Is multi-channel assignable outputs possible w/ generic surround cards?

Real multi sound cards like ESI appear as seperate channels in most software - and can be made as default. For example... make 3/4 the default audio device and windows will happily send sounds it's way.

But for basic USB and the internal HD surround, that is not an option. Yes, ASIO4ALL will allow software 'see' those ports.

Is there some way either via registry hack or utility to allow windows to make default playback device on a surround output - 7/8 for example?

We can assume that all these outputs are fully functioning under WDM and can be seen by surround capable software.

Thanks!

Depends on the drivers Ed...

If the device has WASAPI drivers, Vista and Win 7 can see all the endpoints (channels) on the device. Most low end devices do not come with those drivers, because they are very expensive to write, as it's a complicated API.

If you can't see the channels listed separately in Control Panel->Sounds, then Windows cannot enumerate the endpoints, because the drivers aren't capable of it.

Kinda figured as much. Maybe something like FFDSHOW can help?

Probably not...

Every time I've put that thing on my computer, I have to go back to a restore point, because it hoses my Codecs up :sqerr:
