Decent Mac Image Editor?

Does anyone have a suggestion for a decent freeware or open source image editor for OS X? I need to do a bit more advanced stuff than Preview can handle. GIMP works like crap under OS X. Bonus points if it will work with PSDs.

So far I've been firing up a Xubuntu virtual machine to use GIMP but it due to only having 2GB of RAM on this machine is slows everything to a crawl.
