What genre would you place him in?

I was ripping 3 CDs of his tonight, and they came up as 3 different genres, using whatever service iTunes uses for tagging. I know that this info is user supplied.

It depends on if it is his country stuff or his blues stuff or his R&B stuff or his pop stuff!

Or you can just stuff it all under Ray Charles!:tribiggrin:
 
Very often, I don't put every song from an artist on one genre. And my genres are a little different than others.

I only put a genre in a song i'm likely to use...and how I'm most likely going to use that song. My genres are things like dinner/cocktail...late dinner/upbeat. I do have basic ones as well, like motown, disco etc, modern dance, older dance.

Ray Charles...I'd put "America the beautiful" under "patriotic"

Georgia on my mind and under dinner/cocktail

Mess around and what I'd say go under "late dinner/upbeat"

Some songs go in multiple genres
 
If I were to organize his songs electronically, I would set the categories depending upon the song and not the artist. "I've Got A Woman" would go under Blues, but "Hit The Road Jack" would be Motown.

Another example is Stevie Wonder, who has songs that would be classified as R&B, Motown, or Funk. "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" would be R&B; "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" would be Motown; and "Sir Duke" would be Funk.

Regarding classifications based upon when a song would be used, that is to your discretion. I would use a separate category for such classifications as "dinner music," "slow songs," and "dance openers."

What you are doing is better classified as making Playlist Selections. Those are not Genres.
I have never seen a Dinner/Cocktail Genre anywhere. Just saying! But to each his own.
If a Client ask you to pull up all the "Blues" you have, what would you put in the "Search" field?
 
I have all of my Ray Charles currently listed as Blues which seems to fit most of his songs. However, this fell under my original scheme of labeling all songs by an artists as the same genre. About 6 months ago I changed to selecting an overall genre for each artist, but then classify each song if they fall far outside of the overall genre if I notice it.

To me, playlists are something I might see myself playing at one time. I don't play playlists. But I do see your point. If a client asks me to see what blues I have, I might give them some artists, but I don't do a search for blues on my computer.

You don't have to "play" playlists. You can use them to organize music. You would do the typical genres for your songs, but then organize them further into Cocktail playlists (Cocktail Jazzy, Cocktail Vegas, etc) or Dinner playlists (Dinner Standards, Dinner NAC, etc) or Dance playlists (Adult Floorfillers, Current Hits, Club Dance, etc). That way you can still sort your music by genre or look at a playlist for something for a particular situation.

Playlists does not necessarily mean Lists you have to actually play "Live". Maybe I can clarify better by stating them as Hit Lists. For example, In my "Playlists" I may have all the Very Best Country Songs labeled as Best Of Country. Anything in that list is a sure hit. then I do the same with Rock, R&B, Hip Hop etc. I can go even furtherand make a "Playlist" called "Master" where I lump all those Very Best" categories into one. That to me will still be where I go to draw out music.

I can also create a "Live" for an upcoming event which will include the cocktail music to start. Also remember, you can re-create a past "live" playlist by going to "History" and saving it by that Event's Name.
 
Actually he has got quite few different types of songs that fit under lots of different categories. "Shake a Tailfeather" [from Blues Brothers] is soul whereas "7 Spanish Angels" duet with Willie Nelson is country. But as Scott above said you could put them loosely under Blues as they all have a blues element about them.

I go by the song, not the artist
for reasons mentioned above.

whether you call it a folder, a file, a playlist, or whatever....
you'll still look for it the same way.

if you're looking for a good COUNTRY song, and the artist isn't important
you'll look in the COUNTRY folder
if you wanna play a Ray Charles song, you search by artist.
