Rick,

Your assessment of ADJA is simply inaccurate. I can't speak for Mobile Beat, but we have chapters & members in almost every major urban city in the top 50 cities. Here is just a small list. 3 in LA / so cal, Tampa, Miami, Phx, SLC, Chicago, Denver, Dallas, Houston, San Jose, San Diego, Sacramento, Tucson, hartford, Conn, greater Boston area, Charlotte, DC, Pittsburgh, Detroit. With over 15 new local chapters forming presently in other cities of the top 50. We have chapters in 8 of the top 11 markets. I think this qualifies that we are hardly rural focused.

In the cities we don't have chapters in or forming we have members. So no, we are not cornfield focused. 50 largest cities The ONLY Major urban market we haven't been able to crack is NYC. We are working on that, but it takes time & locals that want it to be there. Simply a storefront and a lot of coin will not make it happen.

Just to set the record straight: The cornfield thing was meant as humor, don't take it for more than what it was meant (and I will still use that line)... ;)

But, back to the issue -- what are your numbers in those big metro areas?

I'll cut right to the chase -- I have hundreds of times more customers, than you folks have members -- no BS there. Why? Because I find out what they want, and then give it to them. I speak with so many DJs on the phone in a given week, that I can't even comprehend the numbers.

I'm fairly good at shooting the sh_t, and ask all sorts of questions while doing routine support calls. Some of the questions I usually ask, are:

"Do you belong to a DJ org?"

"Do you hang out at DJ chat boards?"

Then I take the time to listen to them :)

You know where to find me, if you want to talk -- but the point of my post, is that I think you are missing a large majority of the folks you want/can recruit. Sending a bus around once or twice a year, is not gonna get you those people, nor grow the industry into a real one. It may make a few of the speakers some coin, but it does nothing for the fledgling DJ industry...

I knew you were joking but...

hundreds of times more? Really? So You've sold a nearly a half Million copies of Rockit? just basing that on "hundreds of times" meaning atleast 200x. they way I rough that out at $50 a copy you have grossed over $20M! Awesome for you. That is great! You should well be retired & have sold the company by now for millions & moved to your own island in the south pacific where you can be king. instead of wasting time on a chat board...... I have no delusions of a tour changing or shaping or growing an industry.

We have varied numbers in those markets, made up of those that want be involved. Our local chapters do alot to invite others to join. You can lead a horse to water............ I too talk to large numbers of DJs every day. Probably as many as you or more. I am on the phone pretty much constantly for 12-14 hours every day. I couldn't talk to more if I wanted to.

PS I will give ya a shout one of these days when the phone stops ringing for 5 min!. talk to you soon.

The tour actually has introduced the national DJ industry to a lot of people who never knew one existed--so yes it has grown our industry.

People from Wichita, KS and upstate New York and Houston, TX (just to name a few) who had never heard of Mobile Beat, Rockit software, or the ADJA before they attended a free event now can get professional software, health and business insurance and networking from an association, and the Mobile DJ industry's leading publication now--and before they never knew all of that existed or where to look for it.

Jake,

That isn't accurate. Most of the Tour cities with ADJA chapters DID already know about ADJA, & many things in our industry including Mobile Beat, because we told them. Besides that The Tour has helped & is helping the industry to advance. don't feel so defensive. We both know the contributions of ADJA & Mobile Beat to advancing the industry. Don't get rattled. We will continue together to help DJs to build & Grow Their Business!

You'd be surprised at my numbers. :)

You'd also be surprised at my expenses, and profit margin -- so, no island buying anytime soon... ;)

Maybe someday, but I never really expected to get rich in this niche business. It pays the bills, and I enjoy it for the most part -- simple as that :)

Does a DJ industry really exist? Or, is it just folks that sell to the DJs, that make up the "industry"?

I make no qualms about it -- I sell to DJs. Anybody that knows me (especially the folks here) -- know I shoot straight from the hip. I'm also here every single day, of every single year -- to answer questions, and shoot the sh_t too.

Where are you folks, except when a tour or show is coming up, and it needs to be promoted...? ;)

Rick,

Your right, an industry doesnt really exist because the majority of it's participants still don't or can't earn a living at it. When that happens we will really have an industry. until then we are just working on it. We will keep working & pressing forward.
I am here, and a couple other places, but I choose not to spend all day online in forums. There are too many out there. I can't possibly be as involved in them as I would like to be & still get anything done and have a life. Sometimes I see a thread, think about jumping in, but decide not to because I probably cant see it through to the end. Now I only post when I thing I can offer something to it that hasnt been stated. Jake works hard, & also has a life outside of mobile beat.

The name of the tour is MOBILE Beat. The clientele are MOBILE disc jockeys. MOBILE disc jockeys travel to their events, hence the word MOBILE.
There is a MOBILE DJ Industry, and many of us earn our livings, full time, entertaining guests at banquets, weddings, sweet 16's, mitzvahs, block parties and whatever. Good industry associations need not be within a rock's throw from one's home. If the association offers great benefits and content for their members, the members, MOBILE DJ's, don't have a problem traveling to the association meeting/event.
DJ Times has one event annually --it's in Atlantic City New Jersey--and DJ's from all over the world travel to attend it. Why? Because it offers great networking opportunities, and great seminar content, and a chance to see the latest gear & equipment. I don't see anyone complaining about the location being too far away.

Mobile Beat Magazine also has a single LARGE event each year in the entertainment capital of then world, Las Vegas.
I don't hear any great uproar about its location being too far to travel to.

I cannot understand that people complain about a city or town in which a Mobile Beat Tour Stop event is not held in.
If you are truly interested in attending such an event, you will be willing to travel a bit to it!

