Hey guys,

I try to take pictures at events but they never turn out. They're usually too dark and the lighting effects don't come out at all. What are the best settings to use for digital cameras when the room is dark for dancing and there are lighting effects going?

You can use your camera's Night setting No Flash to capture your lighting.... just mount your camera on a stand. It's near impossible unless you can hold your camera completely still to capture photos on this setting without them being blured.

BTW I have the e-book in which Dennise mentions and I think it is pretty handy.

But it's hard to get the dancers to 'freeze' for a second to keep the rest of the shot from being blurry.

Higher ASA settings and a larger aperture are the way to go. I used to be the head of my high school photography club, not sure though if that's something I should tell everyone... For simple point and shoots, try the night time mode but set the flash to on, it works good for me. That should give you enough light to help keep the dancers in focus and most built in flashes don't have much power past 10 feet so your lights should still come out. I normally set a 2 second delay and rest it on the edge of my coffin for stability. I get some good shots that way, even if the camera is a cheap piece of ****. ;)
