EV TX vs. ZX5

During this past weekends Southern IN Meet-n-Greet, Kirby brought along his pair of ZX5's. I've been wanting to hear them due to all the hype they've been getting and certainly with the opportunity to compare them side-by-side with my TX12's and TX15's, it was a tremendous opportunity.

We compared them with a variety of setup's -- ie, with EQ, without, etc...

I thought the ZX5 sounded much cleaner 'out of the box' without any processing than my TX15's. The mid range frequencies were much cleaner and tight in my opinion.

Compared to the TX12, I thought they sounded about equal in the highs and mids, with the ZX5 obviously carrying more punch in the low end.

Now, setting the TX15 & ZX5 up with processing...the two sounded almost like twins. Both with clean highs and mids, with as much punch as you'd need without a sub setup.

I was hoping that the testing would confirm my desire to own a pair of powered ZX5's and it did. Who knows what Santa may bring to the Allen house.

Again, this was my personal opinion and observation. Your ears may vary. :triwink:

I think most of the hype has been on the ZXA5s (the powered version)
I own both the ZXA1 & the ZXA5.

Both ROCK!

An interesting comparison, Thanks for sharing! I'll have to try that out myself, I ordered 4 ZXA5's from NLFX and they should be arriving in the next couple days, i can't wait to play with them! I'll definitely do a side by side comparison with some of my Tour X speakers as well, sounds fun

The non powered ZX5's in my opinion are the best speaker money can buy in this price range. The reason why I love the ZX5 passives is the freedom of using the amp of my choice to push them.
KirBall's feedback on these speakers were what sold me on them.. For a little over 700.00 a piece you will not find a better box.

As far as I can tell the passive Zx5 and the TourX 15" are roughly the same price, give or take $50 or so. If I was reading this thread correctly the conclusion is that the Zx5's sound a bit better in the mid range and have a bit more bottom end?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Randy! You are right - although the ZX-5 and TX-1152 have similar "voicing", the difference is really in the versatility. The ZX-5 has multiple flypoints, optional bracket or trussmount hardware, monitor angles and is bi-ampable.
