Which One Would You Buy?

I have a choice of this http://www.dbxpro.com/266XL/index.php or this http://www.dbxpro.com/166XL/index.php which one would you buy? Forget about the price range, I can buy either one but all I want to do is limit the incoming signals from other DJs outputs that are coming into my board.

I already have a quad C/L Behr MDX 4400 for four mikes and can use a coupled pair to achieve this but I don't want to have to wire and rewire. I'll leave that one wired for my Mikes.

Would you care to explain why you made that choice? The reason for my post is that both equipment specs/features are almost identical except one is a little over $100.00 more in price.
 
Oh Oh Oh, I know, I know!

Because all you really want to use it for is as a limiter! and the 166 has the peak stop feature!

I've got the 166XL - look on craigslist in your area - I see them all the time in the 125-150 range.
 
The main reason is it has a limiter in addition to a compressor and gate. It would be worth the extra $110.00 to me. Same as my Rane DC24. I paid $400.00 for the Rane back in the 90s.

How about the Drawmer DSL424? :tribiggrin:

Testing with the limiter didn't impress me a whole lot... it's not necessarily a "clean" attenuation. Sounded pretty jagged when purposely overloading a mic into it.

I guess you would need to understand the purpose and use of limiting for it to work for you!
 
You are just full of insults aren't you. I didn't buy it for the limiter, I bought it for the compressor. And I am happy with it.

Not being insulting at all, just pointing out that if you are going to use a feature on a piece of gear you should really know what it's pupose is and how to use it!
 
Well correct me if I'm wrong, but the limiting feature mostly there to protect against a mic being dropped, extreme loudness, etc. So in that case it doesn't matter if it's clear or not, as it's just a protective measure. The reason I mentioned it is because if you read the literature with it, it claims that it doesn't just cut the signal, that it "actively lowers and rounds the peak to sound more natural" or something to that effect -- so I expected it to be a bit better than what I perceived to be more or less just a high shelf with a hard cut.

Do I have things wrong? If so, please correct me. I'm not the know-it-all that it appears you are under the impression that I think I am.
 
Remember. I am NOT using it for Mikes. I am using it to limit a stereo signal sent from a Rane TTM 57SL by another DJ to my Board. He almost always maxes out everything..gain, highs, lows and mids. By the time I get the signal it is very "Hot" and distorted. He does not listen to my advise to keep everything flat and leave it up to me for EQ adjustments and gain control. Add to the fact that some of his mp3s are probably internet downloaded from questionable sites so they are low in quality and sound crappy.

Oh I am sorry I thought it was you who knew everything about someone else's gear! And what you would never use at a gig!

Like I said, if you know what you are doing with a compressor/limiter/gate, you can onlyenhance the sound, if you don't know you can destroy it!

You are the expert you tell me!

I intend to monitor the guy more closely but just in case, I want my speakers protected especially when I bring the three way system back in in the mix. I don't want all them expensive tweeter and midrange horns frying.
