What is the best Rock Guitar Solo that you have ever heard? Mine is from Led Zepplin's "Stairway To Heaven"

Second best would be Peter Frampton's "Show Me The Way"

Although I know it is not considered technically great, I love Slash's solo in November Rain.

even tho I am a Zep fan....
and I think Page is brilliant...
I like his playing on the chorus or the verse of a song
more than I like his solo's!
so...
Clapton in the 70's
Eddie Van Halen in the 80's
Stevie Ray in the 90's

and absolutely NO ONE in the 2000's

in the 2000s, you have to mention Zakk Wylde, or maybe even guys like Joe Bonamassa or Kenny Wayne Shepherd...

Zakk has some bitchin solos with Ozzy, Pride and Glory, as well as obviously Black Label Society...

Too many to mention, and I guess the difficulty of giving an answer is because I'm a guitar player too, so I love many different solos for many different reasons.

Some standouts for me on the rock front would be (not in any order, just off the cuff):

1) Eruption, Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do), many more - Van Halen
2) Axis Bold as Love (outro solo), Nightbird Flying, anything Hendrix
3) Cult of Personality - Living Colour
4) Erotic Nightmares, For the Love of God - Anything from Passion and Warfare by Steve Vai
5) Layla - Clapton & Allman
6) Love Hurts - Nazareth

I'm also very partial to Ritchie Blackmore, Jimmy Page, and Tony Iommi too.

I have to also go with Eruption but Zakk Wylde BLS, Steve Vai, Yngwie, Bullet For My Valentine and Trivium have all shared some great Guitar.Who could forget Dimebag.

Yeah, we could fill the thread with all kinds of names of good, or even great guitar players, but the OP was regarding best solo you ever heard, and as good as many listed are, they just don't enter that pantheon. But then again, I guess if we were compiling a Top 1000 list, we could make a pretty convincing case for anyone :p

Any of them listed on my part have had great solos and it would be tough to pinpoint one as better than the other. Eruption gets my top vote of alltime but the others had many. Heck Ted Nugent at McNichols Arena played a 10 minute solo that was unreal. Roy Clark could mystify ya with his talents. Some would even give Al DiMeola the nod.
