Soundgarden... excuse my ignorance regarding their "greatest hits"

They have just released essentially a "greatest hits" 2 CD / 1 DVD collection with 5 new songs.

I have no idea why I don't know more about this band, as I love Chris Cornell's voice on Black Hole Sun. ( That is his name, right? )..... and I generally loved the music from that era.... love STP, Nirvana, Pearl Jam.... and a bunch more... but somehow, other than Black Hole Sun, I can't think of a single song that I can ever remember hearing ANYWHERE.

That said, I like his voice so much that I am contemplating the the CD / DVD from the link above, mostly based on BHS.

So, what songs by Soundgarden are really "hits"?
 
Spoonman and Outshined to name two of my other favorites. Actually Spoonman is my favorite even over Black Hole Sun.
 
for the mainstream, it is basically just Spoonman and Black Hole Sun.
 
Papa, I could see your point if this released was called "Greatest Hits". It's not. It's basically a mini version of a box set. It throws the fans a bone and generates some revenue for the band.

"Soundgarden will release their first collection of music since 1996 in the form of Telephantasm on September 28th in the US and September 27th internationally. This multi-label, career-spanning retrospective album includes beloved band hits, deep back catalogue cuts and a never-before-heard unreleased track entitled "Black Rain," taken from the Badmotorfinger recording sessions."

Spoonman and Black Hole Sun represent when Soundgarden went "mainstream" If you really want to hear the "real" soundgarden listen to Jesus Christ Pose and Rusty Cage or for that matter any song off of their cd badmotorfinger. This CD is loud in your face and black and white. You either absolutely love it or it's the worst "noise" you've ever heard.

Yeah, but I'm not worried about them calling it a greatest hits CD or not. I just wanted to know your opinions on whether this compilation has a lot of good music or not.

I guess that would depend on whether or not you're a Soundgarden fan wouldn't it? Couldn't you pose the same question about any release like this?

Your title, "....excuse my ignorance regarding their "greatest hits"", eludes to the question that they even had enough to warrant the CD set.

Like I said, I am a huge fan of the guy's voice... at least as he uses it on BHS.
 
Ditto to the "Badmotorfinger" CD!

Absolutely love that CD, and the songs "Rusty Cage", "Outshined", etc...Heck, if you want to hear more noise from them, go older with another one of their CD's "FOPP" (I think?). I own it, but rarely listen...

Then again, at the time I was also jamming out to "Mother Love Bone", "Temple of the Dog", "Alice In Chains", OLD "Pearl Jam" (TEN), and "Stone Temple Pilots"

As for the CD you are talking about...not a bad CD to own, especially if you are a fan of his singing!
 
I learned from my daughter that a Chris Cornell fan...
is a fan of ANYTHING that man touches..
(and he's done A LOT!)
so if you like Chris, you like ANY song from Soundgarden!

I think he's contemplating a SG reunion...
and this is his way of testing the waters, so to speak
 
his solo disc (released early this year or late last year I believe) is also very good, but completely different from anything else he has done.
 
I don't think it's ignorance. You have to realize there are many different radio formats. So just because a song isn't a hit on CHR/Top40 does not mean it's not a hit. As a former PD of an Active Rock Station I can tell you this is a huge band. In fact currently they have the 18th most played Active Rock song in the country with Black Rain. Black Hole Sun, Fell On Black Days, Spoonman, Outshined, just to name a few were huge Active Rock hits....
 
like others here, I prefer Badmotorfinger over the newer disc, and was/is a huge fan of Audioslave. I would have to say that Chris Cornell has one of the best voices in modern rock, and will continue to make music, either as a solo artist (his solo music is good too) or with a band of some sort. I was more bummed about him leaving Audioslave, than Soundgarden.

Temple of the Dog is a great cd too....
 
I like the raw sound of Temple of The Dog and Mother Lovebone. As mentioned above the Bad Motorfinger album was their best. I didnt like the fact that MTVused the grunge era to wipe out other Rock from its programming as a segue into Yo MTV Raps.
 
I'm convinced that Cornell is either a marketing genius
for getting out of every band just when things get good

or completely mental
and cannot make a real commitment to anything for any reasonable amount of time.
 
What a great band!

I myself own 3 of their discs.
Louder Than Love, Badmotofinger, and Superunknown.
However they are one of the most boring live shows I ever caught, saw them at the Omni in Atlanta back in I guess maybe 1997?
