Went to an interesting party last night.

One of my buddies is a black guy. He turned 50 this past week. His wife threw him a 50th BD party. I would estimate that about 75% of the crowd was black, and 25% was white. There might have been 2 Indian folks as well.

Anyway, this was my first party that I ever attended with a predominantly black crowd and a black DJ. So I wanted to pay extra close attention to use this opportunity to learn. I didn't know what to expect musically. To be honest, I think I expected lots of old school and maybe some funk. And we got a LITTLE BIT of that.... maybe 6 songs between both genres.

Interesting things I noticed:

1. The DJ did not play a single slow song all night. Not one.

2. He had a decent amount of people dancing fairly often - to songs that I don't believe I have ever heard in my life.

3. Funny enough, the biggest dance floor filler all night was Cupid Shuffle.

4. The DJ did not play a single song other than the Cupid Shuffle that you might normally hear at a white person's wedding in my area, unless maybe you count "It Takes Scoop" or "Tear the Roof Off the Sucka."

All that said, I had a really good time, and overall I think the DJ did a nice job. I wish I could have asked him what some of the songs he was playing were so that I could have implemented a couple at my events.

Oh, one weird thing, I asked the guy - early on in the night - if he could play some Motown. He said he didn't have any! I don't know how that is even possible for a group of people who pretty much ranged from 35 - 65.... with most being in their 50's.

BTW, he had a pair or 12" powered QSC speakers.... I sure wish he had had a sub to go with them. They really needed some nice low end filler.

You should have asked him for a playlist. If you want to get the best of those songs especially the newer ones, check out the Billborad Charts (Urban, Hip Hop and Rap)
Promo Only also has Top Hits in these Genres. Check the Top Tens from the Urban Radio Stations in your area.
 
its always good to have diversity in most things Papa.different foods go with different music too,LOL.
 
But more importantly, how far spread apart were the 12" QSCs?

Absolutely. I do know that the wife of my buddy did say at the beginning of the night, that the DJ would be mostly featuring club music. And they even managed 2 reggae songs....
 
He had a "style" he played a certain kind of music.... he didn't need to carry Motown. I am betting he didn't have any C&W either.

Don't judge DJs by the standards that you feel we should live by. He was working, I wasn't.
 
I have become friends with a Black DJ in my area. He is very good at what he does and mainly only DJ's white weddings. I asked him about this and simply stated the white people are the ones that can afford him. He is in the $1200 for 4 hours range. Back to the topic

It's all very different. I'm sure I could rock an Urban party without a doubt.

At most events I try not to play slow songs. Even at weddings when open dancing starts I try to keep it to 2 ot 4 max for the entire evening.

Most people don't like motown it's slow and boring.

Not sure what Motown you are referring to, but around here, Motown is typically a big hit at weddings. Nothing slow and boring about it.

I can't remember the last wedding I did that didn't have a few Motown songs.



If that's working for him, I'm all for it. But in my experience, it's better to have a type of music, even if you don't play it very often, so you have it when you need it. Now, it's very possible that he had some Motown, but didn't think it would work well with what he was trying to do there, and just told Papa that.

Because the vast majority of people were 50+ in age. And at other parties it does fill the floor, but usually with younger folks.

As far as Motown goes, people in Philly love it. It's very weird to see a DJ ( mobile DJ ) who doesn't have it.

Perhaps you are unaware of the Gamble & Huff ---- Philly / Motown connection?
