I had a problem Saturday. First off I don't blame OTS at all I'm pretty sure my problem was caused by my raid 5 setup which is 4TB (4 drives 1TB each). My normal way of starting my new system is after everything is up and running. I start my Raid 5 system it normally freezes the mouse for about 5-10 seconds as the drive is getting recognized. Most of the time there is no problem (Esata) if I don't see the drive I just reboot and try again. On Saturday the drive started fine and everything I thought was good.

I then started OTS and tried to play a song. Nothing happened at all, the song loaded but would not start. I noticed the little OTS guy in the upper right hand corner that normally spins was whited out. I tried opening and closing the program and the same thing kept happening. I rebooted and it was the same thing. When I tryed it again I rebooted and I left the drive off and started OTS first, it played no problem any song that I had on the computer just. I then started the drive and it seemed to be ok at that point.

I have never had a problem with this system before and it runs video and everything I throw at it. So you can see why I think its this drive. The thing is I have used it like 5 times before and there was no issue at all. I don't believe I was using up all my resources on my system. Any help finding out what happened would be great. I do have an extra drive and computer there so I could switch them out. All of this stuff happened 2 hours before the event so it caused no problems other than adding stress to my day.

Did you hit any large potholes? Where connections might have jarred loose?
 
I haven't played with OTS in some time now Dave, but my guess is that it was having an issue reading/streaming from that drive. The array may have found some issues, and needed to do some maintenance work.

RAID arrays can get ugly when they find a problem -- they don't give a hoot what yer doing, they will just go ahead and try and fix the problem -- which will make access to them almost impossible, until they finish their task. They will block most attempts to communicate, in order to preserve integrity of the data.


Just a basic pointer though -- when using an external drive or array, always open up Windows Explorer prior to opening your DJ software. Browse through a folder, and make sure Windows has good communication to that drive.
 
Thanks guys, I was really hoping you would chime in Rick. The cords were inserted well. One of the first things that I thought of. I know that the system operated fine after a couple of tries. I know the last time I tried I opened up my DJ software and then turned on the drive. It worked fine at that point. Rick is there any thing I can do to make that not and issue anymore. And as far as potholes who knows when driving to an event.

Not really -- that's the way RAID works. It will attempt to preserve the integrity of it's data, and do any housekeeping needed, before it lets you access said data...

Yer sort of at the mercy of the beast you created. My arrays will sometimes lock me out for hours if they find a problem, and have to rebuild data across multiple drives...
 
How long has the current version of Windows been installed on the machine?
 
That might be part of the problem Dave. When Windows get's soggy it does funny things.

I had a problem with Mixmeister a couple of years ago. (I thought I posted about it but I can't seem to find it). I would try to open it and it would shut itself back down. Of course it was the one night I didn't load the backup so I ended up playing the first hour with WMP and Winamp. Turned out I reinstalled Windows and the problem went away.

Even if it's not a problem right now it will become one eventually you should really reinstall every year or so (more if you use it outside performance) just to be on the safe side
 
I don't know that updating would help a whole lot most of the updates are internet related (I am assuming you are either running Vista or more likley XP with SP2) and would have very little if anything to do with the performance of your machine.

Personally I would start by reinstalling

You shouldn't need to reinstall Vista or Win 7 ever, unless you totally hosed the OS up with a virus or something, which doesn't sound like the case here...
 
Dave, is the laptop just a gig machine or do you access the internet with it?
 
? ,, when i start my machine at gigs, i plug drive in, and start up everything together , seems to work fine, is this what I should be doing, and another ? I use 2 of the 500 gig passports for gigs, usb powered, should i go to a powered one, I had used powered before, thanks
 
I run a 500 gig usb powered external hard drive (seagate) and it (up to this point) has worked awesome. I have a 1 TB powered ext. hard for backup. I also have the specialty dance songs ona flash drive.
