BTW a RealDJ doesn't sit.... LOL

He's not sitting down he's semi-laying down enjoying the sun... :sqwink::sqwink::sqwink:

Hey Chuck, what happened to the red decoration under your user name???

All that sand and dirt!

I am glad that I am not the only one that noticed. I would have asked/requested the Client to at least supply me a riser on which I could setup my gear.

You got any photos after you put the speakers on the stands you have setup...? :sqlaugh:

Screw you, you long haired hippy! :sqlaugh:

Not sure what you mean, I'm slow

Did you move the car before the guests arrived?

Did you notice the other picture of the set up?

Welcome to my world, not so cool is it!

That's why you work where you do and I work where I do

Chuck,
Not an affront to you. Texas has lots of dry ground and dust blowing. I do not have your system but if I did, I would request a riser/stage or something to get my equipment off the ground.
Fortunately my speakers are mounted on tripods. My bass speakers have NEVER been placed on the ground at an outdoor event!

If I tried to request a riser I would be on the list of "hard to work with dj's" some that I can not afford to do. On Maui we have about 150,000 on the whole island,,, it doesn't take long to get a rep you don't want to work with...

Would I rather have a riser? Sure,,,, but it is better to be working than sitting home.....

:sqeek:Wow! :sqerr:Just asking for something will make you "hard to work with"....interesting!

Lucky for you that you were not delivering the cake!

FWIW, I do what I have to for the gig and charge accordingly....if speakers need to be on grass, sand and dirt, snow, or hung from a tree then I'm good with it all. I do have a couple of those rubber "shoe/boot mats" that I'll use though if I have to put them on the ground. They have a lip about 1/2" high around the whole thing and are made from some tough rubbery/plastic stuff.

But heck, they make speakers every day and the more you buy, the better it is for the economy!! :sqlaugh:

Mine have. I do one of 2 things. I simply either wipe them off after the event, or I put a mat down before I put them on the ground.

We don't do a ton of outdoor events, but when we do, a rag or a mat works fine.

I, too, believe that requesting a riser or a stage simply to keep your equipment off the ground would be a quick way for the client or venue to be looking somewhere else.

I guess it really come down to not knowing one's Client that would intimidate one not to ask. If I knew I was "afraid" to ask, then if there was going to be an expense on my part to get my speakers off the ground, I'll add that to my fee and not itemize it. Its not the dust you see which can be wiped off that is the problem, it the very fine particles that can do damage to components if they get in.
Chuck's correct, stay where y'all are and I'll stay where I am.:sqlaugh: I have no more comments but I sure learned something by this post!

PS: Ask Randy to build you some Pedestals! He did a wonderful job on his!

Just fooling around about the car, Chuck. I saw the pic.

I actually was at a wedding sit where a friend DJ was working a wedding on the other site there. He left his ugly blue astrovan right behind him the whole time. Thought it was beyond lame.

I agree, we'll stay where we are at. Feel free to call it being "afraid". I don't look at it that way. I look at it as being easy to work with. I have found that to be a good business move. I like making it easy for people to do business with us. I get a lot of venues recommending us. Part of the reason is that they like working with us.

Yes, dust particles can get inside the equipment. The equipment can also be cleaned and refurbished.

I think bringing risers yourself and including it in the fee is a great idea. To me, that's different than requesting risers be provided for you

Scott,
I will make a concession here up to a point. Again, if it was me, by the time the Agreement is signed and money is exchanged I would know if it is the client that would be providing me with some sort of platform/riser/stage or if I had to provide it myself. My price will reflect one or the other.

In asking for the platform, riser or whatever, it would be more of an inquiry than a demand or actual request. My question would be worded something as follows "Is there going to be a riser/platform etc on which the DJ would be setup or would the DJ have to provide their own?"

Now tell me what part of that question is offensive? Why should they think you are hard to work with and stop talking to you and go look elsewhere? Maybe the Bride or Venue did not think of that until it was mentioned. If they did and really wanted the DJ to provide one then you will then know for sure. Bottom line is the question would be answered one way or another and then you move on from there.

Lastly, if I lived and DJd in a place where there was a likelihood of doing many events like this, I would build/buy my own setup in case it was needed. Even though I may own one, I would still ask whenever negotiating for a Gig like that.

I bet ten to one that if they were hiring a band that a stage or something would be provided for the band. Does that mean the DJ is insignificant and a band is not? It too is a part of making THEIR event look more polished. Putting speakers on the ground is not a good look, one may just as well have wires all over the place. The look is the same, unpolished!

I would not offer a criticism without a positive suggestion. If it was me and I knew I would be afraid to ask a question as the issue above, I would either get my own riser/platform etc or get a nice large piece of Green Outdoor Carpet large enough on which you can setup your gear. That would look so much better than the bare ground, and help to protect your equipment.

Guys...guys...get back on topic here.

Chuck, 'round these parts, you are the definition of "cool". 'Nuff said...
