advice and criticism equally because there's something I can learn from every DJ, be them a world renowned artist, or a small town single op.
 
Ryan, Nice job on the video, how is the flyer coming along? I always meant to do a promo video, and just never got around to it. I'd agree with ahoustondj that some 3rd party video testimonials from after the event would give you some added punch.

My one complaint would be that there is a lot of the same type of shots in the video, and it gets old. I found myself fastfowarding after the first minute or so.

Steve - Good luck with the mail out this year, you're hitting it at just the right time, but I'd do another mailout in December and February to catch the groups that drag their heels. Here's a PDF of my most recent Prom Flyer, designed originally in 2005, I used this yearly with only minor tweaks until retiring in 2010. I think I paid $600 to have it printed, and must have made $300-400K from it. The first booking I got from it was for a $14,000 event.

It was very simple, minimalistic. The idea was that instead of overwhelming them with all the typical DJ hype, we'd go simple, with lots of blank space. It was probably a bit more "mature" than the typical DJ flyer catered to teens, but it was a hit. Both Teens and parents loved it.

It was printed as a booklet, 8 pages (think 2 sheets 17.5"x 5.5") with a final size of 8.5" x 5.5". Back then I think we paid $600-700 for 1000 to be printed. In the end I think we printed 5000 of them in total, as we mailed out about 1000 per year.
