I just got information about placeing an ad in the Notre Dame Basketball Year book which is sold at every game and in various retail outlets. Cost of a 1/16th page ad (about the size of a business card) $595.00.

I had placed an ad in a local Wedding mag last year and managed to book one based on that ad.....

The good part is I wouldn't be billed until the begining of the year once the mags start to be printed and distributed and I can pay over time however I choose to....

Pretty much this would be my print ad budget for the year but, it does get my "card" in peoples hands I might not otherwise see....

Of course ads like this are more or less like fishing blindly but, what do you guys think?

Would folks really look at a Basketball Year book for a DJ? I dont think this is a good investment of your advertising dollar. What about mailing out some flyers to schools , social clubs etc?

Maybe, Maybe Not.... but consider this.... it is a magazine that would be available on a prestigious University campus.... not only would fans from out of town would be reading it... but so would faculty and students alike.... think about name recognition.... McDonald's advertises in every dang thing.... and not always something directly related to food.

Also... I'm not trying to market to just the Wedding segment... sure that's my bread and butter... but, I'm also trying to market to general private parties, corporate, and other special events.

This would get my name in the hands of folks with money to spend... affluent people with money to spend.

For a magazine ad, I don't see it as great bang for the buck. I actually have printed flyers posted on bulletin boards at the colleges free of charge, and get better exposure.

I would probably use the print budget for bridal and entertainment magazines..

That's good for narrow marketing. What I'm trying to do is broaden my market to extend to a larger and broader demographic.

Flyers are great in dorm rooms if your looking for frat parties. I'm not. What I'm attempting to do is appeal to things like Grad parties and corporate types and folks in general that go to these games will be in that demographic with money.

In my opinion, that's a tiny ad for the money and it will be swallowed up by all the ads placed around it. It's very difficult to have an effective ad in business card size. Also, consider the demographics and readership for potential ROI. Is the book's target audience the same as yours?

Another thought: If you have to think about placing an ad to the point where you post about it on a global forum filled with folks who are unfamiliar with the publication, then it's probably not worth your money to place the ad. ;)

Rob, those corporate types aren't going to be picking up basketball yearbooks. They're going to be wined & dined by the University's development office trying to get money out of them.

yeah, but McDonalds is trying to appeal to EVERYONE
you are only targeting a very small, specific group of people.
you need to spend $600 on something that is going to be seen by couples that are getting married.
Even if this mag is seen by THOUSANDS...
how many of the them fit into your small little wedding demographic?

would you advertise a hip-hop concert....in a magazine for country line dancing attire?

But.... I'm not marketing to the wedding group..... I am trying to broaden my reach into other markets.

If the wedding mag is only providing one or two leads for whatever money its likely a basketball program even for the Indiana Pacers isnt going to return much. Would you put an ad in the local newspaper even in the stock market section.? Do you really think many people even notice the ads? Especially an ad for a DJ? The demographic you are trying to reach likely reads the stock market page but likely wont be shopping for a DJ and the ad posted on that page right?

I do....

When I'm in a resturant where they have ads on their placemats I can't help but read them.... as a mater of fact just typeing this I can visually remember some of those ads....

Get my point?

I certainly agree with broader marketing, I don't see a college mag as representing it.

If you want to do corporates, a business magazine might be a better bet. The Grad parties can be booked via the flyer- That's how I get them.

Here's the thing I put an ad in a local Wedding Rag and it netted one lead. This magazine was basically a passive ad it wasn't actively sold or passed out it was put in racks with the hopes someone would pick it up.

These are sold in mass at pep rallies, games and collegiate retail shops specifically to middle and upper class buyers.

Whether it gets in the hands of a person who is ready to buy now or a person who may retain the memory of seeing my ad then.... only later to see it again and have that instant recognition and familiarity of the brand is equally important as the instant sale and possibly the same as.

Rob, it sounds like you've already made up your mind.

If you've got the money in hand to pour down a rat-hole, go ahead and place the ad. I couldn't imagine shooting the whole wad on 1 ad, no matter what the publication.
