No offense to the KJ/Hosts, lighting gurus, video gurus, or game show folks but here's a draft of my latest article to go up on the site:

Keep It Simply Superb (KISS)

Many people define the K. I. S. S. principle as “Keep It Simple, Stupid”; however, at Good Knight Entertainment we find that to be insulting; instead, we use Keep It Simply Superb.

By “Simply” we mean simplicity. Many mobile entertainment companies have invested in things, like lighting, video, karaoke, game shows, and such that drive their overhead up which causes their prices to go up as well. Honestly, Good Knight Entertainment had gone down that road but has dropped these investments and here’s why:

  • Video: Mainly this is for music videos and they have their place in school events and clubs. If you honestly think about it when you attend a wedding or other type of party you come to socialize with friends and family and that includes dancing with them. If there are music videos at these events you listen to them more than watch them so what is the point of the video part? We have eliminated that overhead and gone back to the basics; good music and a good time.
  • Karaoke: Karaoke is fun, there is no doubt about that; however, many people equate it with caterwauling drunks and screaming kids. This is unfortunate but a fact of the matter. Good Knight Entertainment used to offer karaoke as an add on but nobody was taking it even at no charge because they didn’t want the possibility of a bunch of off key singers driving the rest of their guests away. As a result, Good Knight Entertainment has eliminated karaoke.
  • Game Shows: They come in various forms from the big set up with the podiums to simpler ones with just the hand lockout buttons. No matter which you have, they still require some sort of projection system to display the game board and scoring. Regardless of the type you have the investment is goes from big to huge and to recoup it you need to push it. Again, at one time Good Knight Entertainment was offering this as an add on and we received no takers. Game Shows do have their place in corporate functions but just don’t fly with weddings and other types of parties.
  • Lighting: We admit that this is something that could be very useful at a wedding when done correctly. A professional lighting expert can use lights to establish the right mood and ambiance and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Simply put, at Good Knight Entertainment our expertise is in DJ and Master/Mistress of Ceremonies work so we leave lighting to those that can do it professionally and correctly. We have contacts with companies that professionally provide lighting services and will put you in contact with them directly.

By eliminating the above from our services we have gotten back to what initially brought us to the mobile entertainment business; good music and a good time.

Eliminating these things has also allowed us to trim our overhead and that allows us to keep our prices reasonable.

The other word in our KISS principle is Superb. That describes our customer service and our performance for you. When you engage our services for your wedding or other type of party we will guarantee that you will get simply superb service all the way around.

I think you're heading in the right direction keeping it simple like you're doing. I offered karaoke as an add on and found it more trouble than it was worth. Unless it was a wedding where most of the guests were karaoke fans I found it didn"t add much if anything at all. I think a client that wants karaoke at their wedding should contact a KJ who does weddings instead.

Personally, I wouldn't mention why you don't offer the extras. I'd keep it simple and positive.

I think the approach isn't sound.

Why go to lengths giving "excuses" why you don't offer these add-ons. In essence you are slamming those that offer those add ons.

I could say the exact opposite on my site; any dj that doesn't offer lighting is "lazy, uninspired and charging a top rate for the basics...

Keep it Simple; you're not....

I use my game show and I don't have a display screen. It is called reading the question out loud.

Well, I can just list the things we're not doing; however, lights are an exception. I don't do lights because I suck at it. I know my limitations but I also have a list of folks that do lights, some are fellow DJs and others just do lights. Of course, the ones that just do lights are the ones that get recommended first. :sqwink:

Yup!!

I always wonder why some DJ's try to "educate" the customer about what they need based on what that particular DJ can provide.

Now that you've written it - don't upload it. Be satisfied that you got it off your chest and posted it here.

1. An article about everything you don't do is unnecessary and unwise. You will simply be adding to your site keywords for the very activities you are trying to avoid.

2. Your opinion about everything you don't sell - has no value in, and distracts from the promotion of; those things that you do sell.