I recall traveling to Torrington Connecticut to attend a Mobile Beat Summer Tour Stop, a three hour trip for me. It was well worth the trip!

Our NJDJN holds a monthly meeting here in New Jersey. Some of our members travel from as far as Pocono Pennsylvania, Boston Massachusetts, and Baltimore Md.
They do so because A) Our meetings provide great content & networking and B) They are MOBILE disc jockeys.

Last year, we, The NJDJN, invited and sponsored, the very first Mobile Beat Summer Tour Stop ever held in New Jersey. Because of our monthly meeting location, the MB stop was well attended and we are pleased to hear, will repeat again this August 3rd.

If the stops are to be successful, they must be well attended. Otherwise it is a wasted trip for the attendees. You need reasonable numbers of attendees to effect good networking opportunities.
Networking opportunities are the focal point for me, as it pertains to these events/meetings.

If you want a Mobile Beat Tour Stop in your home town, set he stage for success. Sponsor the stop and insure a great turnout for the stop.
Otherwise, live up to your MOBILE name, and drive to the nearest stop---possibly 2 hours away---you will not be disappointed.
The Mobile Beat Summer Tour Stops were highly successful last year, and with everyone's help and participation, will be again this year!

So, Philly has a chapter, now? They are #6. BTW, I have every intent on being at the Philly stop.

Chuck,

I didn't say that we did now. We had one in formation for a short time. we don't yet have one restarted, but will soon. We are working on it.

That is 100% accurate. As a matter of fact, people have come up to me at stops and said exactly "I never knew any of this existed for us DJs." Aside from the fantastic work of the ADJA chapters on Previous tours, we also directly invited people via phone calls, emails, and coordination with local stores.

Not getting rattled, just reaffirming fact.

No Jake it's not. You think that all the DJs in the towns you stated, each where we have strong local chapters, that they were totally oblivious to ADJA???? Really. Your imagination astounds me. I KNOW differently having visited & spoken to more in those markets than the tour produced & they all knew about ADJA & the industry. It might be true for markets where ADJA has not existed. You not reaffirming any FACTS except those which your creating....

I agree, but I'm not sure we agree on the reasons Drax...

I think those that WANT to earn a living off it, are earning a living off it -- but that is a small percentage in my experience.

Let's put an arbitrary figure out there, say 100,000 DJ's in the US.

I'm gonna make up a statistic here, based upon my experience, that 90,000 of them are in it for a few extra spending bucks, chicks, and free beer!

Those 90,000, don't want to belong to an organization. It's nice, easy, under the table cash flow. If they join an organization, they are then potentially on somebodies radar... ;)

I've found three scenarios take precedent:

a) They have no clue what the ADJA is, or MB.

b) They can't stand it, because they feel it's an old boys club after attending a meeting.

c) They don't want to hear somebody lecture how to do or sell something -- they want you to help them get more gigs.

Just my thoughts, but I think when you can help them get more gigs, you folks might actually get more people to join. That's why I suggested setting up a brick and mortar, getting in with the local unions, etc. Go metro, make a splash, and then it will trickle down... ;)

I NEVER said ALL of the people. SOME of the people had never heard of the national industry.

I resent the fact of being essentially called a liar.

I gave you a chance to clarify & amend it.

Instead of restating your thought, you reply its 100%. That lots of people in Wichita & Houston had NEVER heard of ADJA. Sorry that is BS. So if that doesn't sit well with you then oh well. Your false statements don't sit well either. Both of those cities have & are well known in their markets. They are not nonexistent to DJs in their markets.

So let's compare facts, business partner. Our databases can confirm this. On the previous two tours, we gained 700 contacts we had previously not had.

YOU were not in Wichita. I was. YOU were only at three stops in 2009 and one stop in 2010. I am not diminishing the ADJA in the least bit--I am simply stating that there were people that came up to me and said they had never heard of the national industry before. I heard it. I was there. You are calling me a liar for conversations I have had with people that you were not there. And after that-- you have repeatedly discredited me in a public forum. I thought you were my friend. Cheers I guess.

Your right Jake, I wasn't there and as such, not a single soul told me anything about the stops. I never called you a liar, nor did I discredit you. Rather I called out your embellishments that were not accurate to what I heard from several others who were there.

Embellishments? I have not made any. We had over 1300 DJs in 2009. We had around 1500 in 2010. Those arent embellishments--those are facts.
I'm not embellishing anything.

I am not saying everyone was new or fell out of the womb last night-- I am saying in some places SOME people had never heard of the industry. Why is this hard to believe? Once again not embellishing anything.

Most of the stops did not get 100 people--yes, but some did. Some got way more. In fact the two best attended stops in 2010 were non-ADJA chapters. Once again not embellishing anything.

I know you have you sources, but releasing information about our tour as you have done in this thread in a forum we sponsor is inappropriate. Also, sarcasm is inappropriate as well, but hey you've got your own show to promote at our expense.

I am asking the mods to close this thread--it has worn our it's usefulness. I will post the specific times and locations and persenters when they are released.

We have worked with the ADJA on the past two tours, and yes MOST of the attendees were members.

Your right Jake, I wasn't there and as such, not a single soul told me anything about the stops. I never called you a liar, nor did I discredit you. Rather I called out your embellishments that were not accurate to what I heard from several others who were there.

Jake,

Grow up, whatever, I haven't promoted our show in this thread what so ever. Your sponsorship means that no other events can be discussed in this forum? If so that is a conflict and the forum should be renamed the mobile beat only forum.

I released no information that isn't or wasn't public knowledge.
